I don't give a fuck what the Mall Ninjas say about how much better the 5.45 is in "Tumbling" Or "Fragmenting" Or whatever. I can get any kind of well designed hollowpoint bullets I want in 5.56. They WILL expand, & fragment, Unlike the FMJ 5.45 or even 5.56 FMJ. I've seen the gel test, done on "Tactical Arms" Neither 5.45, & 5.56 in FMJ reliably frag. They both bend in the middle & tumble. Similar performance. Until you bring in the better ammo selection of the 5.56, & that ain't an opinion.
@FiveTwoSevenTHR the 5.56 fragmentation characteristics is only relevant if you are using the 20 inch barrel that the round was designed to use...when you make the barrel shorter (16 inch, 10 inch, 8 inch etc) the fragmentation of the round drops off drastically thus reducing round lethalaity, the 5.54 on the other hand tumbles and maintains its lethalality out of any length of barrel.
If the ballistics of the 5.45x39 are WAY better how come these fags are not winning camp perry matches with AK74s then? Come on "it's WAY better" so that must be a HUGE advantage. At 3000 meters it's WAY better than a .50 BMG. lol
The 5.56 fragments are as devastating ! The 5.45 tumbles way more, is more acurate, and doesn't have nearly as much recoil... overall an all around better round.
@AssassinSteven True the 5.56 fragmenting is devastating, but in all the rifles I shot and testing I have done I never found the 5.45 to tumble any more, be more accurate, or have less recoil than 5.56. Dont believe everything you hear. There is much miss information and propaganda out there. Test for yourself to come up with the truth. Both are fine rounds
@FireControlGroup I often hear that. I wonder how could it be true though. I think military loadings of the 5.56x45 and 5.45x39 being shot of the same barrel length have roughly the same speed and grains.
@esh325 Your correct, Military loading of 5.45 and 5.56 are almost dead even. In my testing in same barrel length 5.56 Nato 55g was only 34fps faster than 53gr 5.45. That equals zero difference. Any difference in these rounds are in bullets used not cartridge. Dont let andy of these so called experts tell you otherwise, its untrue.
@jetfuel545 I think it's the muzzle brake is the only thing that makes the difference in recoil. I bet if you fired both round out of the same exact rifle with no muzzle brake, there probably wouldn't be any difference.
@esh325 I agree with respect to Military cartridge of similar bullet weight recoil impulse difference would not be noticeable to the shooter. Any noted difference is with the rifles. The Ar has the advantage of straight line recoil and the AK has the advantage with highly effective muzzle brake. Shooting rifles of same weight I would not rate ones more controllable than the other.
@RFXCGZZ Ive seen them. There is no large improvement. In fact when 5.56 fragments its much more devastating, and they both yaw equally well. Both are good cartridges but stop believing myth of the poison bullet, as that is all it is.
@jetfuel545 love the video but after firing both rounds of both guns I find the 5.45 to be slightly supperior to the 5.56 and yes the 5.45 does tumple, why else whould it be called the posion round, and no I am not a internate expert
@cricket007352 I'm not an expert either, but I can tell you that tumbling is nothing special. All military rifle rounds have tendency to tumble or yaw in flesh.
@SuperFinnish The AK in his video is a Romanian SAR-2 or CUR-2. Romania retained the 45-degree gas block casting from the AKM on their version of the AK-74.
@TheMedievalMan The front is original, the real original was a thumbhole, I replaced and refinished a Romanian AKM stock and cut the 74 lightning cuts myself. Its all Romanian Laminate wood. Original finish is shellac and that is what I used for the buttstock too. Amber color.
@jetfuel545 I bought a can of Amber Shellac, and I am going to do my Bulgarian furniture that same color. I am removing the cosmoline from my wood set using steam.
@jetfuel545 Hey, I am almost done with my converted Saiga. I put several coats of Amber Shellac on mine, and its coming out nicely. All I have to do is wait for my lower hand guard retainer, and file a notch on my barrel. Then its all done, its coming out a lot like yours.
@jetfuel545 Did you put any kind of clear protective coat over your shellac? Or did you just leave it like that? I put 3-4 coats on my wood, and its nice and dry. Also did you use a bristle brush, or a foam brush? I notice the bristles leave brush marks when you look very closely, or maybe I am just being picky. It did come out nice, I only need to file my notch, and I got it all done.
@TheMedievalMan No over coat. I just used the shellac. I tried both the bristle brush which was recommended and the foam brush. I had the same problem with the bristle brush. If you just make one pass, and put a fairly heavy coat on you dont get the bristle marks, but it is hard to get the hang of. The foam brush worked well for me but i needed twice the amount of coats. The shellac will not fully harden for several weeks and will be susceptible to damage.
In an interview, Mike Kalashnikov said he was sure the Soviets would have been better off modernizing the 7.62x39 than switching to 5.45x39. Anyone know the reasons he believed this? Anyone know what he meant by modernizing?
@huguenot67 I've heard this interview also. I don't know really know what his ideas of modernizing would have been. Spetsnaz still uses 7.62x39, so it must have merits over the 5.45x39. I think some non front line units also use the 7.62x39. So the Russians never completely moved away from the 7.62x39, just like the Americans never moved from the .308.
@SpencerAK74M Where did you find out that MK wasn't on the AK74 design team? Everything I've read lists him as the designer. I'd like to read more about it. From what I read about MK, he is quite patriotic so I'm surprised to hear that he would denigrate a weapon he believed to be superior because he didn't design it. Please point me toward your sources so that I may read more. Thanks.
@huguenot67 He is a very patriotic individual. When the AK74 was designed he was in charge of the Kalashnikov design team, but he let the engineers under him do the majority of the work. Like you said he was happy with his 7.62x39 rifle and didnt want to switch. As for the modernization that you asked about, look at the AKs of today coming out of the Ishvesk factory.... Those are the standard upgrades he probably thought of.
@SpencerAK74M Kalashnikov said that full capacity of 7.62x39 was not yet utilised. Better-quality ammo, stiffer barrel, balanced gas system have lifted the full-auto accuracy a lot. AEK-973 its called :) Although not designed by MTK it made 7.62x39 round equally accurate and controllable to 5.45x39
enjoy you making the argument for the AK-74, from the magazine curve I can tell a 47 from a 74, seeing the news reports I watch carefully and it's rarely an AK-74, even with the much lower cost of ammo and other features you mentioned they still vote with their money and choose the AK-47, confusing
@Freedom100fan Well outside of Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and the Ukraine you just dont see them as much.... 100 million AKs out there and 75 million of those are standard 7.62x39 variants :)
@SpencerAK74M The Romanian laminate is in beautiful shape. I like the Russian laminate best. The Romanians were real brains staying with the 45 degree gas block, or something like that. Retro sounds good, lol

the 5.45 has less chamber pressure thus less range, meaning less accuracy at the longer distances, but overall its a nasty round
Vettejocke 2 months ago
@Vettejocke and yet neither should be used as long distance rounds, they are intended for 0-300m.
FireControlGroup 1 month ago
@Vettejocke Having less chamber pressures has nothing to do with accuracy. It means the cartridge design is more efficient
