  • Ileana Cotrubas' face is amazing.

  • Ah , those were the days. So rare to find a singer who really understands the music and doesn't try to mess around with it in a superficial way. Bravo Flicka!

  • no one inspires me like Flicka.

  • :D I watched this in my Music class recently <3

  • Suck on that Adya! =D

  • I'm surprised I haven't broken the play button yet *-*

  • Holy crap, this is perfection o.o

  • Where can I find all "Marriage of Figaro"?

This is the best Cherubino, I love the voice of F. Von Stade.

  • The best Cherubino ever!

  • The best Cherubino ever. Perfect voice and coloratura technique.

  • @tamerlano236 Well, I think countertenor would be much better for this role... What do you think?

  • @FrantisekValena1994 I think there's room for both interpretations. I love Von Stade, but I certainly would listen to a good countertenor in the role.

  • @FrantisekValena1994

    No.

Both Marchais and Mozart made it very clear that Cherubino is to be played by a girl.

    It's tradition.

So, even in the original play, Cherubino was to be played by a female.

Mozart also made a lot of the passages in this piece to be extremely difficult for even a countertenor.

Good luck finding a countertenor that is able to sing it.

  • @temperanceluv81 (shortened Beaumarchais' name)

  • @temperanceluv81 Well, traditions...

I think, that countertenor singing this would be a big sensation!

  • @temperanceluv81 I do not think it would be any difficult at all for countertenors to sing this piece or Cherubino as a whole... their music is by far wilder and more difficult than that.

But girls do such a lovely job with it that I do not mind keeping this role a girly business... Moreover I do not find countertenor voices boyish enough... they usually sound rather sophisticated and mature... That is what most conductors and Opera houses still think so they don't see a reason to change that.

  • her face reminds me of number 13 the doctor from doctor house,..^_^,...and wonderful voice as always

  • is this the sound quality of the dvd??? or is it better on the actual dvd? i'm thinking of purchasing it....

  • As dark and heavy mezzos tend to usually be, Flicka`s timbre sounds to me as sweet as honey and light as a feather. Her portrayal of Cherubino is unforgettable; every time I hear her I can`t help but compare the particular aria to 'Non so piu' or 'Voi che sapete'. I love that woman.

  • Ms von Stade (Flicka) at 27-28 years old is a perfectly convincing teenage Cherubino -- and maintained that to the day she gave up the role. Perfection.

  • Quelle belle couleur, mazette !!!!!!!!

  • GLORIOUS!!!

  • I saw Flicka's first Cherubino at the Met, and for me, there never has been anyone else in the role since. I was lucky enough to be able to tell her that in person last year, and she is such a lovely and gracious lady....Brava!

  • @suzanneetmoi That is exactly how I imaged she would be1 What an honor to have met her. You are very lucky. :)

  • Von Stade is the greatest Cherubino EVER!

  • She sounds very well. A good actress too. Thanks for posting!

  • Effing brilliant, and the control makes it incredibly erotic!

  • I've been a fan of Frederica since I was three years old, when my family showed me "Le Nozze De Figaro". She's retiring today, and I was lucky enought to get tickets of her last performance. So, so happy. That VOICE!

  • Flicka is just BEGINNING a farewell tour, which will extend throughout most of the next year. Check her website under "Engagements" for recital dates set SO FAR.

  • Frederika von Stade: what a splendid name!

  • To be fair on Ileana, if I had Flicka singing to me at such close proximity, I'd be pulling a face like that! :D

Amazing. Such great acting and voice. And now I'm going to have to have a lie-down.

  • Ms. Cotrubas is playing for the audience, not a camera, so her facial expressions are exaggerated for that reason. Ms. von Stade is perfection as Cherubino.

  • Ileana Cotrubas is a great soprano great artist she is performing idiot

  • Ah! i've been to one of her masterclasses! she is amazing!

  • I'm so jealous!

  • By God, she's so cute! I want to pick her up and put her in my pocket!

I too think Cotrubas's expressions are sort of weird...she's a great singer, and I love her, but I think right here she's realizing that a star is being born onstage and no one is going to remember anyone but Cherubino after tonight!

  • Her expression, part of her stage acting, is meant to be viewed from a distance out within the audience, and might seem a bit odd up close on camera.

  • yo (L)Flicka!

  • Just listen to that voice--such purity, simplicity, and control!

  • Nobody ever did it better that Flicka!

  • per me la migliore cherubino

  • I hate Susanna's expression here! Why can't she close her mouth at least! cheez...

Btw gr8 performance, Frederica!!! Beautiful, her voice is really.... powerful, but sweet at the same time..

  • Wonderful! And I love those DIMPLES!!!!

  • @Arch5280

Yes, I love too Flicka from head to toe, SPECIALLY INCLUDING THE DIMPLES!

  • oh my god why is von Stade so incredible.

