  • Why is it that in post apocalyptic movies and books, only the friggin hillbillies survive? Where are all the normal people?

  • @Irish1McClellan I guess because they already don't have a lot so things aren't that much different. You have a good question though you would think they would die out after their welfare checks stop coming .

  • @Irish1McClellan because the hillbillies know how to survive cause they are constantly camping hunting and learning tricks on how to survive. Will normal people usually are worried with there careers and family.

  • Why is it movies when something happens they drop whatever they have in their hands like the beans in 10:56. In real life people sit things down because they don't want too clean it up. Some poor person will have too clean those beans up damn you Charlize Theron.

  • A nuclear bomb does not destroy plant life or darken the sea, as one can see in Chernobyl, plant life has thrived since the disaster there, same with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But the opening scene with the flashing lights outside of the window implies a nuclear attack, because one would not be able to see Yellowstone erupting from so many miles away, and a meteor attack would kill everybody.

So, the end of the world scenario of this movie doesn't work, but the drama is DEAD ON!

  • @XmXFLUXmX2 Doctor insano would use science to remind you that only 12 nuclear weapons could destroy all life on earth. And you are magnificently ill informed. The fuck you think happens when entire cities, forests, and EVERYTHING burns? It puts ash and crap into the sky which blots out the sun. Learn some SCIENCE!

  • @Anarchist86ed I'm sorry, I meant to say "An atomic detonation does not stop vegetation from growing". So yes, the initial plant life would be incinerated, but it would just grow back later.

  • I dont think that disaster is the important bit, its the bond between man and son. I loved the book, the old man in the book comes across as God, walking his destroyed creation. Also the book right at the end gives us a happy ending,m mentions new life returning. I dont think that the Earth is hit by a big rock or WW3 consuming the planet, I think that the planet shuts down on purpose ridding us of her back.

  • she wasted the beans!!!! she could've put them down.

  • Or possible meteor hit, or possbile yellowstone blowing up. I think its very possbile. Now the oxygen part being there is hard to fathom since theres no vegetation. Is a tough call to make.

But remember the story is about survival and the love the man had for the boy.

  • This movie is actually impossible. The man and the boy would not survive long. No one would have survived 10 years. All the vegetation is dead, the sea life is dead, there is no way to produce oxygen. All life would have been extinct. Also, since this disaster is likely a nuclear winter, they would have died from radiation poisoning. But any way you look at it, this is actually to upbeat. They would have died long before this story.

  • @Anarchist86ed We only receive information from the viewpoint of the father, who clearly states that the world is -slowly dying- Later on in the show it's shown that not all animals are dead even though he clearly states this as a fact in the beginning (because this is all he knows at the time). Since the father is ignorant of any in depth details relating to the disaster/world around him you are as well. So calling it impossible seems rather ridiculous.

  • @TYTGC uh-huh. Looks pretty dead to me. Like I said, to upbeat. Finding the food in the shelter was also impossible. It would all have spoiled by then. No food item I have is supposed to last past 2013.

  • @Anarchist86ed I can spot satisfyingly decent looking vegetation throughout the movie that would imply a harsh and short-term, yet survivable, ecosystem. (and) although the shelter scene contained ridiculous amounts of product placement, I'm sure the food -was- spoiled, you don't see enough of the food to make an educated assumption on the matter. Even if it was, they're starving, so they would have eaten it anyways. and I'm 99% sure shelters like that exist so. not impossible.

  • @TYTGC And I spot sunlight, what's your point?

    Product placement...

Last COKE on Earth. Which also would have gone flat. Coke expires to.

  • @Anarchist86ed and there's also fire, which would mean oxygen, so what I'm saying is that what you've been saying so far doesn't make sense because we don't have enough information about the cataclysmic event.

  • @Anarchist86ed I can understand if you dislike the reliance on "chance" throughout the movie but that hardly makes it upbeat.

  • To use later when the plumbing stopped working.

  • After both reading the book and watching the movie, I still don't understand why he ran the bathwater.

