from Sheba's owner: One thing we have in our area is "hard water", so she has had calcium stains on her shell her whole life. Occasionally her shell peels, and her shell really is healthy underneath.
can you please tell me how you have your red eared slider to be so loyal and fond to you? mine is really scared of me and I always dream of Bruce Following me around the house
@Cyndrakkos You don't let a turtle loose in the house all the time like a dog. You give them a tank or a pond and you can let them free in the house sometimes.
my res came to me. i was running out to class and when i opened my front door she was about 4 feet away. i live in a california suburb, so this type of thing is pretty uncommon. she was kidna banged up and dehydrated looking. i took her to the local petsmart and they didnt think she would make it. turns out they were wrong. weird thing is that 3 days prior my 23 year old cat passed away.
dude that shell is freaky lookin! lol. but that turtle is cool! mine is smart too. i have a giant tank and she once climbed out oftank and used the filter to climb and the wall. it was crazy. shes huge! well not HUGE but the size of a dinner plate. lol.
Thanks! That's really nice of you to say. :) Sheba has been in my life so long that I can't imagine life without her being there. A turtle is a life-long commitment! :)
She gets plenty of love & attention. Sheba is a member of my family. And since I am allergic to dogs & cats, she makes the perfect pet for me. :) And I don't think of her as an "it" especially since I have confirmed that Sheba is (in fact) a girl. :)
@industrialg I never said it didn't get love and attention just because you talked to it like a dog. I have a dog, and just because I address him as such doesn't mean I don't love my pet. But I'm saying there's a difference between your turtle displaying the behaviors of a dog, and you just calling it like a dog. And to me, I only see the later one in this video.
That's awesome! So happy to hear stories like yours, about turtle owners who just keep them forever. Do your turtles follow you around too? Do you let them walk? I love being able to let Sheba out. She's so strong & big that I never worry about her getting lost in the house or in trouble.
Yep i let them walk in the house a bit for workout. Sadly i keep them separated because they will kill each other if i put them together.
They are male and female so i don't know why they try to kill each other, the male started bitting since 2001 (the female almost lost 1 eye in the night and the face, legs and tail was cut and bruised). I was lucky that she din't lose her eye that time, after a couple of days (out of the water with some medical lotion i put in her) she opened the eye again.
I know how you feel! I used to have 2 turtles as well and all they did was fight so I gave away the male and kept Sheba. The fighting was so bad between the 2 that they needed to be separated almost all the time. It was terrible. :\
Thanks for viewing! Sheba was always this friendly. I got her when she was 6 inches long & the person who had her before me took great care of her and she was obviously loved. Her personality was wonderful right from the start. :)
I hear ya! The longer you have them, the more domesticated they become. And I have noticed that she doesn't like everyone....the people who she doesn't like have always been shady people who I should avoid (lots of stories there). Weird how a reptile can pick up personalities of people like that.
I hope so I really like my turtles and knew I would be making a huge commitment getting them. That is weird. I have heard about dogs doing that but not turtle.
That's true that dogs do that too. I have been around Sheba for so long that I see her body language. Some people she just doesn't care about. Others she can't stand. Then there are the ones she REALLY likes: it's like she is trying to crawl out of her shell to get to them, looks at them really intently & sticks her neck WAAAAY out to get a better look. It's really cute.
check out my favorite turtle talk forum: readearslider (dot) com. Sorry I had to type the web address like that, but youtube doesn't let you post web addy's on here. Check out the forum, you will love it. the people on there are really knowledgeable about turtles & when I need help, I go there too. :)
u shoul've seen the shell of my turtle when i found it on my backyard....it took a while until it got back to its normal color. btw i always wondered who was the fk that wanted it get drived by
vita shell really isn't that good for the shell because it doesn't allow the shell to breathe. FYI - she HAS a UVA/UVB bulb. I bought the $60 bulb that provides both forms of light. The problem is the water around here is hard water which always stains her shell white. There is nothing I can do but wait for her to shed.
I have had Sheba for 19 yrs, but I don't know how old she really is. She lives in a 90-gallon tank that has a UVA/UVB light, platform for her to get out of the water & sit under the light, Stealth water heater, and a big plastic tree root in the water that she likes to sleep on. RES must live in water. They only get out of the water to sit under the sun & warm up. :)
yeah thats what i thought, but in this video you put her out though, how long did you take her out for and how can i train my turtle to listen to me like that
FYI - a turtle that is as old as Sheba gets saggy regardless of "weight", especially after they lay eggs since the eggs take up a HUGE amount of space in the abdomen & there isn't any other place for the flesh to go. :) Sheba has laid up to 11 eggs in a clutch. Each one is almost an inch long.....
If u buy one from a good turtle owner and not from a mall or pond they will not have samonella. But turtles are not a very easy pet so dont get one if u have not done reaserch they are very expencive and require very large tanks when they are full grown. my tank is 209 gallons (if u wana see it i have video of it on my channel)
just wondering, i heard of a desiese called soft shell, i dont want my red eared slider to get it, is there any way of stopping it from happening? someone reply please.
No. the shell is stained from all the calcium in the water ("hard water"). This is a condition that is not harmful for the turtle & the stained scutes eventually peel off.
Okay, i got it, i know what ya mean... okay thanks for the info. I got 2 yellow bellies myself and 1 Yellow eared slider, their awesome animals, just like your turtle.
That is so cool. I want a turtle haha. I'm looking at red ear sliders and eastern something or another species with yellow markings. Both seem to be good beginning turtles and friendly.
Turtle's and Tortoise's are wonderful pets to have, I only have 1 water turtle, spent 1,000$ trying to get her healthy again, and our Spur tortoise charges the door when he sees me coming with his breakfast ^_^, you are so lucky, none of my turtles act like that other then the big guy for breakfast.
I can keep her out of the tank for up to 8 hours. The only reason I say "8 hours" is because I see the turtles on lakes who sit on logs & they are out of the water for about 8 hours. Most of the time, I only leave Sheba out for about 4 hours though because I don't like to leave her alone too long.

