  • Wow, thanks for posting this. I moved to weymouth about 6 weeks later and moved to Commercial Road, never saw such an event in all the 10 years I lived there. Great piece of nostalgic history

  • Amazing video I Used to live in Weymouth for a few years when I was just a wee kid , and I remember the steam trains running throught the streets pulling or pushing wagons.. Surprised that the tracks are still in the streets and the loco can still run on them. Great.

  • amazing,sat glued to it.watched it 4 times now,still fascinated.

  • Wow. Enjoyed every second of this. I was born just a few years to late to remember this ever being used! But my Dad told me about it. Thanks so much for the upload.

  • Just noticed that the yellow van(?) you see at the end has 'Starbug 3' written on it :D

  • this quayline was MAD, full size trains traveling through the heart of Weymouth. I've walked along most of the route through the streets and I thought 'how on earth did they ever get them [the trains] to fit'? Still my Dad has fond memories of this line, taking the boat to Jersey in the 1960's and 1970's.

  • is the line, or tramway, still used? even if it's not very often. like the class 33!

  • shunters on tram ways what ever next. tornado steaming on a narrow gauge track lol

  • That's INSANE...

  • why did they get rid of it =[

  • Fascinating video was down here recently on the Dorset Explorer and wondered what the lines were doing there and still intact. Wonder if the deltic would have made it down there.

  • all those in favour of a weymouth car-plough, like here!

  • I love this.

  • amazing -im 22yrs old and ive never seen anything like this. soo funny to see the train having to wait for the cars - not like that these days. lots of people taking photos - did the trains often do this route?

  • bonkers..completely bonkers..luv it

  • Nice. I've seen loads of street running in the Americas, but this is the only one I've seen in the UK. They should definitely bring this line back into use!

Best to stick a bell on the loco, though.

Anyone fancy building a replica J70?

  • An amazing video. Only travelled this line once and was quiet young at the time.

Nice to see all them old cars with a class 33 running next to them!

  • That was too much too big of those train, should be company for new tram-link metro-way better in the nearest the future. Bloody hell of that is so crazy like high train-way of the road. They will try get throughout the road to pass-away down the road!

  • Iwent on this train many a time going to Jersey, was always fun seeing the driver trying to bump the trains off the tramway. great memories

  • Very good film. I travelled on The Weymouth Tramway, when I was young to catch the ferry over to Jersey.

  • This was very common in many cities in Denmark untill a few years ago. It was necessary to place the tracks through downtown in order to be able to reach the habours..

  • Must be the strangest thing I've ever seen, regular diesel loco driving down your regular street complete with local cars whizzing past alongside the train, Crazy!!! but I love it.

Health & safety would have a field day at this today!!! Would never happen again!!!

It must be an event that didn't happen too often, judging by the way people left their cars parked up all hap-hazard like. Like the way all the awkward ones were bumped out of the way... Brilliant!!!

Im so glad you took this film 5*

  • This is utterly barmy. Look at the cars driving right along side the train!

  • MY family and I went to weymouth in 1986 and on the last day there we visited the harbour to watch the fishermen land a haul of crabs, We heard a strange noise behind us and had a shock to see the train coming along to catch the ferry. I have never forgot that moment - pure magic

  • Wow, a train running through the streets, truly amazing! Were the cars they moved illegally parked? When did this service cease running on a regular basis?

Something so unique as this should NEVER be taken away.

  • exellent, would love to see royal scots grey do this, thanks

  • That makes me feel old, this was only a year after I was born!

    Great video.

    J

  • shows the total ignorant attitude to railway traffic by car drivers in the UK,

    excellent video

  • @0saintclark0 DONT WORRY IM SURE THAT YOU WOULD NOT BE RETARDED ENOUGH TO IGNORE ROAD MARKINGS?

  • This brings back memories of hols in Weymouth as a child. The boat train would creep along the street right next to the putting green!!! Probably pulled by a 0-6-0 pannier tank or similar .

    Great video.

  • Did the trains stop at the traffic lights?

  • @Charlesn132 Lol Probs Not :D I Was About 2 In 1994 :) never seen that happen so i thought id have a look what it wulda bin like great vid :D

  • When did this cease? It was unusual, but no doubt a great feature in the town

  • Is it out of the question now to have a shuttle from Weymouth station to the quay with a GWR tank and two carriages or an auto train during the Olympics? The council would only need a water tanker and coal somewhere nr the main line station.

Why are people supposed to be stupid these days, not safe to run it because of idiots? It ran for years and years without problems.Tourist's should have to park in a car park-and maybe even use the Steam shuttle! Love this video 5*

  • is this a railway or tramway as others have entitled their videos?

  • was there at the weekend, and i took loads of pics of the track bed to the ridicule of my girlfriend.. how often, if ever does it run? 5 stars btw

  • Love it Love it

  • Brilliant video, thanks for sharing with us all. I remember in the early 1970's a class 03 shunting black oil tanks onto the quay, was an awesome sight, as it held up the traffic!!

  • LOL loved the way the, blokes just moved them cars out of the way the best bit was at the beginning when that old astra got completely towed away would loved to of seen the look on the owners face hehehe.

  • That's the craziest thing I've ever seen! 5*

  • great video must go and see a train on that line

  • Thank you very much. I shall show my kids this, they will be amazed!

  • One of the few street running routes in Britain, Great vid m8!

  • Would be nice if the Portland and Weymouth council did reopen it for the Olympics as it would meet this 'Green' Agender and making it more vauble for public transport. But sadly a lot off the public are more stupid now and would try and race the Units or Loco hauled stock.

  • this is so cool!! i've lived in weymouth since 1987, and must have been about 6 or 7 when i remember being in my dads car on the harbour, and staring open mouthed as this huge train lumbered past, i miss the old days!

  • WHAT part of KEEP CLEAR - TRAINS don'y you understand sierra driver???

    :) Very interesting video

  • A superb video. Such as shame that this line looks doomed , a wonderful anachronism should be preserved as a tourist attraction, similar to the Bristol harbour line.

  • What a fascinating video. Such a shame that the branch has now passed into the history books. Thank you for being there to record it.

  • WOW amazing video,

    Loved every second of this,

i have been searching for this footage for years.

  • Great video and glad you recorded the event and shared it on here. Not a great deal of the line working on youtube. been down there in the 80s and 90s but never saw a loco when it was still working. I gather the rail line is severed now. Shame as its rae to see a loco on the streets in this country save for a mishap LOL

  • very nice video

  • even the pigs get in the way...

  • a nice prototype to model in oo or N

  • Fantastic video, you think it would have been quicker/easier to bump the vehicles out of the way with the loco! :D

  • there is no longer a train there

  • i been on that road wen i was a little kid

  • I remember coming to the UK on the Channel Island Sealink ferries then going on this train when I was young in the 70's but can't remember whether we went to my uncle in Southampton or family friends in Gloucestershire on this route out of Weymouth. I don't remember changing trains so it must have been a direct route to Southampton or Gloucestershire.

  • Must have been Southampton. The boat trains went to London via Southampton.

  • Sealink did operate from Weymouth to the Channel Islands, it was a former Great Western service.

  • cool video

  • wahhhh runs through the street?

    i gotta go there :D

    still do it now?

  • it does not go through the street anymore it stoped in 1998

  • Awsome

  • nice two tone lovley::)

  • fantastic video truley brilliant i would love to see it up and running again new fav for me 5stars