  • Cotrubas looks like she's watching her 2-year-old reciting something and being proud of him rofl

  • yes, it's much more enjoyable if you focus only on Cherubino, though I agree, Cotrubas' expressions are so distracting, arf!

  • well because Cherubino is funny somehow. she's a woman about to marry and lots of serious things are happening in her life and he's just a boy that has no worries and no cares. but as she likes him - she doesnt mock him for being so young

i think she plays really well

as for Frederica - she is the most amazing Cherubino ever. she's a miracle

  • Haha! So true....!

  • Frederica von Stade...ein bravouröser Cheru-

    bino....BRAVO!!!

  • Thats my cousin!!!

  • Who?

  • flicka

    well my moms

my moms mom is her dads sister :)

  • ??? how can she be?

    e a parlare mi sforza d'amore

un desio ch'io non posso spiegar.

  • Parlo d'amor vegliando,

    parlo d'amor sognando,

    all'acque, all'ombre, ai monti,

    ai fiori, all'erbe, ai fonti,

    all'eco, all'aria, ai venti,

¡adorables!

  • I fall in love with Frederica. From now on, I'll be your loyal fan. :-)

  • My beloved Cherubino! Brava von Stade!

  • outstanding! and a bit better than Voi che sapete, which she seemed to capture better with Solti in 1980

  • Amazing! how could anyone not love Flicka?

  • If you watch Frederica from 1980, her voice is so much mature. It's amazing.

  • her voice is .... wow.... amazing. It spins and sparkles!!!

  • this is so good, plus she look so pretty. how old was she?

  • I believe she was about 28. What a beautiful lady.

  • In 1971 (this performance) she would have been 25 or 26

  • You mean 0:00 to 3:02 she is superb!

  • @ 1:30, she is superb!

  • Yeah, Cotrubas' reaction is completely wrong for this scene. It looks like SHE has a crush on Cherubino...her smile should be more like a knowing smirk. But Flicka is brilliant as usual.

  • she's supposed look like that, one of the hilarious aspects of da Ponte's script is that all of the woman are interested in Cherubino, they all make fun of him, but are still attracted.

  • Perhaps so, but I still like when it's staged for her to have more of a coy smirk.

  • I agree since Cherubino is such a romantic , the ladies are attracted or at least attentive!!

  • Her voice freaken sparkles here!

  • Btw, Suzanne's expression is so dumb here. It's kind of annoying - can't she at least close her mouth?

  • I'm speechless! Her voice soars, really! And she's so, so beautiful! Wow!

  • correction!!! I made the comments below but I meant to send it to another posting on you tube. My mistake.

  • This is not Cotrubas and von Stade! I think this labeled incorrectly. This is Cecilia Bartoli and the one singing Non so piu is not von Stade... it is somebody else. Somebody, please tell me I am not mixed up! LOL!

  • It is Cotrubas. Isn't she great?

  • She stunned me thirty years ago when I first heard her in this role and continues to do so. Sometimes we are blessed.

  • Flicka Was the very first Cherubino that I ever saw on the stage and she has yet to be surpassed (although, Susan Graham is close!)

  • Thanks for your comment Skylark. Very "inspiring" comment..LOL

  • Wow! Federica is amazing!! So expressive and her interpretation of this character is inspiring!

  • I get chills whenever I watch this DVD! Von Stade, Cotrubas, and Te Kanawa are amazing!!! Thanks for posting. :)

  • Awesome interpretation, however, please forgive my ignorance, is this the aria "Non so piu cosa son"?

  • Yes, it is.

    ¡Magnífica interpretación!

Una pequeña desafinación al final, pero, bueno...

  • Yup.

  • where can i get this dvd?

  • I ordered my copy from amazon. It's a Glyndebourne production from1973 put out by Arthaus Musik-catalogue number 101 089.(2005/2006 catalogue). It's thoroughly enjoyable.

  • She's amazing! She amazes me with every mezzo role she plays. :D

  • Flawless!!!

  • I dont agree any of you. Look my nick. Im a fan of this opera. Cherubino is " Pamela Helen Stephen "

  • You're in the minority when it comes to Cherubino. Von Stade absolutely owns this role.

  • Pamela is excellent, but von Stade is "perfect, the epitome of "Cherubino."

  • glorious! wonderful! fantastic! exquisite! brava! BRAVISSIMA! Flicka is so adorable. I love it! Goodness, how young she must have been!!

  • von Stade was born in 45 so she was 28 at the time of this performance

  • I'm actually getting the sniffles. She's amazing.

  • I agree. She's the ultimate Cherubino. So much energy, playfulness, and of course that gorgeous voice. Really wonderful!

  • This is Von Stade I know, playful, beautiful and a full voice...

  • She still owns this role. Till this day!

  • THE Cherubino of her generation. Nobody could touch her. I have this DVD and watch it constantly. Brava Flicka!
