They obviously developed a robot to help them test weapons. Fruit have the about the same mass and consistency as their own bodies so they are ideal for testing out the effects of their guns. They made the robot too intelligent though, and it developed feelings toward the fruit. Then it found the small guys a threat to the fruit and ultimately it's own existence and eradicated them all.