  • @efrainthegreat hes stoking water before the pipes run dry

  • stupid teacher making me read a book that confused me this was not confusing

  • Wow, whoever decides whether to get this taken down from YouTube or not -- thanks for refraining!

  • @cjwright79 yeah I agree...some sorry ass people think its a life calling to click Dislike.

  • its going to start in europe, greece will default then we default then ireland then spain and then italy and if italy defaults the uk will default because italy owes uk billions... if the central bank does quantitive easing then money wont be worth anything not only the debt wont be paid but society will be living in deflationary inflacionary depression age for decades, world will follow the same path after europe falls cause europe is 18 trillion economy, about 30% worlds economy

  • @ukusapillage There are some scriptures that go right along with what you are saying. Proverbs 18:11; Ezekiel 7:19 and Zephaniah 1:18. Have you noticed how technology brings the world closer together and yet people are worse off than ever? It is because mankind has been manipulated since the beginning. Ephesians 6:12

  • actually we are already living in a dreamthe end is already here, it will take just one country to default its debt so that another and another will not have capital to pay its next nation for its debt, cause all banks and gov are in debt to eachother, when greece defaults it will be a wave and the nuclear problem in japan is far from over the giving radiation everyday to the water and air, its matter of time before japanese will be seriously sick and many with birth defects, im sure

  • least i found the movie on you tube and not one of those damn "check our neighbor sites" a trick for anyone dont search for the first part search for the 2nd and up so it couyld be easier

  • thumb up if you're watching this movie because of The Last Of Us

    game from ND

  • That farm looked like it had a corn harvest within the past year.

  • PIck any 2 year period in the Earth's history and you'll see some "major" catastrophe. Don't attribute it to a silly 1800 year old book that was written by a group of men who knew less about the world and it's origins than your average 3rd grader today (unless they're homeschooled by religious nuts).

  • I'm soooo scared

  • Charlize Theron <3

  • Make sure before you watch this you're in a really really really good mood!

  • There certainly are ALOT of comments about this film. Please everyone, start studying the solar system and try to understand what earth is in for.

Something is on it's way, it happens about every 3600 yrs. See what is happening to the distant planets, (uranus for example) Perturbations of these planets suggest another planet entering solar system.

  • Can anyone tell me why he started filling up the bathtub with water? Not sure I understand that one. Was it just to give them spare water cuz he was anticipating not having running water much longer? Other than that, I can't think of why he would do that. Thanks

  • @Sennanchie Yes, if you read the book, he fills it up because he doesn't think they'll have running water for long.

  • @OL7OR That's just what I thought. Thanks buddy. :-) Great movie huh? Very depressing, but great. Btw... I never even knew the book existed until after I saw the movie first, but I will definitely read it when I get a chance.

  • Aragorn!

  • That guy with the full face mask riding on the back of the truck is one of the best actors I have ever seen. Just the way he moved his hand to his face was unreal. Hollywood needs more talent like that. Hopefully he got paid twice as much as Viggo from his amazing skills! I wish I knew who he was so I could google him and send him fan email.

  • This movie had me creeped out for days after I first saw it.

  • This makes me not want to have a baby.

  • @withthewaste Matthew 24:19 Woe to those that are with child and nurse babes in those days!

I never gave the bible a secon thought until I started seeing with my own eyes all that is written in that book, unfold before my own eyes. The next two years will see some major catastrophe.

  • @romnsch13 Matthew verse 34-12 And computers and android phones, and compact discs shall be born...really, everything is really really in the Bible. Like stoning, rape, sexism, all wonderful things. The world needs to grow up. Stop believing fairy tales, and embrace to wonder of the unknown.

  • @raveklaw The book of Mathew has just has 28 chapters.

  • Just wondering: If the plants are gone, and I'm assuming it's been a few years since the unnamed disaster, how was there enough oxygen for anyone to survive that long?

