I'm hard of hearing and the little boy mother is more likely reading lips and she sounds deaf to me and by her signing skills, I sign and wear hearing aids
@MsDnoosh His mother is deaf. Most deaf people can read lips. Watch the vid again. The Dr. is talking to her and she is looking right at him and reading his lips.
She sounds like a characteristic hearing impaired or deaf person speaking-- they can't hear the nuances to verbal speech that a hearing person can hear and accurately imitate, so a lot of the time (not sure if being pre-lingual or post-lingual when deafness occurs makes a difference) it sounds odd to a hearing person and results in thinking that they can't 'speak well'. She seems to be lip reading, then clarifying to make sure she understands. To me, that says she is conversing well.
This video has inspired me to go to medical school. Although I'm concerned with issues of liability suits and contracting air borne diseases. Do these things happen enough to be cause for concern or am I over thinking it?
I wish there were more episodes, watch ER videos really help me with my school work. I'm in college for an Associates in HIT but I plan on moving to a Nursing Program next because I am not sure what I want to do. But I think a Nurse is closer to what I want to be. Thanks for posting this, it would be awesome if you could do a series at your hospital... I would watch it every day!
Sorry for this delayed reply to your question. This was actually filmed several years ago but features many clinicians who are still here, and the stories have been popular among viewers, so we've chosen to leave the vids online. Not sure if MSNBC still airs this series or anything similar.
What a great documentary! North Memorial seems like a great place with great people. Seeing Josh's ordeal and the way that doctor's dealt with his injuries and the communication barrier with his parents made me cry. It's great that such physicians are available in your service region!
Thanks to all the doctors, nurses, EMT's and techs who do so much to help their fellow man. God bless.

@MsDnoosh Actually, both of the little boy's parents are hearing impaired.

@MsDnoosh if the reason you say that is because she was responding to the doctors, its likely because she's reading their lips

Seeing the boy and his father communicate seems to have a calming affect on him. It's clever how he knows sign language too.
