I love your White P bass with the maple neck. Does Fender make anything similar from Japan? I know they have a 70's RI, but it's not really accurate..
Remember alot of a basses tone can be altered by a GOOD bassplayer, meaning a better player can coax better tones from a lower quality bass,Mowtown has a story that goes like this"a bassplayer was doing studio work and the p-bass being used had terrible intonation and nothing could hide it,Jamerson was nextdoor drinking and was asked to play the part but his bass was'nt with him,he took the "intonation troubled" bass and layed the hook. Theres more than just snazzy finishes that make a bass.
@cottonfever1221 How will the neck hold out as it ages, are the frets all even ETC..These are some of the things that dont get talked about,DONT KID YOURSELF OR ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE BULLCRAPPED INTO BELIEVING THESE ARE MADE AS WELL AS THE JAPANESE MODELS. They dont use the same quality wood nor is it pre aged, the finish is thick and the natural wood tone gets muddled, they are heavy cuts of wood, the fretwork is marginal at best and the pickups are'nt close to the Jap quality, research yourself!
I'd take the Squier Jazz LAST over all of them...sounds too damn tinny! I'd love that custom shop Jazz though, and that Squier 50's P sounds BLOODY CLOSE to the Fender!!!
Did anyone else think that the squire 60s CV p bass sounded better than the 1988 jap p bass? or does it just sound better to me because i have the squire?
I'm a beginner bass player and my music is reggae. If I don't hear that deep mellow sound of the roots reggae, I get bored to tears and don't practice. I play neck, can play with thumb but prefer 2 finger, shut highs/treble on amp and bass, use flats. I have a cort c4h, nice allrounder for beginners, but now I want a fender or squire jazz. CV looks great! standard, american standard, american special, what is the difference and which one would you choose for deep mellow roots reggae sound??
@apaija - All the Jazz basses will have close to the same basic tone, so they would all be suitable for reggae - Robbie Shakespeare agrees. However, Squier, Standard, AM Standard, Special... all different versions of the same thing, just more expensive. Better woods, better pickups, better build quality, better instrument. That's the difference. They can all work for reggae, it just depends on how much you can spend.
I just made up my mind about getting on of the Squier Classic Vibe's 50's P-bass. However, they now come in Butterscotch Blonde with Pine as tonewood instead of Basswood (Along with brass bridge saddles I believe); do you think these 2 elements would be enough to change the sound of it?
I have played the blue (Basswood) one on several visits to music stores and I love it, but the butterscotch translucent finish is really eye-catching! Thank you for any input everyone!
@REMLostmyreligion _ Yeah, I'd probably upgrade. The Affinity series is rock bottom in the Squiers. Not a bad starter bass, but not something you would play forever. I'd look at the Fender Standard series. If you're in the US, check out Bass Emporium, they're having a big sale on those. I don't know if they ship overseas, but you could check.
Yesterday, I bought a Squier Jazz Bass VIntage Modified and a Ampeg BA 108 Amp. Just simple, but it sounds great! And I've got some money left to upgrade. :) The Fender Jazz Bass started around 700$ which was too expensive for me.
@REMLostmyreligion So close in sound (the C VIbe) surprising that they got the sound on such a lesser expensive guitar as well as they did. Fender might be shooting themselves in the foot building to the quality they do with the C Vibes compared to the much higher cost of an American made Fender.
Thanks for the excellent review. For my money the classic vibe series is the way to go. The slight sound difference between the squier and fender guitars would be completely unnoticed by any audience. I recently toured Poland with an Affinity Squier bass and it worked as well as any of my expensive basses. The instrument's real mojo is the skill of the player. Not the price. It's just two slabs of wood bolted together.
I like the Squier classic vibe series. They sound great and I like how the Basswood bodies help the tone to have nice mids but still have the nice low end and cut thru. Lot of bass for the buck.
@destroyuall1988 - "Better" is really a personal choice. They are both built the same, the pickup is different, the neck is bigger on the 50s. I think the 60s is a little more versatile, plus it's a humbucker, so you don't get hum.

