  • Great great song.... =)

  • This is beautiful. A beautiful old bar-room ballad, the likes of which you never hear anymore. We used to drown our sorrows in ale and song in a sort of grim camaraderie, now we drown our inhibitions in a frenzy of indulgence and excess. The music reflects this. These days it's what moves your body, back then it was about what moved your heart. I can't say it was better or worse, but it was certainly different.

  • @TheWoodencrow this was probably the most well thought out youtube comment I have ever read, kudos sir!

  • Elvis Costello does an incredible version of this on his Kojak Variety album.. I really must get around to uploading that entire album, not much at all here anywhere.

  • isnt mainstream music produced by bean counters with charts, graphs and markets in mind?

Ive found most of my favorite meals in side street cafes....whatever!!!!!

  • Jill Morissey sang a beautiful version of this song on Crossing Jordan.

  • I'm ashamed of my generation and the ones after me. When will good music become mainstream? Will it ever happen? Will greed ALWAYS be more powerful then wanting to support amazing music? I'm losing faith in humanity.

  • Part 1 : Maybe your faith in humanity is shallow to begin with? When i read comment like "I'm ashamed of my generation," i can't help wonder if you're not simply using your taste in music as an excuse to revere in your own version of awesomeness (which is alright, but while spit on an entire generation, you go even as far as to predict doom for future generations?)

  • @Pianomantodd1 Part 2: It's not like greed or shitty music are newly released concepts.

When do you even get time for (contemptuous) shame, isn't life so short as it is? It's not like you owe the god of shame a debt, that if you don't fill your quota of daily shame he'll send some dudes to rough you up.

If your neighbor is jamming on some god awful shite that churns your stomack, it's not necessary to go ahead and puke on the sole of his feet to mark your disgust.

  • @Pianomantodd1 Part 3: With that kind of mindset, we'll all be stuck in a merry go round puke fest because I have to admit I've watched some bad b-movies, especially scifi that nobody should ever watch or enjoy as they actively kill brain cells. I still have to take supplements to compensate for the loss, haha. I'm not writing to be all judgy, I haven't got the qualifications, I am simply sharing my opinion.

  • @Pianomantodd1 Part 4: In one of my favorite writings by Bob Dylan,"Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie" there is a bit about self introspection (A small excerpt:

"In this ocean of hours I'm all the time drinkin'

Who am I helping, what am I breaking

What am I giving, what am I taking")

Read the whole thing if you get a chance, sorry my comments ended up being super long

@ terr0rkitten: thanks for the video

  • Makes me feel drunk just listening to Tom Waits sometimes

    Love it :) Beautiful

  • I'm ashamed of my generation.

  • @Dimbark

For this generation's taste in music? You shouldn't be. Do you know what single was the UK and US no. 1 when this album was released? Neither do I. But I bet it was shit. Popular affinity for bunk music is as timeless as it gets. Thank the lord for guys like Tommy Waits.

  • This song takes me so far away from reality when I listen to it. Tom Waits is great to listen to on lonely nights, hell he's great to listen to whenever.

  • so pretty

  • Tom says " a gentleman is someone whom can play the accordian-but doesn't."

  • @IRMOBOY1977 great quote Irmo.

  • Tom je t'aime.♥

  • how could someone dislike this

  • don't know why this songs makes my eyes wet...or do i know??

  • Whiskey and Cigaretts an Tom Waits!

  • @chrispycritter2 oof. yup.

  • @chrispycritter2 You got it buddy!

  • of course I do, I have taste... right now a bottle of a Jack Daniels.. and... but not to the end...(!) Tom Waits is a lovely bastard

  • In the wee hours of the 1970s Tom played a club in San Diego. I'd read his ads but was too young to go. Then we saw Zappa's Overnite Sensation show: Tom was the supporting act! We assumed Tom was another of Zappa's crazy projects. Here's a sot with more talent than you could drink singing like he's in a smokey dive -- accompanied by the clinking of two guys in the back kicking an empty bottle of Mad Dawg back and forth on the cement floor. Perfect! Was it part of the act? May we never find out!

  • I saw Tom live in the '70's because I'd heard The Nickel Over There on the wireless (!), and loved his music since. His poignant songs speak volumes to me as I age along with him. I like Frank's Wild Years best.

I like the idea of a sleep playlist, but I'd get sick of the couch.

  • He really is... He really is wonderful. I don't know what else to say. He has been a big influence on me and if I ever met him, I would love to shake his hand. A writer, Thomas Muldoon, pays homage to him in his new book: Smoking in Bathrooms. It is a fun read.

