  • How could anybody compare this with Hilary Hahn play ?

  • It's so hard listening to normal music after this.

  • One of the best Youtube contributions ever! I imagine this staying up (all 3) even after the internet is gone, our digital selves dead and cremated, the recordings decaying... but for the Ferras Sibelius Concerto, floating in the subtle atmosphere; how can the trace of a musical moment so moving be lost?

  • La mejor versión del concierto :D

  • i love it

  • je m'en lasse pas de cette interprétation de christian ferras

  • why are ppl applauding??? wtf

  • probably the best Sibelus in the world!

  • Phenomenal performance. Ferras was a very wonderfully gifted musician; he died too young.

  • thnxfor uploading:)

  • darkness, despair and beauty....

  • 29 dislikes ?!? does Youtube allow imbeciles to stain total genius? hmm, i am going to have to have a talk with them LOL

  • Christian Ferras (geb. 17. Juni 1933 in Le Touquet, gest. 14.

  • By comparing with the others, I would say this performance recorded by this video is historically amazing. Even comparing with Itzhak Perlman's, which is the undoubtedly incredible, with the sound made by extraordinary instrument, the total organization of this performance is more special, including the performance of orchestra. I guess this conductor succeeded to produce this supreme work. By compare more and more, I recommend to anyone who wants to listen Sibelius Op. 47, once listen Ferras.

  • violoniste prodigieux, talentueux, un virtuose disparu trop tôt.....

  • Magnifissant!Ferras is unique

  • nothing can match this!!!

    An Angel!

  • @alexilmagnifico You are right. Angels don't match each other. Neither Oistrakh nor Ferras.

  • What a vibrato and glissando!

  • wow, I really liked the sudden zoom-out at 6:40!!! It matches the music and adds drama to the already dramatic masterpiece!!

  • As great as Ferras was, the orchestra wasn't especially impressive.

  • That's right you clap for him in between movements!

  • have always loved this piece, but the Ferras performance is a little too fast, imho.

  • What orchestra is this?

  • @Yossarian392 The Orchestre National de France.

  • what a performance and what a conductor!

  • hm...amazing i do not like this 28 people who disagree

  • what powerful sadness and darkness, the tragedy music can express, without words, and magically tears streaming down a noble face.

  • beautiful Christian Ferras.... this is Sibelius ' s best imterpretation

  • THANK YOU

  • OH SOOOO BEAUTIFUL AND WHAT SUBLIME VIOLIN PLAYING....NO SHOWING OFF ....JUST PLAYING THIS WONDERFUL MUSIC TRUTHFULLY

  • OH SOOOO BEAUTIFUL

  • thank you for this...

  • fabulous

  • my god, is he wearing a freakin' tux for a solo? Must've burned- almost as much as his soul!! POW!

  • Comment removed

  • He uses 4th finger until 1:13 intentionally.. A fact to think about

  • wow simply amazing ^__^

:) you have 2 love this

  • He plays like a god, but comitted suicide in 1982. Life is stranger than fiction!

  • starting form 03: 37...almost cry

  • @huajiluhai me too,same feeling

  • i know that every violinist has his way of playing this piece and each of us choose the one that they like most, but any Oistrakh sound version of this peace puts this in a pocket...

  • Those g minor arpegios over the b natural sustained by the celli is simply genious. Pure creativity and imagination.

Christian Ferras did a great job. The man was an excellent interprettor of music.

  • going to see this performed live next week!!! super excited!!!

  • I'm going to see this performed live tonight. :D

  • @sredman211 Tracy Bu just played it with the UNLV Symphony. Is that the performance you are talking about?

  • Sibelius is rolling in his grave....to hide the erection Ferras gave him. Amazing!

  • @STRANGEAUDIO :))) tch tch tch nowadays we think all in terms of sex. loool I only don't agree with you because i am sure he is not in his grave. :) He was in heaven enjoying it utterly . lol. love it.

  • I am doing some research on Sibelius's music and trying to choose what would be my suggestions to give to the Conductior of the Allentown Philharmonic, Diane Wintry on what she might select to have the Orchestra play on an All Scandinavian Composers Night sometime in the future. This is a good selection.