Just listening through crappy laptop speakers with fans going on, all the Fenders seem to be noticeably louder in all settings and brighter than the Squiers. Still, a killer comparison :)
hey, thanks! i went tO guitar center a few days ago and bought a used fender 51 ri p bass in blonde and love it. it was hard to not go the easy way out and spend less on a squire, but i did it. i think the pickup in the one i bought was changed before it was brought in, because it sounds different than most im hearing.also,im pretty sure someonne set it up.the only problem is, they have to check if it was stolen, so i cant bring it home for two weeks
Hi there, Ed! Great review, but I have a question about the groove you're playing on P-60s and J-bass - did you do it on some of your DVDs or in some books of yours? Thanks :D
A while back I got a Squier Affinity sss Strat for about $200 and I dropped a Seymour Duncan in it the bridge position and I fell in love. Very recently I bought a Squier Jbass it's pretty good for the price point, as far as upgrading the pickups without breaking my bank account what would you suggest. Thank you for all the videos.
@byjuu246 - It could be the string, or the bass. You can change the string.... and only a few things about the bass. I can't diagnose your problem online. But try other strings, if that doesn't solve it, it's your bass. Maybe a new bridge might help... but if it's a cheap instrument... just get a new bass!
Mr. Ed greetings from Venezuela, I like the P single-coil, apart from the quality control between the Japanese and the Chinese model, do you consider the sound is identical to that of both, in particular noticed that the Japanese is brighter I hope your answer
@juniormendoza80 - Well, in this case the Japanese bass was brighter because I had just put a fresh set of roundwounds on it. I usually have flats on that bass, but to compare it with the Squier I put rounds on it, but they were newer. But... that may only be part of it. The Squier sounds pretty much like the Japanese bass, very close.
Great Video! I am looking for a backup bass (I have a fender MIM J Bass). In your opinion would I be better off with a Squire Bass or similarly priced Ibanez?
Squier P 60s kicks ass! The jazz models do sound diff. I personally tried every model of the squier's and the j bass one seems to lack that midrange, resulting in a thinner tone. The 60s p is my weapon of choice, got nice fat tone, a unique dimensioned neck 0.025" wider at nut but thinner as a neck feel goes = very comfy. 50s p sounds great too but is more of a big band type of sound, very boomy, less high end.
The tone on the Fenders were much more fuller and bassier than the Squiers... but the Squiers were brighter and clearer... I liked them both, hahhaha.
hey man, I really like those tele looking p basses, and I have noticed that they're kinda hard to find now, but I was wondering if these classic vibe 50's p's are more versatile than the fender anniversary reissue, squier vintage modified tele, or fender signature models(like mike dirnt and sting)? people take one look and say"one pickup-no versatility: dont buy it" is that true?
@bassharmonica1 - They are no more versatile than any of the other basses you mentioned. All standard P basses have one pickup, the Dirnt has the split coil. They are limited, but you can get lots of different sounds using your hands, amp eq, etc. People say a lot of stupid shit.
los bajos SQUIER son muy pero muy buenos siempre y cuando sean las series standard (que en mi opinion son superiores alas afinity) un precio muy accesible y una calidad bastante buena .... aunque son un poco pesados
@snuhjuh I was looking for a knock around bass that I wouldn't be worried to bring in to seedy clubs. I was torn between Squier and Mexi Fender myself as well. I ended up going with the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. I've not regretted it for an instant. I've yet to find a Mexican made Fender that plays as well as my Squier. So i'd say play around and find one that fits your hands well, whether that is the squier or the fender will really depend on you.
hi ed i had recently buy the cv jazz bass is very good bass very easy to play i am just considering to replace the pups with fender pick ups 60 jazz bass!do you think that is a good idea?it would add tone in this beautiful machine or its not worth to make this change?
@villis23 - Sure, it would certainly benefit from the upgrade. If you like the bass, it's worth it. Replace the volume and tone pots too, they're cheap.
thanks a lot ! i am pro player and i use this bass for practice an some rehearsals!ok i will make this change!
i have played with too many basses in may life i think that if someone want to take a real good jazz bass instument take a look at bacchus bass in the same price with fenders but i think there are better!the squiers are the best instruments you can find for a begginer and the most usefull for pros who want a 2 bass thats it!!so simple!haha have fun!!
@lidesnowi - They are not particularly heavy, maybe 9lbs or so. I believe it's basswood, not exactly the "good lightweight stuff" but workable. Don't expect miracles - these are $400 basses.
If you are a bass heretic, P's are very nice for pick playing... especially 70s, 60s real vintage ones. J's are fine for pick, but they really have become the slap basses.
Even if a P has a P-J pick configuration, a P still sounds like one. Mine is Japanese with changed pickups (EMG active P-J's) and it still has that imposing low.
Hi there bass whisperer and followers, first of all a big thank you for you uploads, very usefull stuff, i learned quite a bit from your vids, so thanks.
i am new with bass, been a guitarist all my life, and i was wondering on one thing for a long time:
why are there P basses? i mean, if a player likes the sound of a P bass, than he can always isolate the neck pickup on his jazz bass or P/J, while mantaining the advantage of using the bridge pickup from time to time (or not at all)...
The Jazz and Precision have two features that set them apart completely and thus account for their co-existence.
Firstly, the single coil neck p-up on the Jazz will never sound exactly like the split coil on the Precision. I own one of each and IMO the P has more punch and bottom-end while the J cuts through better. I love playing low droning notes on my P but when playing higher notes, the J sounds amazing. Also the slap sound on these two basses are even more different.
I personally feel the slap tone on the P is kinda muddy if your playing fast while on the J it's more articulate.
Secondly, the necks on these are completely different. The P has much wider neck. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and preference is personal. So, there you go.
@afzoomie67 - Sorry, I don't tab out my licks. I just don't have the time. But you should learn them yourself, use your ears. I already have a full length DVD on slap, it's called Slap Bass - published by Hal Leonard.
4:20 Squier beats fender on the Japanese p-bass 60's hands down!... the rest victories belong to Fender bass. I have both LOVE my Jazz Fender & Love my p-bass 60's Squier!!
LOL, Horrible vid for choosing a bass as they all shine in their strong areas! I will say that the sound quality of the vid was spot on! I was able to become further frustrated as a guitarist lookin to add a bass. Thanks, dude, great showcase vid!
Damn, that squier jazz just got owned!

