well, I like volodos very much, but the "fire" is for me not needed in this piece, I prefer horowitz or cziffra... volodos uses here the fire of cziffra, but even cziffra himself did this not in the sonata,
@seanrcollins I just heard Hamelin's version and it lacks what all versions lack: fire. And that's exactly why I like this version, the power and passion. It's like the other performers are afraid of the piano. Sure there are versions with other qualities but not with this amazing strength. Not even Horowitz has this.
@seanrcollins I recorded it. Strangly Arcadi himself didn't like his playing that evening. I guess he uses a different standard than us "normal people"
@davidbaker03 have you ever considered the possibility that maybe you would dislike Liszt his interpretation of this piece too? This has power, non of the other interpretations have this kind of fire in it. In some way, they all sound the same, this graps you with the balls. BTW Don't forget the recording quality is ineriour. Yuo have to hear this live.
Thank you for sharing this!!! It's wonderful to be able to listen to this fantastic performance again!! (..heard him do this program in August (Salzburg) Everyone was spellbound and transfixed!!) He's unbelievable!!
I've now listend to the entire sonata four times. It is like a drug. I have to hear it again and again. I think it is like a "concentrate of all Volodos emotions and skills". Everthing that makes him such a unique wonderful pianist is in this sonata... His endless love for the piano you hear in every note.
This performance is phenomenal!!!!!! So powerfull and full of color. One of the best versions I have heard. Amazingly well recorded too. Thanks for these marvelous uploads!!!
He starts around 0:46 enjoy...the noise that you might hear from time to time is my HI-MD Walkman MZ-RH1, a small device but it can make good quality recordings...

there are those certain pianists who have no sense of musicality at all

This guy is mad. He came to Portugal and I went to see him.
While playing this sonata, Volodos broke a string because of his fury.
Overall was a very good concert. Too bad I forgot to record it.

Merci infiniment pour cet enregistrement, je commençais à tristement penser que Volodos n'allait jamais enregistrer cette sonate, faite pour lui !