aws thats cute. I've had my turtles for 3years they are getting way bigger becuz they shell is starting to kinda shed and my vet told me thats a sign of them getting mature and my turtles dont come to me =[ unless they want food xD but i have a boy and a girl and they are doing the mating ritual least once every 3weeks wish me luck on having hatchlings :D
2 quick questions...what's wrong with her carapace? it's very odd looking, definitely not normal...2 - how old is she? the second may answer the first
In that vid, she had a lot of hard water stains on her shell. "hard water" means there is a lot of calcium & other minerals in the water & can stain the shell. The high calcium is good for her when she drinks the water, just has a tendency to make the shell gray. Since this vid was taken, she has shed all that gray & looks much better. Sheba is approx. 20 yrs old (I've had her for 18 yrs).
I don't think I really "tried" to train her, she just started doing it. I feed her in a separate pan of water to keep her aquarium more clean & I guess she just got used to being out of the tank because every time she was, I would be feeding her. I would never try to "train" a turtle that is little though. They are too scared when they are outside of their tank home.
After a while, a layer of shell will peel off & the shell will be fresh & pretty underneath. If you have hard water in your house, it will stain their shell (because of all the calcium in the water) & there isn't much you can do about it. It's not harmful for them to have these stains though. :)
Those are hard-water stains from all the calcium in the water. The good news is that her shell has peeled ever since I took those videos & now she is pretty & brown again, no white spots!
sheba's 22 yrs old? that's how old i am! (is she single? ;)

It depends what the turtle feels like before it bites. Most turtles don't bite but don't take that as a fact!

how do you train her??
nailahalilic1 4 years ago
I don't think I really "tried" to train her, she just started doing it. I feed her in a separate pan of water to keep her aquarium more clean & I guess she just got used to being out of the tank because every time she was, I would be feeding her. I would never try to "train" a turtle that is little though. They are too scared when they are outside of their tank home.

how did you get rid of the hard water stains? ...now my turtle has them :[
daniellelynn2 4 years ago
After a while, a layer of shell will peel off & the shell will be fresh & pretty underneath. If you have hard water in your house, it will stain their shell (because of all the calcium in the water) & there isn't much you can do about it. It's not harmful for them to have these stains though. :)

thank you soo much! :)

She's really cute, its great she's so comfortable with you!
What is the discoloration on her shell?
pushpanjali 4 years ago
Those are hard-water stains from all the calcium in the water. The good news is that her shell has peeled ever since I took those videos & now she is pretty & brown again, no white spots!