  • 208 likes, 3 dislkes, Tom, looks like you win again.

  • Just about everyone thinks I'm effing crazy for liking Tom Waits. Parents included. They pretend they aren't creeped out by his voice but I can see the hatred and disgust in their slightly furrowed brows and tight upper lips.

  • Auuurggh those three persons!!! How can you vote down on a thing like this, then you are just stupid thats all..

  • how can this be disliked? if you got to this page you must already have the idea of who tom waits is and what he creates with his music. love it

  • "Running through the graveyard We laughed, my friends and I

    We swore we'd be together

    Until the day we died"

Tom Waits is one of the best songwriters. Period.

  • 1920+ public speakeasy+ this song on the main stage= check my pulse, i think i'm in heaven

  • there are two versions of this song in this record, and i like the other one better.

  • he sounds drunk (not being rude!) does he or did he always sound this way? or is it just this song

  • @TheBeatlesluvdaisy I think it's pretty much intended, Waits always sounds abit slurred when he sings, hehe.

  • who's dont like this?

  • si video es una basca pues este es mirda de perro

  • I like this song to much, is amazing

  • The one man who can bring tears to another's eyes

  • Hey,

could somebody pls tell me what the message of the song is and whether to respond to any problems (political or something like this)?

need information for a lecture about this song and i am no native english speaker

    thanks

  • @paddymusic Doubt it's political at all. It's a song about expectations, promises, missing the mark, hurting others, innocence in one's own mind. Another great Tom Waits song about being a common jerk.

  • First song I ever heard of him, fell in love instantly and now he's my Everything.

  • Tom Waits is just, freagin' awesome. I started listening to him at about age 13, and now i'm in my late teens, and still listening to it. It helps ease my pain when i'm sad about a rejection or something, makes me even happier if i'm joyful. His music is great for every occasion. I am very thankful to God that Tom's here.

So many people just don't understand him. 11/10

  • @Sniperhound4 my uncle introduced me to tom's song at the same age though i am still kinda young, just turned 15

  • its memories that i'm stealing, but youre innocent when you dream

  • perfect

  • I only found this wonderful song the other day, thanks to Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Show. I'm certainly glad I found it. This song will be timeless.

  • what movie was this song in around 92?

  • This Song was in the movie 'Smoke' by Wayne Wang, based on a short story by Paul Auster. Great movie, great song! Though the movie version is even better...

  • what movie was this in the 90's?

  • @jnicoise

    "Blue in the face".

  • Anyone that loves Tom Waits has the worlds best music understanding! Yes, this means you!

  • Thanks: I love reveling in Narcissism--Narcissism by Proxy. Please keep telling me I'm awesome for liking everything T. Waits has done. And um I love Luis Bunuel, mushrooms in olive oil, + watching TV trivia, sullenly muttering "Those prizes are rightfully mine!" + I enjoy my cursed self-pity. + I love Marc Chagall and picturing somewhere, once, the Hills WERE upside down. If you say this's ALL SO cool, then I'll think YOU'RE SO cool--for that, you can praise me again. +I love lunatic rambling.

  • I LOVE Tom Waits....he sounds like Popeye after a stroke! LOL

  • Hey Guys we would love your opinion on us man, we love Tom and are really influened by him,, he is a legend !!!!! so if you are listening to this you have taste!!"

  • @Gingerarse100 Here,here!!! Cheers!

  • @Gingerarse100 you'd be surprised how many people hate my taste...when I bring out Tom..I can empty the house...which can be handy

  • @Rudis66 it sucks though sometimes not being able to talk about your favorite music with your favorite friends.

  • @Rudis66 tastless whores, the lot of them, just stick a christmas jingle on and watch them drool in the corner, Cunts

  • @Rudis66 This comment is the best on youtube.

  • @Gingerarse100 My freinds alaways thought I didnt, thanks for proveing them wrong. :D

  • Other Tom Waits' songs I recommend:

    Cold Cold Ground

    Georgia Lee

    Tom Traubert's Blues

    On the Nickel

    I Don't Wanna Grow up

    Rain Dogs

Well I recommend most of Tom Waits' music but those are some of my favorites and would serve as a good introduction to Waits I believe.

  • And CHOCOLATE JESUS?

  • Saw him yesterday! Played this just him on the piano with an upright bassist. Magic.

  • he performed this when i saw him a couple days ago in Milan, italy. man, its different live but just as amazing.
