Thank you for posting this original arrangement of The Entertainer. I was truly 'entertained'! :) I don't understand why there seems to be some confusion with the title of this post. Do people not understand what an ''original arrangement'' of a piece means?! You truly have lot of patience. Please keep up all of the great work! ~ Adam
I think the hand crossing is simply because he already knows the original version of this piece -- and so when he moves the RH into the lower octave, it's easier to keep the same notes played by the same hand rather than switch.
I just admire all your work. I think I watched every single Joplin piece you uploaded (Sorry, not a bach fan) and they are all absolutly beutiful, especialy this one.
I'm still waiting for Searchlight Rag in a more "Traditional" version (I.E exactly as written and faster).
@BachScholar Have you ever heard or played any of Jimmy Yanceys pieces? I would love to here you play a few of his. I started playing piano (keyboard) just yesterday, and Jimmy Yancey and Scott Joplin are at the to p of my list to learn.
Do you have any recommendations on where to get learning materials? I listen to things you play (and i hate to sound like every other person that has commented) but it inspires me to get better, just watching your fingers glide so effortlessly across the keys.
The beautiful section starting at 2:04 always sends shivers up my spine, never more so than in this brilliant interpretation. Best "Entertainer" ever!
This version is much better than the original in my opinion. Being a piano player I wish I had the music for this arrangement. The stride piano playing really adds pizzazz to the performance. The worlds greatest ringtone.
I took piano lessons for 18 years, taught little kids for a few years and played on my own for many years after that until my husband convinced me that I should quit and get what he called a "real" job. You make me realize what I have missed. I can only say one thing - YOU ARE PHENOMENAL!!! What a wonderful performance!!! I cannot even express in words how much I enjoy listening and watching you play. Thank God for YouTube!!!
Amazing! I've played this song many times and listened to it for such a long time, but this is just truly a magnificent interpretation... with the extended stride, the hand-crossover and the crazy slide at the ending - and it works perfectly because you play it so tight and relaxed. Well done :)
I took a little vacation from ragtime on YouTube just about the time Cory was putting up the School of Ragtime videos. This is the first recent video I clicked on today.
I have to comment on the embellishments here. I like most of them, and the ones I find a little jarring don't bother me all that much because of the overall effect.
As for playing as written, I call BS on that. I've heard Jelly Roll Morton and Eubie Blake play Joplin, and neither played as written.
You could try tuning well temperament instead of equal temperament see how that comes out. Most of the music you play, especially classical, I understand was written for that. That would be a good experiment.
Haha, I am in the process of learning how to play this right now - Bachscholar, thank you so much for both the tips on your seminar site as well as the inspiration from watching this. The fact that you add your own special touches makes it all that much more interesting watch and listen to.
Tokkemon: Bach was doing variations on the theme of Vivaldi, Beethoven on Mozart, Liszt on Paganini, Satie on Clementi, Waller on Grier, Tatum on Dvorak ...
The Entertrainer is in public domain and BachScholar does not claim he is the original composer. The credit is given to Joplin.
Also, keep in mind composer write music for a generic performer of a certain skill levels. Some players are better or worse, have better techniques, more flexible or rigid fingers, larger or smaller hands
Tokkemon - Ragtime should be played exactly as written? ROTFL!! Now this could perhaps be said about Bach or Mozart... but not ragtime, which by the way contributed to the origin of Jazz which is all about improvisation!
Cory...fantastic! I absolutely love it. Please, please keep this camera angle...it's inspiring and educational for us piano students to see your arm movements, posture, and physical approach to the keyboard.
Oh My God! Thanks you so much for putting this up for me! I love the little "extras" that you put in to the piece. It makes a lot of fun to play! Thanks again Cory I hope to see you play Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement soon!
I think I have to learn this one this year :) Its sound a lot of fun to play! :) Is it around the same level as Maple Leaf Rag?! If so It shouldn't be any problem, good job! :) 5*

Nice! I don't see why the crossing over of hands is needed, though..?
jghcky 5 months ago
@jghcky i think the hand crossing over is cause his right hand has more coordination so he's using that hand for the harder part

BachScholar you´d better go into hiding - the Ragtime Police is after you.

Here's the citation from the Ragtime police:
- Reckless driving (dangerously crossing lanes in two way traffic)
- Ignoring traffic signs, particularly speed limit signs (speeding in "not too fast" lane)
- DUI (traces of stride and jazz found - known to use even more dangerous substances like boogie woogie)
