BORs were technology demonstrators.

MiG-105's generally were US aircraft carrier killers working in pairs. Leading was for recon and guidance. The second one for honing and carring nuke. Project tested in iron with inertial and conventional warheads (direct hit) and conservated in favor for "Star Wars" and other things.

BOR's 1 ... 4 developed to SS Buran gradually. NASA Lifting Bodies program alike.
