  • I've seen rougher seas! USS MOUNT VERNON (LSD-39) and USS AUSTIN (LPD-4) 1980s.

  • tin cans rock

  • Thats my boat! MM3 "Mickey Spillane"

  • In weather like this, our job was to pump out the chain locker, 5 decks below the bosun's hole. Rough weather, old musty compartments, ship is tossing and turning and too far to the head. Hard times, but still a ride Disneyland can't touch.

    Those were the days!

    DD 498 1967-1968, DD 445 1968-1969, DD 808 1969-1971

  • Just heavy swells. No big deal. Nice footage!!

  • Good old 874; MMs & BTs lived under the fantail, and the escape hatch leaked like it was open in stuff like this.

We still had to ride out stuff like this on Boomers, but at least the hatches did not leak.

    ;^)

  • Yep, DDR 874 was a Gearing. I was on it from late 67 to early 68 while waiting for orders to Nuke School. I remember playing tag with a Russian Trawler in a really bad storm in December 67 in which two guys were hurt pretty badly.

  • Yup, brazosjaime, that would be a Gearing alright...No 52 mount...Tube deck instead...Served on a Gearing right around that time...Part destroyer and part submarine with that class...Same with the Sumners and Fletchers...Got a little wet up there on the focs'l...

  • Date correction. We arrived in Kaohsiung on 2 FEB 69!

  • I can't see the hull number but guessing by the distance between the 2 stacks. I would say it's Gearing class destroyer.

  • enjoyed seeing this clip. looks like the 1st dd is a gearing class fram ll? i was on the DD878 USS VESOLE 70-73. Atlantic Fleet DESRON 2 in Charleston SC. very memorable times living on a tincan. 1st DD from lantflt in Vietnam.

  • @texasccl2

I was on DD-869 (USS Arnold J Isbell) from Nov 65 until May 66, then DDR-874 (USS Duncan) for the remainder of my 4 year enlistment. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger!

  • I wish I could help you, but I can't see the hull number even in the original 8mm movies. I can say, with certainty, that we were en-route to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The DLG clip was the first day of the transit. We arrived in Kaohsiung on 2 Apr 1969.

  • Which DLG is in the 12th second spot?