  • i am scared

  • yeah u r right hobominded

  • D:

  • what happened at 11:09 someone please reply

  • @SuperNerfsquad its called child birth, i am a dude but im assumeing its painful

  • @canehdian15 oh so that's what it is. yeah it must be painful

  • @SuperNerfsquad What happened is her "water broke". That happens right before a woman is about to go into labor and deliver her baby. All the fluids in her womb come gushing out (looks like shee's peeing) and the baby soon follows.

  • In love with the book and movie. Moving.

  • Oh you are a legend, my friend! Thanks for uploading. :D

  • Viggo Mortensen is an amazing actor

  • Good to know shopping carts survive. I guess I know what to stock up on.

  • @LoveBringsTruth Good one!

  • Another theory could be that the earth's spin has stopped. Causing eternal winter on one site, and eternal summer on the other.(this would explain the cold growing by the day). Other effects would be that the electro-magnetic field would fuck up, causing the major lack of power. Last but not least would the suns UV rays make some serious disturbance by the natural mutation of plants, this would cause the plants to die, wich would affect insects, then animal and then us, humans

  • Couldn't this be the result of a nuclear war? You have to admit, it could be possible. If just one missile is launched it wouldn't take long before the sky would be filed with nuclear weapons. Some sick shit to think about.

  • @FEAR0226 Our multi-megaton nukes are massive destroyers, but it would take many, say upwards of 100 of them to kill the planet like the movie describes. I suggest it is a planet x type event here that they are portraying.

  • @romnsch13 yeah, i think you right, but when you think about, that the us alone has over a thousand nukes, and that russia is re-arming their missiles, it can't be a completely wrong theory. i once saw a map of the cold war, on how the russians would drop nukes over the east-coast of little, meaningless denmark. the area messured 100 km x 100 km and they planned on dropping 39 nukes. imagine if this happend in larger scale in the states. so, it could be... scary shit...

  • @FEAR0226 I used to live in sacto. ca. Back then there were three usaf bases. I was always fearing nuke war. Lots of studying on the topic. I am certain that the u.s. will have a nuke detonation from radicals. But lately my concern lies more on the prospect of a planet entering our solar system and disrupting earth. Check out stan deyo and his theories. Earthquakes are up over 100%, Storms are triple the intensity, and the economy was gutted by those that KNOW, of our near future.

  • 1:30

to anyone who read the book, what happened to the wife? there was alota noises that sounded like she was atttacked

  • @BadVoodo0 if I remember right, his wife is actually barely mentioned at all in the book, but I seem to remember that she committed suicide. She has a much larger part in the movie than she had in the book. If you like the movie even a little bit, you should read the book. I know people say this all the time, but it really is way better.

  • @SevenSane thanks i just got the but like a week ago but never got around to reading it

im going to start doing that >.<

  • @BadVoodo0 It can be a tough read because it honestly is seriously depressing, but push on through, it's totally worth it.

  • @SevenSane I finished the book in one day of getting it. Was up till 2 Am had to wake at 5 for 11th grade haha

What really got me was the burnt baby corpse. I shaked.

  • @BadVoodo0 in the book she wandered off and killed herself with obsidian or so the father thinks, the book is unclear exactly what happened on a lot of things, that is one of them. well she walked off to kill herself because she was afraid of cannibals and crap and since the book doesnt say one of them might have gotten to her first... IDK she basicly just wandered off at night and wasnt seen again like in da movie

  • @hobominded shit that sucks... he doesnt even know what happened to his own wife

but again it sounds like she just lost it too

  • dankjewel thank you so much

  • @suraGQ2011 you totally freakin rock for posting this....thank you!

  • Why's Vigo Mortensen's film always have horses in them?

  • No animals survived? Not even nematodes deep in the soil or bacteria in the deep rocks?

The author posits such a ridiculous premise that it's impossible to suspend disbelief.

  • @PacRimJim From their perspective nothing survived. Something knocked out the radios and TV, so their world shrank to local information only. Of course trees survived somewhere because they are breathing.