  • This never gets old. Ferras, Zubin Mehta, and Sibelius are all fabulous.

  • Enescu influence .. really enjoy Ferras samlee0519 thanks much .

  • 28 people don't know what perfection is like...

  • This is incredible!

  • 2:05 THAT BOW CONTROL!!!

  • 13:50

  • Suffering in life can be turned into something beautiful. You have to experience some hard times in your life to be able to play like this.

  • I started to play violin because of this concerto, it was my favorite one and still one of my favorites (but now my favorite is the tchaikovsky violin concerto)

  • Ok, he's brilliant and it's a very good rendition but.... The vibrato sounds like a mosquito on cocaine. Way too much. Some friggin awaesome fingering (no giggling please :P) and bowing though.

  • i really see how much he worked on vibrato throughout his career

  • the conductor looks like maxim vengerov

  • Sisu Suomi

  • Wish he'd lay off the caffeine....

  • The solo from 3:36 made me fall in love w/ the violin all over again when I heard it on the radio (it became my "valentine" so- to-speak").

  • My mum forced me to play the violin when I was 6. Absolutely hated it. Only practised when asked and my first violin teacher said I had no future in music. When I was 12, I heard a recording of Ferras playing the 1st mvt of the Tchaikovsky. Now I'm studying Music at uni...

  • ahhh i wish i could play this like him

*pressing the play button over and over again*

  • this is so beautiful :) i hope i can play like him one day ^^

  • standard!

  • i've heard it played better by a 16 year old at my school

  • he makes it sing and breathe like the human voice. The cadenza is gorgeous.

  • he makes it sing and breathe like the human voice

  • MERAVIGLIOSO !!!

  • @jibrocks1337 I'm sure it does - although I recall this particular concerto as being one of the most difficult to play.

  • Eargasmic.

  • How could a man who made so much beauty , light , ....die in such a pathetic way....? Poor man...

  • @musicsmine219 How did he die?

  • @Depressionsbehandlin He committed suicide when he was 49 :(

  • @Depressionsbehandlin

    Ferras? Committed suicide, I believe.

  • @jibrocks1337 cuz no two violinists play alike. He plays it so crisp. i want to fuck it.

  • Pensar que este genio acabó suicidándose....

  • ferras is really one of the best violoinist ever, if you dont agree with this, just listen the franck sonata

  • My god, I was completely enthralled watching this; it is so intense.

  • Every time I watch the section before 2:24 , I think "....DAMN."

  • how can you dislike this?

  • @jb0Ogi3 I suspect you didn't watch this performance before typing that, sir whoever-you-are.

  • @jb0Ogi3 I wouldn't say the violin is better than the guitar or vice versa... both are wonderful and can do things the other cannot... the choice of instrument is not which is better, but which a person prefers... if you are drawn to the guitar, then so be it. Others might prefer something else. Now take your ignorant and narrow thinking elsewhere before you start receiving a handful for your misconduct... there is STILL TIME TO DELETE YOUR COMMENT

  • @jb0Ogi3 umm I play both and violin is much more fun to play!!!

  • Wow!

  • I saw this piece played in concert in October, and I couldn't blink the entire time. The people around me were either crying or simply not breathing. the soloist was Henning Kraggerud, and the only word I can use to describe it was perfect.

  • @95eternalsunshine I was there, too, I loved Kraggerud, "not breathing" described my feeling, I either strained forward or leant back drinking it in, but so I'm Finnish and Sibelius and especially this concerto is in our blood. Before hearing this I listened here to Oistrakh and Handel whose playing is masterful. Yet this performance has moved me to tears, it was so wonderful. Maybe his fate moved me, too. I hope that a CD exists.

  • I wonder what Sibelius would have said if he had heard this recording.

  • I think this is the best version of this concerto ever. LOVE Ferras.

  • OH...WHAT A FINGERING !!!! VERY STYLISH

  • wow! his playing expressed some features not expressed by other artists... I like the fresh new elements here which I did not hear in others

  • those poor people who disliked this...

