  • There was a guitar in there that sounded like straight up country music, right out of Nashville.

  • cool version. great guitar picking !

  • LIVE! Excellent! Thanks!

  • I love it

  • I love this song

  • ...funny thing is when I was a kid , back in the 50's, my youngest uncle used to put his chewing gum on the bedpost and rechew it the next morning, uhg!

  • Every time did this song live he changed the lyrics.

  • thank you,,,,thank you,,,thank you

  • memories of good old DR Demento

  • Even if the song weren't a joke, it would be better than the garbage on the radio these days.

  • His voice would match well with the alternative style if he was around today, he has a good range...

  • R.P McMurphy ^_^

  • Well, I haven't heard this version. There are a lot of different lyrics from the one I am familiar with, which is the one that came out on the 45 rpm record back in the early 60s, which I had a copy of. I guess we have a lot more questions now that we have to find the answers to.

  • Good job

  • Rock'n' goofy songs anyone?

  • That's the first time i've that version and I loved it

  • George Formby comes to mind (my mind)

  • George Formy comes to mind (my mind)

  • I so love it.... Thanks ;D

  • I never expected to find and like this video out of pure arbitrary prospect.

  • If lonnie donegan was a sandwich he would be a good one.

  • This live version is way better than all the rest. Thumbs up if you first heard this on the cassette tape series"Goofy Greats."

  • I remember when I used to listen to this music when I was younger, it was funny then and still is funny now. Thanks for uploading.

  • I lived near him in brenford dock he was a gentleman had a good word always when you met him in the mornings may you rest in peace and may your God look after you and always LONNIE .

  • What a cute song! Thanks for posting! :)

  • Hate to admit it, but I put my chewing gum on the bedpost overnight as a child. And, it didn't loose it's flavor. We had to make one piece of gum last all week.

  • Thank you SO much for this post! I first heard this song when I was a youngin'. Now, I'll share it with MY youngin's. ;-)

  • That... Was horrid...

  • Folks, you should watch and hear the version in the Muppet Show, Season 1, Episode 9, with as guest Charles Aznavour. It's just awesome. I can dig and find it if anyone wants me to post it.

  • This song was 50 years ago no.10 in the world charts #lonnie #donegan

  • This is GREAT! Haven't heard this in many a year. Thanks for posting it!

  • I was in the Army stationed in Germany when I first heard this song. It was a different version by Lonnie and was a big hit in Germany. Brings back great memories. I hear it in Sirius XM 50's on 5 from time to time, always turn it up loud, it puts me in such a good mood. Palmyra nj

  • This is my husband's favorite version of this song. We've been looking for it for a long time. Thanks!! :)

  • I love this song. :)

  • In England. the term "knocker" means giving someone a call, as in "I'll knock you up later," or I'll give you a call later.

  • A wonderful novelty recording, and a catchy Irish tune by Lonnie Donegan...Thank you for the posting, and especially, the lyrics along with it...

  • I remember this when I was 10----thought it was the greatest thing I had ever heard....

  • Why does it sound like Eric Idle from Monty Python making comments in the song.

  • This version was available in an edited form on K-Tel records back in the 1970's on albums like 'Kooky Kountry' and 'Kooky Toones'. They currently offer it as part of the mp3 digital download "Stars of The London Palladium" on Amazon and iTunes. Thanks for uploading - haven't heard this version for years!

  • I grew up listening to a different version. It's great to listen the original version, though. I like this one better.

  • Is it just me or is this song incredibly dirty?

  • i always wanted to know who sang this? lol love it :)

  • This is the best version I've ever heard. Absolutely love it!

  • "herrang de knocker"... translation, please?

  • @astrocitizen

I have no idea and couldn't work it out via Googling as this verse isn't in all versions of the song so had to put something there or just question marks. Any idea what he says?

  • @johnatkin69

I think he says "He rang the knocker". Which is essentially ringing the doorbell. ( google "rang the knocker" ) Basically, a convict was out on bail and he wanted to get back into jail to get his teeth. Because of this, they think he was "off his rocker".

  • @wkrick

Yep, you're right, it's obvious now you've said it. Oh well I don't think I can change it now and upload it again without losing all the comments etc.

  • @johnatkin69 you could add a comment/annotation thing on the vid to cover the bad lyrics with the correct ones; it's not perfect but about the best you can do...

  • @wkrick Harrang de knocker

  • @astrocitizen

Harrang!! sp harangue [or harang] original meaning Loud or Vehement address to an audience ,

when i was a lad it was used as a colloquialism with reference to someone who pestered [usually made an annoyance of themselves loudly and vigorously ]

so in the context of the song .. he banged the knocker very hard repeatedly

  • @astrocitizen:First,Thanks For Asking The Question. In The Context Of The Perticular Lyric,It Might Mean "He Rang The Knocker." Just My Thought.

  • @astrocitizen who rang the knocker

  • I'll stuff you from the outside. Gross. 1:42

  • my grandma told me to look this song up and its FUNNY!!!

  • Lovely song

  • I love the bad jokes..."Is a gold tooth a flash in the pan?" "If I crossed a Kangaroo with a turkey, could I stuff it from the outside?" "If Tutankhamun got sick, would I have to call his mummy?" LOLOL.

  • thanks for the blast from the past

  • Such a fun song.

  • Long live the memory of the King of Skiffle, who sadly died in 2002.

  • Vad i helvete har dom för sig på banken efteer tre

  • i absolutely love this song i have it on caseet and also on LP i have been listen to it for years and still love it .

  • Thank you, johnatkin69. This is great! I've been unable to find these lyrics so I can print them. AND I'd like to know where I can get a CD of this.

  • As anyone got a copy of Alively one of my fav Lonnies Very amusing

  • i've been looking all over for this version! awesome job! thanks for posting.

  • could anyone help me and tell me what "elastic rollers" are in this context?

  • @Fortherean Hi -- elastic rollers are now called 'curlers' and are what women used to put in their hair at night to keep it curly (basically the same as are used today in hairdressers) Once they had their 'curlers' in they would often put a hair net over them to keep everything in place while they slept. It was not the most glamorous of looks! definitely a passion killer! see you tube vids on 'Ena Sharples'

to see what he was alluding to! ;-)

  • @Fortherean Hair rollers.

  • @Fortherean Actually, that's "PLASTIC rollers" - hair rollers...

  • lol this is great. :3

  • Thanks for this, I didn't realise there were so many verses! :-0

  • This was quite an amusing song... :-) The only songs that were big hits that more or less captured this feeling were 'You Know What I Mean', the beggin of 'Johnnu Reggae" (wot's 'e loik, Mayvis?' "oh, he's a roit tasty geezah"), and 'My Ding-A-Ling""

  • How absolutely, wonderfully, flipping funny!!!

  • Yeah, you're quite right ClipHunter4. "Since" makes much more sense. Unfortunately the only way I know how to change the lyrics is to go back to the orginal video I made and then upload it again but then I'd lose all the comments when I remove this video. I don't know of any other way of doing it. I have had comments of lyrics being wrong on some of my other uploads but have the same problem.

  • The studio version was on an american version of a K-Tel 8 track tape titled 'Wacky Westerns' put out back in the late '60's.

  • I had another copy of this that went missing after a fire. The copy I had was the same lyrics as this one, but sounded more like the studio mix of the more familiar hit version. I've been looking for this! Thanks. :)