The movie appears to be strongly based on the man and son's personal perspective of what's going on in their lives.

  • @WoodsWoman154 mmm... tree's might all be dead, with very few people on the world like this... a few thousand in the world... maybe 5000? take years and years to use up all the oxygen supply though it is possible

  • THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!

  • I'm so happy to find this movie here in youtube. I didn't want to sleep last night coz I'm not yet sleepy. But my hubby told me that we should. To make me fall asleep, he told me this story. I'm really touch by the story and amazed how my hubby tells this story. He read the book. :-) Thank you for uploading.

  • this movie look like Fallout 3

  • I've read the book (epic book is epic) but my English teacher said this movie is bad. Is it? I don't want to ruin my image of the book with a bad movie version of it.

  • I love this movie. I am alive video game is higly based on this

  • thank you so mutch for putting this up!!!

  • Guys, please please please read the book first, the movie leaves out a LOT of detail as well as many of the parts.

  • thank you suraGQ2011. Great Movie.

  • Plant seeds would do nothing. the sun is blocked out by ash in the book so the plants cant survive

  • @hobominded Ok, there was a nuclear war or something that caused this?

  • @deloreandmc88 - SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

(the book implies it was a meteorite)

  • @deloreandmc88 i dont think it was nuclear war, no patches of radiation killing them. for a meteor the ash would be getting better everyday, not worse. also for nukes idk how the ash would be, but i dont think it would be getting worse each day. someone suggested because of all the ash that it was mass volcanic eruptions, which explains why the ash is continuously getting worse but it never really hints at anything other than bright flashes which could be any of the 3

  • @hobominded yeah but there are lamps that imitate sunlight. And you can promote artificial rainfall nowadays. so the ash would be reduced.

  • @MousseTauChocolate hmmm.... i guess the UV lights would work if u had a bunch of hand cranked generators since the apocolypse knocked out all the power, and if the plants could survive off ash for nutrients... unless its possible to dig far enough into the ash to find dirt...? idk

  • @hobominded why knocked out power? with the exception of photovoltaic all power plants (escpecially nuclear power plants) would still work. they would support energy for uv lights which would enable the growth of plants.

  • @MousseTauChocolate i don't think the book even explained why the power went out. LOL

  • @hobominded i did just remember though that right as it was happening on the night that he woke up in bed and started the bath running, the power cut out during that and never came back on. but im not really sure why it went out tbh the book doesnt say

  • @hobominded stupid book.

  • @hobominded just wondering, wouldnt UV rays work?

  • @BadVoodo0 other dude said that somewhere in the comments too lazy to copy/paste my reply X D

  • @hobominded how about hydroponics ...... going to the moon.........all armies and goverments work together for peice

  • @kazakhmafia1 Pssh, as if. We humans are not reliable for "teamwork", just look into history! "The sound which reverberates most throughout the course of human history is the beating of war drums". We will never work together and this movie is a true prediction of the near future (look how normal and modern and peaceful everything is in the movie in his memories). Besides, if we get to the moon than every country will start claiming sections of it, New World all over again... -_-

  • @IloveMIT8923 thats total bullshit. you said"The sound which reverberates most throughout the course of human history is the beating of war drums." but thats not what koestler meant. you know it takes team work to have a war right? we dont HAVE to work together. but your not going to get anything efficent done by yourself. you cant build a building by yourself. you said "look how normal and modern and peaceful everything is in the movie in his memories" thts to show contrast.

  • @VampyreSeth666 It may take the lives of young soldiers to win the wars for old men but still, today, it only takes two people to arm an ICBM, one ICBM fired and the whole world is put into chaos. For instance, during the Cold war, the United States launched a test missle into the sky, the Soviets had no idea if it was a weapon or not and one Soviet ICBM commander had sixteen minutes to decide whether it was a weapon and if they should counterattack or if it was harmless to the Soviets.