  • @SceneQueenx it must be have been Vengerov 28 times

  • 7:27 is one of the best violin solos that i ever heard

  • In this one...Ferras poured out all of his inner soul! If you dont like his playing here of Sibelius violin concerto - .........I have no words.

  • wOW I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, THE SONG IS BEAUTIFUL, I WANT TO CRY, THIS SONG AND THIS INTERPRETATION ARE EXCELENTS GOOD BLESS YOU Sibelius AND FERRAS!!

  • I feel the chill wind on my cheeks when I listen to this piece! It's amazingly sincere, beautifully played, and I'm sure it reflected Sibelius' way of hearing the concerto.

  • toca muy hermoso, pero porque tuvo que suicidarse, porque!!!!!!!!......

  • 3:36 Is the most beautiful part for violin I have ever heard!

  • @EHLOCALz If you liked it, you may also really enjoy

    5:19

    Trio Mendelssohn d mvt 1

(Casals, Cortot, Thibaud's rendition) (u can watch it here on youtube)

    I this it is spectacular.

Please write me what you think of it. :)

  • Beautiful moving piece. Really bring out that sense of coldness and empty sadness supposedly representing the cold wastes of the Finnish homeland.

4:57 chills me to the spine

  • I love the tortured, frenzied and grieving character Ferras gets here. It is the musical equivalent to bawling your eyes out. This concerto is like a fever-dream when Ferras plays it. I've never heard anyone play it quite like this before; It is certainly very unique.

  • @TheMaestroBrad Thats a great description, I certainly did 'bawl my eyes out'.

  • Heard Joshua Bell playing this piece on WQXR-FM while driving this a.m. VERY nice! Anybody else like J.B.?

  • @analogyman Just heard him play Sibelius live a couple of hours ago. Brilliant to listen to, erratic to watch. As one of the most influential conductors I have ever worked with once said to my section, "Too much lettuce." I think Josh's strength lay more in his interpretation than anything, though he does have a wonderful color palette and huge dynamic range. He is either over-rated or under-rated.

  • @analogyman Hmmmmm.... this is a clip on Ferras, not J.B. Go post your VERY nice post on J.B. clips all day and night! In another word, go somewhere else.

  • is this the Dragonetti; Milanollo he is playing in this video?

  • 23 of you clueless folk don't understand the gravity of this video.

  • it has some breaking points withe the mendelssohn concerto

  • Thanks for uploading! If anyone is interested Ida Haendel's live recording on youtube is pretty amazing too.

  • This interpretation comes in second in my book. Ferras brings something very sweet to this piece that others cannot match.

  • @seattlegrrlie Who is first?

  • @MusicCloud1 I like Gil Shaham's interpretation better. It is a little more raw and intense.

  • Do you know that Formula One drivers and long distances swimmers loose lots of weight every race?

I the soloist spent like 20Kg's in the entire vídeo...

  • @FloripanoBR

They don't. I suggest you find the caloric content of body fat and compare that to say, how many calories you burn in an hour of jogging. Otherwise weight loss would be easy......

  • @ethositachi It was a joke... It supposed to be funny...

(But apparently my joke failed, and you probably thought I was serious. So I'm not gonna say you've no sense of humor...)

  • I am surprised to say that really don't like his interpretation. It seems prissy somehow. Not how Sibelius should be.

  • This is truly, magnificently breath-taking.

  • This is so beautiful it makes me cry. And I dont feel ashamed because this is music at the highest level.

  • For me this is not only a masterpiece of Sibelius violinconcerto.

This is my favourite piece !!

Ferras playing Sibelius violin concerto is the "pinnacle" of classical music for me!

  • impresionante, maravilloso, sin palabras....

  • Just beautiful. The vibrato is a bit much for most songs, but for this piece, it emphasizes the beauty of each note.

  • FERRAS IS THE GREATEST ! BIGGER THAN LIFE !!!

    And Maxim Vengerov :D

  • anyone else get a little frustrated with the wildly wobbling vibrato in the opening section? came off way too strong for my taste

  • Masterful and moving. Complete genius from start to finish. Thanks so much for posting this!!!

