"In the closing months of World War II, a young American lieutenant, named Charles von Stade, was killed in Germany when his jeep ran over a land mine. Six weeks later, at a hospital back home in New Jersey, his young widow, Sara, gave birth to a daughter, Frederica, who would grow up to become one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.
Frederica von Stade never knew her father, but the love letters he sent his young bride from the front survived. "
Esta es la mejor interpretación moderna de Cherubino que se ha hecho y la única que rivaliza con la de Suzanne Danco de la legendaria grabación de Erich Kleiber (1956). La de Flika pasará a la historia como es una de las mejores voces del siglo XX.
Ah , those were the days. So rare to find a singer who really understands the music and doesn't try to mess around with it in a superficial way. Bravo Flicka!
@FrantisekValena1994 I think there's room for both interpretations. I love Von Stade, but I certainly would listen to a good countertenor in the role.
@temperanceluv81 I do not think it would be any difficult at all for countertenors to sing this piece or Cherubino as a whole... their music is by far wilder and more difficult than that.
But girls do such a lovely job with it that I do not mind keeping this role a girly business... Moreover I do not find countertenor voices boyish enough... they usually sound rather sophisticated and mature... That is what most conductors and Opera houses still think so they don't see a reason to change that.
As dark and heavy mezzos tend to usually be, Flicka`s timbre sounds to me as sweet as honey and light as a feather. Her portrayal of Cherubino is unforgettable; every time I hear her I can`t help but compare the particular aria to 'Non so piu' or 'Voi che sapete'. I love that woman.
Ms von Stade (Flicka) at 27-28 years old is a perfectly convincing teenage Cherubino -- and maintained that to the day she gave up the role. Perfection.
I saw Flicka's first Cherubino at the Met, and for me, there never has been anyone else in the role since. I was lucky enough to be able to tell her that in person last year, and she is such a lovely and gracious lady....Brava!
I've been a fan of Frederica since I was three years old, when my family showed me "Le Nozze De Figaro". She's retiring today, and I was lucky enought to get tickets of her last performance. So, so happy. That VOICE!
Flicka is just BEGINNING a farewell tour, which will extend throughout most of the next year. Check her website under "Engagements" for recital dates set SO FAR.
Ms. Cotrubas is playing for the audience, not a camera, so her facial expressions are exaggerated for that reason. Ms. von Stade is perfection as Cherubino.
By God, she's so cute! I want to pick her up and put her in my pocket!
I too think Cotrubas's expressions are sort of weird...she's a great singer, and I love her, but I think right here she's realizing that a star is being born onstage and no one is going to remember anyone but Cherubino after tonight!
well because Cherubino is funny somehow. she's a woman about to marry and lots of serious things are happening in her life and he's just a boy that has no worries and no cares. but as she likes him - she doesnt mock him for being so young
i think she plays really well
as for Frederica - she is the most amazing Cherubino ever. she's a miracle
Yeah, Cotrubas' reaction is completely wrong for this scene. It looks like SHE has a crush on Cherubino...her smile should be more like a knowing smirk. But Flicka is brilliant as usual.
she's supposed look like that, one of the hilarious aspects of da Ponte's script is that all of the woman are interested in Cherubino, they all make fun of him, but are still attracted.
This is not Cotrubas and von Stade! I think this labeled incorrectly. This is Cecilia Bartoli and the one singing Non so piu is not von Stade... it is somebody else. Somebody, please tell me I am not mixed up! LOL!
I ordered my copy from amazon. It's a Glyndebourne production from1973 put out by Arthaus Musik-catalogue number 101 089.(2005/2006 catalogue). It's thoroughly enjoyable.

@FrantisekValena1994
No.
Both Marchais and Mozart made it very clear that Cherubino is to be played by a girl.
It's tradition.
So, even in the original play, Cherubino was to be played by a female.
Mozart also made a lot of the passages in this piece to be extremely difficult for even a countertenor.
Good luck finding a countertenor that is able to sing it.

Non so più cosa son, cosa faccio,
or di foco, ora sono di ghiaccio,
ogni donna cangiar di colore,
ogni donna mi fa palpitar.
Solo ai nomi d'amor, di diletto,
mi si turba, mi s'altera il petto
e a parlare mi sforza d'amore
un desio ch'io non posso spiegar.

Parlo d'amor vegliando,
parlo d'amor sognando,
all'acque, all'ombre, ai monti,
ai fiori, all'erbe, ai fonti,
all'eco, all'aria, ai venti,
che il suon de' vani accenti
portano via con sé.
E se non ho chi mi oda,
parlo d'amor con me.
