...funny thing is when I was a kid , back in the 50's, my youngest uncle used to put his chewing gum on the bedpost and rechew it the next morning, uhg!
Well, I haven't heard this version. There are a lot of different lyrics from the one I am familiar with, which is the one that came out on the 45 rpm record back in the early 60s, which I had a copy of. I guess we have a lot more questions now that we have to find the answers to.
I lived near him in brenford dock he was a gentleman had a good word always when you met him in the mornings may you rest in peace and may your God look after you and always LONNIE .
I live near him in brenford dock he was a gentleman had a good word always when you met him in the mornings may you rest in peace and may your God look after you and always LONNIE .
Hate to admit it, but I put my chewing gum on the bedpost overnight as a child. And, it didn't loose it's flavor. We had to make one piece of gum last all week.
Folks, you should watch and hear the version in the Muppet Show, Season 1, Episode 9, with as guest Charles Aznavour. It's just awesome. I can dig and find it if anyone wants me to post it.
I was in the Army stationed in Germany when I first heard this song. It was a different version by Lonnie and was a big hit in Germany. Brings back great memories. I hear it in Sirius XM 50's on 5 from time to time, always turn it up loud, it puts me in such a good mood. Palmyra nj
This version was available in an edited form on K-Tel records back in the 1970's on albums like 'Kooky Kountry' and 'Kooky Toones'. They currently offer it as part of the mp3 digital download "Stars of The London Palladium" on Amazon and iTunes. Thanks for uploading - haven't heard this version for years!
I have no idea and couldn't work it out via Googling as this verse isn't in all versions of the song so had to put something there or just question marks. Any idea what he says?
I think he says "He rang the knocker". Which is essentially ringing the doorbell. ( google "rang the knocker" ) Basically, a convict was out on bail and he wanted to get back into jail to get his teeth. Because of this, they think he was "off his rocker".
Yep, you're right, it's obvious now you've said it. Oh well I don't think I can change it now and upload it again without losing all the comments etc.
@johnatkin69 you could add a comment/annotation thing on the vid to cover the bad lyrics with the correct ones; it's not perfect but about the best you can do...
Harrang!! sp harangue [or harang] original meaning Loud or Vehement address to an audience ,
when i was a lad it was used as a colloquialism with reference to someone who pestered [usually made an annoyance of themselves loudly and vigorously ]
so in the context of the song .. he banged the knocker very hard repeatedly
I love the bad jokes..."Is a gold tooth a flash in the pan?" "If I crossed a Kangaroo with a turkey, could I stuff it from the outside?" "If Tutankhamun got sick, would I have to call his mummy?" LOLOL.
@Fortherean Hi -- elastic rollers are now called 'curlers' and are what women used to put in their hair at night to keep it curly (basically the same as are used today in hairdressers) Once they had their 'curlers' in they would often put a hair net over them to keep everything in place while they slept. It was not the most glamorous of looks! definitely a passion killer! see you tube vids on 'Ena Sharples'
This was quite an amusing song... :-) The only songs that were big hits that more or less captured this feeling were 'You Know What I Mean', the beggin of 'Johnnu Reggae" (wot's 'e loik, Mayvis?' "oh, he's a roit tasty geezah"), and 'My Ding-A-Ling""
Yeah, you're quite right ClipHunter4. "Since" makes much more sense. Unfortunately the only way I know how to change the lyrics is to go back to the orginal video I made and then upload it again but then I'd lose all the comments when I remove this video. I don't know of any other way of doing it. I have had comments of lyrics being wrong on some of my other uploads but have the same problem.
I had another copy of this that went missing after a fire. The copy I had was the same lyrics as this one, but sounded more like the studio mix of the more familiar hit version. I've been looking for this! Thanks. :)
There was a guitar in there that sounded like straight up country music, right out of Nashville.

In England. the term "knocker" means giving someone a call, as in "I'll knock you up later," or I'll give you a call later.