@JellyDogNYC Your bass is better. I have both the 2010 american deluxe

and plays much better than the deluxe. (To think I spent 1600.00 + on the

My squire will be the perfect practice bass. Squire does a better job than

Proof, that it's all just a piece of wood and some electronics that cost pennies.

that Squire P bass is pretty legit
blueman912 6 months ago
gotta love the 60's p! btw another factor to the sound of the basses could be the strings?
newborn1o1 6 months ago in playlist Fancy "belly fiddles" n' such.
Sounds to me like the Squire 60s J sounded better than the MIJ Fender.

If a low B string has little
sustain, what might be
the problem, and can
it be fixed?
byjuu246 6 months ago
@byjuu246 - It could be the string, or the bass. You can change the string.... and only a few things about the bass. I can't diagnose your problem online. But try other strings, if that doesn't solve it, it's your bass. Maybe a new bridge might help... but if it's a cheap instrument... just get a new bass!
BassGuitarMag 6 months ago
@byjuu246 Thanks for the quick responce! My low B string is 110 because of
my small hands; but I will take it up a level like 125. The bass is the 2010 American deluxe
Jazz Bass V. Have you reviewed that bass yet?
byjuu246 6 months ago
Mr. Ed greetings from Venezuela, I like the P single-coil, apart from the quality control between the Japanese and the Chinese model, do you consider the sound is identical to that of both, in particular noticed that the Japanese is brighter I hope your answer
juniormendoza80 6 months ago
@juniormendoza80 - Well, in this case the Japanese bass was brighter because I had just put a fresh set of roundwounds on it. I usually have flats on that bass, but to compare it with the Squier I put rounds on it, but they were newer. But... that may only be part of it. The Squier sounds pretty much like the Japanese bass, very close.
BassGuitarMag 6 months ago
Great Video! I am looking for a backup bass (I have a fender MIM J Bass). In your opinion would I be better off with a Squire Bass or similarly priced Ibanez?
Jroneal72 6 months ago
Squier P 60s kicks ass! The jazz models do sound diff. I personally tried every model of the squier's and the j bass one seems to lack that midrange, resulting in a thinner tone. The 60s p is my weapon of choice, got nice fat tone, a unique dimensioned neck 0.025" wider at nut but thinner as a neck feel goes = very comfy. 50s p sounds great too but is more of a big band type of sound, very boomy, less high end.
syndrome666 6 months ago
The precisions sound close, especially the tele 50s one. The jazz sounds a fair bit thinner, though would probably do well with some improved pickups
krazyolie 7 months ago
The tone on the Fenders were much more fuller and bassier than the Squiers... but the Squiers were brighter and clearer... I liked them both, hahhaha.
XAlphaZEROX 7 months ago
For me, Squier JB sound was better comparing to Fender JB , when you were testing bridge pickup.
Gerdellos 7 months ago
hey man, I really like those tele looking p basses, and I have noticed that they're kinda hard to find now, but I was wondering if these classic vibe 50's p's are more versatile than the fender anniversary reissue, squier vintage modified tele, or fender signature models(like mike dirnt and sting)? people take one look and say"one pickup-no versatility: dont buy it" is that true?
bassharmonica1 7 months ago
@bassharmonica1 - They are no more versatile than any of the other basses you mentioned. All standard P basses have one pickup, the Dirnt has the split coil. They are limited, but you can get lots of different sounds using your hands, amp eq, etc. People say a lot of stupid shit.
BassGuitarMag 7 months ago 10
los bajos SQUIER son muy pero muy buenos siempre y cuando sean las series standard (que en mi opinion son superiores alas afinity) un precio muy accesible y una calidad bastante buena .... aunque son un poco pesados

