Impressive, the art in its essence! Awesome Karl Richter performances.
i love how karl richter actually conducts with the correct 1-2-3 strokes of the baton to produce the strict perfect timing of the sind blitze sind donner, and how he doesn't overact with his conducting, he just does the job- AND VERY WELL :)
There is such a dramatic contrast between the singers' facial expression...Donath looks like she's trying to win a beauty contest, constantly smiling through such a deadly serious text. Drives me nuts. The singing is absolutely sublime, though, and if you wanna hear 'Baroque Style' there's plenty of it. I prefer to hear women who sound like women and not 12 year old boys.
Well, to my mind Richter's dramatisation of Bach is a thoroughly worthwhile contribution to the Bach landscape. Yes, I'm sure that Bach academics will find much to criticise, but Richter has contributed a lot to my appreciation of Bach and for that I will be always thankful.
Hamari sings great here, the total piece of music it great. it's a pity though that the C flutes aren't wooden ones it make big difference, those flutes of steel sound a lot sharper, wood sound nicer and smoother
Richter's recordings are dramatic and beautiful, but if you want to hear Bach performed in a more "authentic" manner (the way it was likely performed in Bach's time) Harnoncourt or Rifkin is a better choice.
@flbnice Gorgeous, isn't it? About his inspiration- Bach was a professing Christian, and often wrote prayers before and after composing his works. A lot of his compositions are about Christian themes, such as this work or Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, or the Magnificat. When I hear Bach's music, I feel like I get a glimpse of the glory and magnificence of God.
The soprano has a lovely voice but smiles inappropriately considering the text and is really distracting to me.
I'm a mezzo, so can tell instantly when a man is singing; even the best of them sound artificial to my ear...like circus freaks...it doesn't matter to me how "lovely" they sound. If you like them, fine...the sound just leaves me cold.
Tak więc mój Jezus został pojmany. Puśćcie Go! Zostawcie! Nie wiążcie Go! Księżyc i światło, Zgasły z żalu, Ponieważ mój Jezus został pojmany. Puśćcie Go! Zostawcie! Nie wiążcie Go! Oni prowadzili Go, On jest związany.

So nice to hear a woman singing alto. If I have to sit through another Bach concert with a countertenor singing the alto solo, I'm going to go postal.
My problem with a countertenor is the hollow, plastic sound. Unless you're deaf, you know that a countertenor doesn't sound like a woman. I'm not sure what the "visual one" you refer to is.
well, that a matter of opinion and your are entitled to have yours different than mine, the visual one I mean with looking at a man and you hear a total different voice that you would expect, that also is important and plays a big roll in the whole acceptance.
I myself like it and I love Heandel's music specially written for them ( women in that time were not supposed to sing on stage)
Philippe Jaroussky is one of my favorites.
I go every year to Naarden to see the Passion, Daniels performed
For your information I go every year to the Matteaus Passion in Naarden Holland, mostly it's a counter tenor like Daniels who performs I really do love it, the antique instruments and the voice from that time in that church makes that experience totally complete.
My MATTER OF OPINION is that I like the sound of a woman better than a countertenor. The FACT is that they sound different, even an unusually musical countertenor such as David Daniels or Tyler Wayne.
I'll have to check my history books to see if any of Handel's music was debuted by NON-surgically-altered male sops and altos, the sound of which, my reading tells me, differed greatly from that of castrati. My reading also tells me that Bach's music was always debuted by female sops and altos, though a better researcher might correct me on that. Either way, the current fad of replacing every mezzo and alto with a countertenor has worn very thin with me.
Don't forget to place this recording in the sixties. Singing techniques were different than nowadays and vibrato was much more common,These days baroque music is often sung as plain as possible. But not always nicer. This recording has such great intensity. Beautiful voices.
This sort of vibrato doesn't simply question the point of vibrato - to elaborate and ornament - but hinders any other expressivity intelligible to listeners. The whole idea of the crescendo over tied notes presupposes the use of vibrato only at the tail end of the note, not slathered universally like too much mayonnaise.
Wooooooooonderful!

Donath and Hamari do a wonderful job. Their voices blend very well!

Think the duet is too slow and draggy. Not sure if it's on purpose to show the sudden momentum pick up by the chorus.

@rosinlr - agree. Richter's stoicism is equally absurd. Given the material he was dealing with, he had to have worked really hard at that....

Behold, my Savior now is taken,
Moon and Star,
Have for grief the night forsaken,
Since my Savior now is taken.
They lead Him hence;
with cords they bind Him
Chorus:
Loose Him! Leave Him! Bind Him not!

Here is other version, that I like more:
Behold, my Jesus now is taken,
Leave him, halt, bind him not!
Moon and stars have for grief hidden
their faces,
Since my Jesus now is taken.
Leave him, halt, bind him not!
They lead him away, he is bound
