It's such a privilege to hear singing of this quality. The pitch accuracy is absolutely phenomenal from the whole team; this is a pretty serious set of changes and they nail it 100%. Rock-solid time, lovely blend, great range of sounds... And the arrangements improve on the originals. And the performance is witty and entertaining. And - they are students!! Are you llistening, Pitch Slapped??
I think Shawn and Sara got lost on the part when Afro-blue was transitioning into the "When I think of You" song. I think they were paying more attention to christie's scat rather than reggie's bass. The first time you listen, your like huh? but listening for the second time your like "Oh, that was HOT!!!" IMO, this group had the best performance for the medleys. Reggie was really ON POINT! If your still lost, that means that you don't have a good ear for music. Tune up your ear drums!!! Lol...
I think Afro-Blue is tremendously talented. I think they've adapted so well to the different styles they've been asked to arrange outside their comfort zone. They take me back to Manhattan Transfer.
I'm a fan of this group, but I must admit that I didn't care for this performance that much. The strongest singers in the group didn't really sing much. Danielle is always great; she's got stage presence. Other than her little part, I didn't like it. But I'm still one percent behind them.
...Jazz is complex and rich by nature. What the judges meant to say was that their sound is too intelligent for mainstream America. They disappoint me in their lack of understanding and appreciation of good vocal jazz. Afro Blue's stylings are so smooth, they sound like rich dark chocolate and a warm fuzzy sweater...for my ears. Clearly, some judges need to be schooled.
The things is: Afro Blue cannot win because they have absolutely nothing to learn from this show. They are musical geniuses, and their arrangements and execution are so tight and flawless, they put every other group to shame. The judges should fall down and worship at their feet. But America (the effing birthplace of jazz) doesn't understand jazz because their brains have become complacent with simple-minded pop songs with juvenile lyrics sporting laughable metaphors with formulaic arrangements
For the first two seasons, the judges rewarded groups that pushed the envelope, and I think Nota and Committed were easily the two groups that advanced the genre during their own seasons. Now, they seem to be rewarding people for well executed, but predictable and safe choices. Dartmouth Aires got judge-worshipped this week for note-for-note covers of Queen, but Afro Blue gets criticized for being too progressive. And Sara seems to be more taken by "energy" than musicality.
The white judges cannot comprehend this style of music, is over their heads. especially that white chick. I don't like the song selection, they still rocked, but the producers will have to give them songs to showcase their talent. they are too advanced for the judges. The need an experienced muscian up there like Alicia keys or Gaga. They hae to dumb it down for the judges. Just my opinion
I was ready to slap the judges. This performance was amazing, intricate harmonies are what they are known for and they have a signature sound and style that makes them stand out. I completely disagree that they "overthink" their performances. Anyone who can't appreciate their talent needs to just get out.....just get out!
I like Janet and I like AfroBlue but their medley was lack luster. I wonder why they didn't choose Rhianna or Alicia. Better yet, how could they do a Janet medley without including "Thats the Way Love Goes?" Anyway, glad they're still in the running. Next week should be better.
@artsygg Janet is the icon that taught Rhianna and Alicia. Why would they pay homage to the students when they know the real respect goes to the teacher?
@Five6Sevenand8 Hey, I'm not challenging Janet"s Icon status! Bottomline, I want to see AfroBlue make it to the finals and possibly win this thing. Last week was a little iffy. Last night they were in the bottom 2. How is that possible? Maybe it's related to song choice. Last wk their competitors were given slightly more current songs by Alicia & Rhianna, which AfroBlue would have nailed. Nevertheless, the judges seem to "penalize" them for being too harmonically complex, which is ridiculous.
I'm so disappointed in Shawn... I really thought if anyone, HE'D be able to see the genius in this. But oh well- regardless: this performance was GENIUS! forget the judges if they couldn't see that...
I love these guys!! Don't listen to those judges. The other groups cannot afford to take risk like you guys. You have your own style and you are the total package. Stay true to yourself Afro Blue. We have already purchased and downloaded every song that you have performed. You are true musician, singers, and dancers. If you don't win this contes--Oh well - Remember the Alamo, Remember Jennifer Hudson!
I absolutely love this group!!! It pains me to see how much disdain people have for this group. I think only people who truly understand musicianship understand the dynamics and pure genious of Afro Blue. There chords are seamless. I hate when the judges critiques consist of telling them to "dumb down" there style. Judging based on creativity and technique, I see only Pentatonix being on their level.
These guys really need to hit on some mainstream songs otherwise they can't win this, they have to remember the public taste is in general mediocre they need some kanye stuff, gaga and Beyonce's hits. That's what the uneducated masses cry out for...
@Angrybirds0506 I believe you are absolutely right. I wasn't disappointed in Afro Blue as much as I was disappointed in their song selection. They need more current hits to stay alive. That Kanye West American Boy was so sick. Janet was great in her day but the songs were so dated that the crowd couldn't get into the energy of the song. I'm really pulling for Afro-Blue!!!
@RDY4WAR YOu are telling the truth! I don't think they had a choice, they had to pick from a song list. The white girl judge is not that good, listen to her responses, She does not understand music like this. During their Witney Houston's selction she said that they were sharp at the end. i played the video over 4 times and they were not sharp. What she heard was some complicated Harmonies and could not comprehend.
@Angrybirds0506 Sadly you are VERY right. I would go so far as to say that the people that know "real" music are generally not the ones calling or texting in to vote (self included). I was SHOCKED to hear the judges comments. I love a new member of this group every week. This week the brother with the dreads stole the show. He held down two of the yound ladies during their lead and he deserved a HUGE shout out!
Danielle completely channeled Janet!!! It was great, especially "Miss You Much." "That's the end?" Lol that was cute and exactly what I was thinking. Proud Bison loving AfroBlue.
Love the 80s ones.
