This is beautiful. A beautiful old bar-room ballad, the likes of which you never hear anymore. We used to drown our sorrows in ale and song in a sort of grim camaraderie, now we drown our inhibitions in a frenzy of indulgence and excess. The music reflects this. These days it's what moves your body, back then it was about what moved your heart. I can't say it was better or worse, but it was certainly different.
Elvis Costello does an incredible version of this on his Kojak Variety album.. I really must get around to uploading that entire album, not much at all here anywhere.
I'm ashamed of my generation and the ones after me. When will good music become mainstream? Will it ever happen? Will greed ALWAYS be more powerful then wanting to support amazing music? I'm losing faith in humanity.
Part 1 : Maybe your faith in humanity is shallow to begin with? When i read comment like "I'm ashamed of my generation," i can't help wonder if you're not simply using your taste in music as an excuse to revere in your own version of awesomeness (which is alright, but while spit on an entire generation, you go even as far as to predict doom for future generations?)
@Pianomantodd1 Part 2: It's not like greed or shitty music are newly released concepts.
When do you even get time for (contemptuous) shame, isn't life so short as it is? It's not like you owe the god of shame a debt, that if you don't fill your quota of daily shame he'll send some dudes to rough you up.
If your neighbor is jamming on some god awful shite that churns your stomack, it's not necessary to go ahead and puke on the sole of his feet to mark your disgust.
@Pianomantodd1 Part 3: With that kind of mindset, we'll all be stuck in a merry go round puke fest because I have to admit I've watched some bad b-movies, especially scifi that nobody should ever watch or enjoy as they actively kill brain cells. I still have to take supplements to compensate for the loss, haha. I'm not writing to be all judgy, I haven't got the qualifications, I am simply sharing my opinion.
@Pianomantodd1 Part 4: In one of my favorite writings by Bob Dylan,"Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie" there is a bit about self introspection (A small excerpt:
"In this ocean of hours I'm all the time drinkin'
Who am I helping, what am I breaking
What am I giving, what am I taking")
Read the whole thing if you get a chance, sorry my comments ended up being super long
For this generation's taste in music? You shouldn't be. Do you know what single was the UK and US no. 1 when this album was released? Neither do I. But I bet it was shit. Popular affinity for bunk music is as timeless as it gets. Thank the lord for guys like Tommy Waits.
This song takes me so far away from reality when I listen to it. Tom Waits is great to listen to on lonely nights, hell he's great to listen to whenever.
In the wee hours of the 1970s Tom played a club in San Diego. I'd read his ads but was too young to go. Then we saw Zappa's Overnite Sensation show: Tom was the supporting act! We assumed Tom was another of Zappa's crazy projects. Here's a sot with more talent than you could drink singing like he's in a smokey dive -- accompanied by the clinking of two guys in the back kicking an empty bottle of Mad Dawg back and forth on the cement floor. Perfect! Was it part of the act? May we never find out!
I saw Tom live in the '70's because I'd heard The Nickel Over There on the wireless (!), and loved his music since. His poignant songs speak volumes to me as I age along with him. I like Frank's Wild Years best.
I like the idea of a sleep playlist, but I'd get sick of the couch.
He really is... He really is wonderful. I don't know what else to say. He has been a big influence on me and if I ever met him, I would love to shake his hand. A writer, Thomas Muldoon, pays homage to him in his new book: Smoking in Bathrooms. It is a fun read.
Just about everyone thinks I'm effing crazy for liking Tom Waits. Parents included. They pretend they aren't creeped out by his voice but I can see the hatred and disgust in their slightly furrowed brows and tight upper lips.
@paddymusic Doubt it's political at all. It's a song about expectations, promises, missing the mark, hurting others, innocence in one's own mind. Another great Tom Waits song about being a common jerk.
Tom Waits is just, freagin' awesome. I started listening to him at about age 13, and now i'm in my late teens, and still listening to it. It helps ease my pain when i'm sad about a rejection or something, makes me even happier if i'm joyful. His music is great for every occasion. I am very thankful to God that Tom's here.
I only found this wonderful song the other day, thanks to Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Show. I'm certainly glad I found it. This song will be timeless.
This Song was in the movie 'Smoke' by Wayne Wang, based on a short story by Paul Auster. Great movie, great song! Though the movie version is even better...
Thanks: I love reveling in Narcissism--Narcissism by Proxy. Please keep telling me I'm awesome for liking everything T. Waits has done. And um I love Luis Bunuel, mushrooms in olive oil, + watching TV trivia, sullenly muttering "Those prizes are rightfully mine!" + I enjoy my cursed self-pity. + I love Marc Chagall and picturing somewhere, once, the Hills WERE upside down. If you say this's ALL SO cool, then I'll think YOU'RE SO cool--for that, you can praise me again. +I love lunatic rambling.

chocolate jesus is so awesome. so is cold water , or tango till they're sore, or anywhere i lay my head, gun street girl, a good man is hard to find, list goes on so fukin long haven't listened to all the CDs yet
@JBHutto I can't help but notice that Lonely, Grapefruit Moon, Closing Time, Putnam County, Jitterbug Boy, Invitation to the Blues, Kentucky Avenue, Shore Leave, Town with No Cheer, In The Neighborhood, Soldier's Things, Rainbirds, Downtown Train, Anywhere I Lay My Head, Frank's Theme, Train Song, Who Are You, That Feel, Pony, Take It With Me and Woe are conspicuously absent.
i only got into waits about 1/2 year ago. i heard "a little rain" on xm radio a few years ago and downloaded "bone machine". then i got "mule variations". i use a playlist to goto sleep, but its all glenn gould selections.
Great great song.... =)

Other Tom Waits' songs I recommend:
Cold Cold Ground
Georgia Lee
Tom Traubert's Blues
On the Nickel
I Don't Wanna Grow up
Rain Dogs
Well I recommend most of Tom Waits' music but those are some of my favorites and would serve as a good introduction to Waits I believe.