Would I be better off getting a classic vibe bass, or one of the mexican made fenders?
snuhjuh 7 months ago
@snuhjuh - The Mexican Fenders are definitely a step up in quality. It just depends on if you want to spend $400 or $700.
BassGuitarMag 7 months ago
@BassGuitarMag Okay thanks! I'm a guitarist and just looking for a bass to muck around with. I think I'll go with the squiers :)
snuhjuh 7 months ago
@snuhjuh I was looking for a knock around bass that I wouldn't be worried to bring in to seedy clubs. I was torn between Squier and Mexi Fender myself as well. I ended up going with the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. I've not regretted it for an instant. I've yet to find a Mexican made Fender that plays as well as my Squier. So i'd say play around and find one that fits your hands well, whether that is the squier or the fender will really depend on you.

I can never get that nasty slap sound on my squier classic vibe '60 jazz bass!

squier 50's style p-bass sounded best of the first 5 then that fender jazz just blew em all away. ahaha

hi ed i had recently buy the cv jazz bass is very good bass very easy to play i am just considering to replace the pups with fender pick ups 60 jazz bass!do you think that is a good idea?it would add tone in this beautiful machine or its not worth to make this change?
villis23 7 months ago
@villis23 - Sure, it would certainly benefit from the upgrade. If you like the bass, it's worth it. Replace the volume and tone pots too, they're cheap.
BassGuitarMag 7 months ago
thanks a lot ! i am pro player and i use this bass for practice an some rehearsals!ok i will make this change!
i have played with too many basses in may life i think that if someone want to take a real good jazz bass instument take a look at bacchus bass in the same price with fenders but i think there are better!the squiers are the best instruments you can find for a begginer and the most usefull for pros who want a 2 bass thats it!!so simple!haha have fun!!

How much does those Squier Jazz Bass weigh, are they using the good light weight stuff ?
lidesnowi 8 months ago
@lidesnowi - They are not particularly heavy, maybe 9lbs or so. I believe it's basswood, not exactly the "good lightweight stuff" but workable. Don't expect miracles - these are $400 basses.

the only Fender that I preferred was the Jazz. In my opinion, the other Squiers were better than their Fender counterparts
slysendice 8 months ago
If you are a bass heretic, P's are very nice for pick playing... especially 70s, 60s real vintage ones. J's are fine for pick, but they really have become the slap basses.
Even if a P has a P-J pick configuration, a P still sounds like one. Mine is Japanese with changed pickups (EMG active P-J's) and it still has that imposing low.
GVike 8 months ago
Hi there bass whisperer and followers, first of all a big thank you for you uploads, very usefull stuff, i learned quite a bit from your vids, so thanks.
i am new with bass, been a guitarist all my life, and i was wondering on one thing for a long time:
why are there P basses? i mean, if a player likes the sound of a P bass, than he can always isolate the neck pickup on his jazz bass or P/J, while mantaining the advantage of using the bridge pickup from time to time (or not at all)...
TheNeighboursSon 8 months ago
@TheNeighboursSon
Hi.
Also the slap sound on these two basses are even more different.
sohamorrohit 8 months ago
@TheNeighboursSon
I personally feel the slap tone on the P is kinda muddy if your playing fast while on the J it's more articulate.
Secondly, the necks on these are completely different. The P has much wider neck. Both have their advantages and disadvantages and preference is personal. So, there you go.
sohamorrohit 8 months ago
I have the lake placid blue one (classic vibes 50's)
where I plug in the amp cable to the bass, the metal ring always spins and eventually comes off the bass.
is there any way to fix this problem? no matter how tight I tighten it, sooner or later it falls off.

could you tab out what you play? it sounds pretty awesome and can you make a video about how to slap?
afzoomie67 8 months ago
@afzoomie67 - Sorry, I don't tab out my licks. I just don't have the time. But you should learn them yourself, use your ears. I already have a full length DVD on slap, it's called Slap Bass - published by Hal Leonard.

@BassGuitarMag thanks! that response was fast and informative. I'll look for your DVD.