  • @VampyreSeth666 To be honest, the rest of your arguement is ambiguous so I am not sure if this is even effective against the argument you are trying to prove. But, I do know you can build a building by yourself; if you are talking about little cottages, of course someone could build one by his or herself but if you are talking about skyscrapers, still yes - might take some time but he or she will get it done, sonner or later.

  • @IloveMIT8923 where do you get the material to build a building? where do u learn to build a building? other people. sooner or later? you sound REAL sure about tht

  • @VampyreSeth666 I know I am mostly boring this from some Call of Duty commercial or something but it only takes one man to start a war, no teamwork is needed there. Same thing with the human population, we never like to work together. For every communist, there will be a fascist; for every democrat, there will be a Republican; for every left, there will always be a right. And yes, it is to show contrast, right now, it feels calm and peaceful in the world but I know that is not true.

  • @VampyreSeth666 So, in the end, my point is correct.

  • @IloveMIT8923 uh no your not.it may take one man to START a war,but to HAVE a war are ttly different things. just cus there are opposers, doesnt mean we dont work together. the reason there is communism and democracy, and the whole fucking reason we have countries is because of people working together. think of all the shit u look up on the internet. all the information. do think its always just been there? NO! the whole reason we get smarter as humans, is we use shit other people figured out.

  • @VampyreSeth666 Okay, I see what happened. You misunderstood what I meant by "working together", the person I was replying too was using countries as the subjects. I am not talking about individual humans, I am talking about countries not working together. Please get the subject straight before you go off the handle bars like that.

  • @IloveMIT8923 and a country is made up of a group of individuals so, really you were

  • @hobominded ya but the seeds are still edible, you can even eat leather if you have to

  • @hobominded

In the book what caused the disaster? In the film it looks to be global warming

  • Anyone else here because they were too lazy to do summer reading? ^.^

  • @SnowBoarderX94 Is the book part of your required reading for school? Seriously, let me know, peace.

  • @romnsch13 it was 1 of 4 books to chose from for our school's summer reading. we had to read two and i did, just not this one. i just didnt have the time to read this but liked the summary given so i thought i'd watch the movie. and i knew others would probably be watching instead of reading. looking back i made a typo in my comment haha. the else was just compulsive, and shouldnt have been there.

  • @SnowBoarderX94 Thanks for getting back to me on that. Wow,... that is some heavy suggested reading. Do you think they are trying to give you some hints? I am no kook but I will say this,.... there is something heading into our solar system that will cause lots of problems for earth. Listen to what Robert duvall says in the film about ignoring all the scoffers, and that he believed something bad was going to happen. Study this stuff man, it may just save your life. Peace, Be safe.

  • damn im hungry for some 200 year old salisbury steak

  • This movie's so underrated!

  • well, its a good thing we gota bunch of plant seeds locked away in sum under ground vault somewhere

  • @LINDYyeahfeckyou haha and that somewhere is in my homeland...Nice.

  • @LINDYyeahfeckyou Which is in the northern icecaps of Norway which can easily be flooded with feets of water

  • i wish it was subbed to spanish...

  • @007m80 i do

  • The disaster couldn't have been a nuclear war because nobody would have survived the subsequent radiation poisoning long enough to become a cannibal. The disaster couldn't have been a meteor because the narrator says that the would is getting colder over time; a meteor blast would have induced an immediate sub-zero winter that would have gradually grown warmer over a long time as the skies cleared of dust. The likely culprit is continuous immense volcanic eruptions elsewhere in the world.

  • @jimtrueblue99 I think Mccarthy intentionally didn't share that information because he didn't want to distract from the true meaning of his book. If he said something like a nuclear war did it, people would say the main theme of his novel would be some sort of commentary on man's thirst for war. Anything in nature, people would say the theme was that we aren't taking good enough care of the planet, and this was the outcome. He wanted people to see the love between father and son, that's it.

