Well Omega Squad is the best there is- even if the private wasn't ever in a real firefight, he still was trained very well, and as such is able to deal well in a firefight. The reason you didn't see other squadmates often (and trust me, there WERE times when you could see them) was because they all got killed by the Locusts, except for the Sergeant.

Well, it IS the Unreal 3 Engine, so pretty graphics is expected. My computer ran the game pretty well, despite the CPU being strained by FRAPS.
