Sarah Palin comes through the door and says in the dentist drill shriek voice of hers,"Howya all doin in here" Open fire, BAMM BAMMM BAMMM BAMMM reload she's still moving , ha ha ha ha....
This kind of shit happened a lot in the 80's. The era of the blockbuster was booming and the studios wanted to make everything a "hit". Good on Freidkin for putting his foot down. Not only was the original ending more moralistic, but it came full circle in a perverse way (Yukovich becoming a surrogate Chance after his intense experiences).
There is a soundtrack but just getting Wang Chung Greatest Hits would be just easier because they are the band that wrote the whole soundtrack anyways.
Oh my God... Thanks for the right decision, I love this film. I guess this alternative was prepared for guys to take a vacation in Canada. BTW, PLEASE RELEASE THE SOUND TRACK OF THIS FILM. It's one of the best sound track released!
Chance was like the Jay-Z 4 this movie and Chance dying is like Jay-Z retiring and Vucovich is like Kanye West taking over it's just so gangsta this movie.
I saw this movie back in 1985 and I recently saw it again. In both cases it was quite shocking and surprising to watch Chance die. It was brilliant. This movie was a master piece from the beggining to the end.
This fearless dirty cop, who lived above the law couldn't have a different ending. He had to died to let Petersen come back to us in another brillian character, the best of all, Grissom in CSI.
Heard about this one. Easily one of the best thrillers ever to come out of the slick 1980s and possibly the last classic flick that Billy Friedkin made.
Chance ROCKED, the maniac, cowboy cop that we all kinda might like to be in a crazy world, but can't be! It was sooo unexpected and reiveting! Vukovich becomes the same lunatic that Chance was...
Chance was a reckless, crazy, unsafe nut. Sooner or later a bullet was going to kill him or those near him. Killing Chance at the end was unexpected and got you to say Holy Shit he got killed. This ending was just plain lame.
I love Billy and hated to see his character die, but I do like the original ending better. This alternate ending was just kind of generic. Thanks for posting it, though. I'm glad I got to see it.

As a former offset press operator, I couldn't help but root Masters through the whole movie.

Had they kept this alternate ending, the movie would have died in the mouth.

I'm glad they kept the ending. Killing off Chance was a huge twist and totally unexpected.
He wasn't a particularly likeable guy to begin with.