  • i read and reread and read this book this summer

  • @bearpublic Yup i did to read the book this summer and I dont read. For fun that shows how great the book is

  • OMFG I LOVE YOU FINALLY I FOUND THIS MOVIE ON YOUTUBE I SUBBED TO YOU BTW

  • I think the post apocolypytic world depicted in the movie is the result of an environmental disaster. However, i'm sure nuclear weapons were no doubt launched somewhere along the line

  • @heliot58 i've read it was most likely a meteor impact

  • The whinyness of the child character and how naive he is, was the fly in the ointment for me in this film. A child of his age, having witnessed the horrors he has, would already be calloused and introverted, like child soldiers in Sierra Leone. Yes, he is weak and in need of protection, but why is he also so full of wonder and curiosity? I haven't read the book, so perhaps the portrayal is different there. Also, casting should have been less "angelic" and more "stray dog". Great film otherwise!

  • @ffmenguc He was raised in a house in the woods with only his mother and father which would explain the curiosity and the naive outlook on the world they probably left mere months before the beginning of the story and his father is not some rebel telling kids to murder and rape or they will kill them and their families

  • @ffmenguc The Child was raised in this world so its only natrual for him to wounder and have question. How ever old he Child is. Is how long the world bin in hell.

Also the casting was very hard for them. They said with out the right child actor they wasent even gonna make the film

  • so must have been natural disasters then

  • @worstalentscout it was a nuclear war

  • @xDjohnxD

official story is nuclear war ?

a super volcano eruption would be more realistic

  • @worstalentscout true that but one of the answers from a highschool board is nuclear war. I'm not sure about the true story. my bad (:

  • @noobcrusher141 You probably don't care about this anymore but I think that nuclear winter last decades and I think the reason he says its getting colder is because he is losing hope, just my thoughts on it though.

  • YES! Thanks for this!

  • apreciate you heaps for putting this up!

  • Comment removed

  • thumbs up to whoever played fallout 3 !!!

  • Damm nature u sca...no...no...Im finding it hard to mast...no....Ok this movie is just awesome. The End.

  • Yo aragorn

  • This movie is one of the sadest and one of the most beautiful movies i ever seen.

  • this aint mere ranger from the north this is aragorn son of arathorn

  • this aint mere ranger from the north this as aragorn son of arathorn

  • FINALLY! A video that doesn't demand that a click on a link and then fill out some damn survey to watch a movie.

  • I would've tried to find any abandoned cars that are still in somewhat good condition and tried to restart it. And siphon gas and salvage any parts I find along the way if it worked.

Sure beats walking, in freezing temps, starving, and cannibals everywhere.

  • @FortitudeOfHeaven id just go to 7-11

  • this book was amazing

  • This was the only movie that ever made me cry lol.

  • surpirsed it not deleted by yt yettt

  • 11:32 That is why we have Lamaze.

  • I read the book, and I found it to have this strange pull that chills you; not in the horrors that you read within it but in the matter-of-fact way the story is told. Creepy book. My two cents: The The Road is about "if" and "how". If the world simply just died how would humanity hold itself together, ie; a marriage, society, and parental duty.

  • In this movie how did the world really lost life?

  • Comment removed

  • @fishNguitars what the fuk are you talkin about

  • @noobcrusher141 because of a nuclear winter

  • I can imagine as a book this is good but as a film it was poor, disjointed and a waste of time.

  • @noobcrusher141 I think it's because of something called a 'nuclear winter' which would occur after a nuclear war, when massive amounts of dust would be thrown into the atmosphere, blocking out most of the sun's heat. Therefore, the planet would grow colder.

  • @RighteousPsycho No, it's beacsue of an Asteroid impact that produces dust clouds that block the sun. That was what killed the dinosaurs. The author was inspired by an article in Scientific American.

  • @Caucasusdream dinosors dont exist. havent you read the bible. or you some muuslim terrist

  • @smokeymcgreenston Go to hell, anyone can believe whatever they want to believe. Thats freedom of religion, and I for one, an very sceptic about the bible, I believe in scientific facts and hard evidence, not text in a 2000 year old book that noone trully knows about..