  • one of the greatest violin concertos...been one of my favorites for a decade, since I was a kid....its so depressing and sad and yet so optimistic and masculine

  • Like this if you hate audiences who clap in-between movements!

  • @ImHansHi I find it okay audiences who clap in-between movements. It's quite flattering for the soloist, in fact

  • @ImHansHi go to a concerto like that and if you manage to contain your enthusiasm enough to restrain from clapping, come tell us.

  • @ImHansHi believe it or not the whole thing about "not clapping in between movements" is a modern idea. Back from the beginning it was appropriate to clap after any movement that one truly enjoyed.

  • @ImHansHi as a classical performer I don't mind a genuine emotional response from the audience.Yes, Ill-informed clapping between many movements by ignorant audiences is annoying, but how can you not clap after such a fiery finish? Why practice restraint just because a stiff and stodgy culture has evolved that often doesn't allow room for a heart-felt reaction?

  • word!

  • @ImHansHi actually, no one really knows where that tradition originated. Mozart was always extremely upset when an audience did not clap in between movements

  • @ImHansHi well it depends on the reason. if they dont know then no i dont like it. if it is because the movement was so moving and well played that they could not NOT clap then yes i do like it

  • @ImHansHi sometimes, such as this case, people are so moved and so amazed at what they just witnessed that they MUST have some sort of reaction.

  • @ImHansHi I totally agree but imagine your self in there, could you hold it for 15 mins if Christian Ferras was playing this in front of you? :D

  • @ImHansHi Well I must agree with you, but they probably liked it so much, that they couldn't stop themself.. And it is perfect performance, so I would clap as well...

  • @ImHansHi Never mind the stiffs.

  • woow! Zubin Mehta!!! todo un pionero de la conduccion

  • The violinist's fingers are moving dazzlingly!!

I respect him exceedingly and love his music very much.

    suinjaoraosue

  • one of the best violinsounds what I ever heard.

  • thank you so much

  • He owned this piece.

  • The glissado at 4:19 is so awesome

  • Ferras ? memorable is he. MEHTA is such a sexy Israeli . Grew up with FRancescatti and Heifetz with this.Every phrase full of meaning. After opening bars he gets more control. Not a perfect bowman is he.Hahn Bell can outdo anyone.Perfect intonation ,Bow 'knowledge perfect!

  • @lovesGenet Do you have a comment or are you just rambling from your horny nature to couple of young and forgetful violinists?

  • @lovesGenet

Ferras recorded Sibelius'. as well as Tchaikovsky' under Karajan, and Won Grand Prix for both. His Tchaikovsky in particular is still being considered a mile stone. The Sibelius' also is much more better than this one. Mehta is an Indian jew, who never been performed in India !! always he was kicked out from there for his Zionist Idea as well as behaviors. I don't think that Heifetz nor Francescatti paid him or played under his button ever being an Eastern Jew.

  • @Mozart99900 Mehta did indeed conduct Heifetz!-at the innauguration of the Chandler Pavillon in L.A,on Dec.6th 1964.

  • @callasnuts well it's ok nevertheless Heifetz in particular has always his own Conductors that can understand his manner. And Mehta is not one of them I think

  • @Mozart99900 Silly, plain and simple a silly comment.

  • i love ferras interpretation

  • Oistrakh's interpretation is in a grander scale as compared to Ferras.

  • en que año fue esto?

  • old recordings r abt half tone higher ..tat's y probably y

  • is he really sharp, or is that just me?

  • WOW; this is just electrifying! All movements by Ferras are simply magnificant, especially the 2nd... I'm simply awe struck!!

  • The conducting is excellent! I like Ferras also.

  • The conducting is excellent! I like Ferras also.

  • 1:50-2:20 Simply perfect. That section always gives me chills

  • Creo que utiliza mucho vibratto y en parte arruina la atmósfera de frío que creo que le va bien a este concierto... pero es grandioso igualmente.

  • @danielwowman.... you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • clarinette at 11:15 my god!

  • 9:38 awesome.

  • 4:54 filled with will and ferocity. . .nietzsche'd be proud. . .
