  • The performance of this song in the film is much better. Joan does it justice, absolutely.

  • Joan is fantastic, as always, but the band doesn't "snap." I think the missing ingredient is the second drummer, who passed away just before the movie was released.

  • I love the drummer with the hat and glasses, cool dude.

  • listen to her sing heatwave with the Funk Brothers...she owns that one as well..what a voice

  • @bealestbluesss

Very few times have i thought that covers were better than the original but 'broken hearted' and 'heatwave' by Joan are incredible versions. I have wondered how these performances would rank on modern day talent shows like 'Got Talent'??

  • @wimboes50 There is a lot of good talent however not to my taste...I wonder what Simon would have to say about

Joan. Oh I bought the dvd and have it to listen to when I please..there's a second dvd called the deleted scene.those to are grrrrrrreat!

  • I love Joan.....glad she did this song n made it sound awesome compared to the other covers of this song

  • my words exactly!!

  • cannot top that performance on the movie by far. still love that song tho and her

  • Yes, Joan absolutely nails it on that film Standing in the Shadows of Motown. That film totally floored me first time I saw it. If you've never seen it, do yourself a huge favor, find it and watch.

  • for me it seems that she sounds a little hoarse - if so: respect for "surviving" the piece.

  • BBB this me!

  • Look this one up here on youtube.

Joan Osborne - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - [ST

It's a much better rendition with the funk bros.

And if you like this you should watch for a film; Standing in the Shadows of Motown.....the story of the funk bros.

  • the funk brothers are motown and the original singers are the best but sadly most are no longer around and so this girl does a good job of portraying the magic of the motown sound to maybe a new audience to appreciate

  • Is Joan "with child" during this taping? She appears to be. Many moons ago, I made the mistake of asking a woman attending my yard sale of her due-date. She promptly informed me that she was not pregnant. Totally embarassed (destroyed), I implored her to select a free gift from the army blanket by the oak tree. Haven't seen her since that day. So, forgive me Joan, but ya look a little preggers here.

  • I know I'm a little late replying (okay very late) but oh well. Yes she was pregnant at the time.

    Joan never disappoints, she's amazing.

  • The Funk Brothers just don't sound right when they're not in the snake pit. This is too clean.. It almost sounds like a watered down Funk Brothers. They need that unique sound they're known for... You know, the gritty yet polished - distorted yet clean sound only The Snakepit was able to provide

  • @PJDooWop Hey, were you in the Snake Pit??? If not, then you can only be refering to the old sound of a record...The Funk Brothers at this time and now are the ONLY ones who has the TRUE "Motown Sound" period...not watered down...PERFECTED!!!!Like Fine Wine!

  • My beef isn't and never was with The Funk Brothers.. My beef is with their sound guy that dropped the ball. Yeah, you won't recreate the atmosphere of a Motown record in a live setting, but this is NOT the Motown sound.

  • @PJDooWop Remember that the version on SITSOM has *overdubs* added after the fact. What you're hearing here is TOTAL LACK OF A STRING SECTION

  • bit o motown trivia, this was originly offered to marvin who turned it down,to record 'i heard it through the grapevine' by whitfield and strong.gordy was so mad he threatened to cut 'grapevine' with smokey who refused, knowing marvins love for the song.then gordy threatened to shelve grapevine til his sister, who was married to marvin at the time, gave him a good earful. jimmy ruffin was given 'brokenhearted' to record(thanks to david ruffin who was lead vocal with the temps)

    the rest is history.

  • sorry...the only way Joan "owns" this song is if she has the record...Her voice is breaking up, especially during the chorus where she has to belt it out...she has a decent voice for her own genre, but can't hold a candle to Jimmy Ruffin's original...JMO...

  • i don't get how people pick covers over the originals,or favor it for whatever reason.Jimmy~need i say more? (: cool cover though

  • yeah Joan's a cutie and sings nice enough... lol I'm white but sometimes there's just songs that white singers should leave alone and that's one of em!

  • well in fairness, I have the Standing in the Shadows of Motown deluxe set with the concert CD's and Joan nails it there, so maybe on this video her voice was having a bad day!

  • Yeah maybe she just had an off night on this video, and i think she was pregnant at the time to...But you're right, on Standing in the Shadows she hits it out of the park

  • @ZGAZBass28 ... Pardon me, but wish I could have an "off night" at the mic like this. It's not the same production as the film, so one has to factor that in. This is still an excellent vocal performance.

  • "Funk Brothers" at their best!!!!!

  • i can listen on this a thousand times and i will do it again and again. the beauty of this song rendered by the Funk Brotheres and Joan Osborne is ageless.

  • Joan & The Funk Brothers just WONDERFUL thanks.

  • she has an annoying talking voice, but a beautiful voice for singing

  • Standing in the Shadows of Motown is one of my most favourite movies of all time. It is a shame that it took this long to unveil the Funk Brothers. RIP in the memebers that are no longer with them!!...We will keep them in our memories!

  • This and You Really Got a Hold on Me were my favorite numbers from the documentary. RIP Pistol!!!

  • My GOD!!! She ***OWNS*** this song.

Wish I could see her perform with the FB!

    I LOVE! the Motown sound.

Heck, I would probably CRY seeing this band with Joan.

AWESOME, FANTABULOUS, WOW, WOW, WOW, WOW...

  • i agree

  • X - glad to see somebody else appreciate the FBs. What an INCREDIBLe group of musicians. Probably the best of all time. And its good to see people finally giving them their props.

They are on the top of my "wishing I had seen" list.

  • The point of this tribute, was to allow the Funk Brothers, (the true backbone of these fabulous songs), stars to shine.

We all know these songs, and yes, Ms. Osborne belts it out very well, but honestly, these tunes are so timeless and with such unique beats, that anyone can sing them well.

This humble girl, born and raised in Detroit, thanks the Funk Brothers for their creativity and talent! Their would be NO Motown without the Funk Brothers!

  • "Anyone can sing them well"? Oh, come on, get real. It takes a special talent to deliver some of these songs properly.

  • When/where did this take place?

  • This took place at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. ...at least one of these did.

  • 10 Stars!

  • I think she is amazing ~ Love you Joan!

  • A great song is a great song for all time...nice job, Joan.
