Ediths character quickly developed into a loving, sweet and gentle soul. Glorias character went from loving and sweet to irritating and rude. Wish she had stayed like the former.
I saw a piece one time where Sally Struther's was talking about how Carroll was such a a father figure to her at that time, and she referred specifically to this scene. It makes me cry every time I see it. Thanks for posting.
one minute you're laughing the next you're practically cryin'!.....
back then (even though Gloria and Mike had all their "Liberal" POVs)they still belived in the SACREDNESS LIFE....and it was SAD when she lost the baby! not any of this CRAP now a days from docs who are sayin' "r u sure it was a baby? maybe it was just Tissue!!!!
gotta love this show
prolly the most tear jerking moments when gloria said "Hi Daddy" and "I Love you too Daddy"...
@metorido Actually, back in Edith's generation even breastfeeding was discouraged by doctors. Natural childbirth was practically unheard of and the father wasn't allowed to be present at the delivery. More boners from the annals of the medical community. :(
@ds41980 You should check your facts before you post. Wade in "Roe v Wade", was the head of the County Health Department in Dallas. Abortion was illegal in Texas and other states, and was legal in other states. What the Supreme Court did is strip the state legislatures of their Constitutional right to pass laws banning abortion in their states.
I never heard of it being legal outright like it is now. I do know however that there were circumstances in which rich ladies or people of power could arrange to have a procedure done with a private doctor because they could say that they were psychologically affected and traumatized by a rape and couldn't go through with the pregnancy and come out sane at the end. Thus it would be a medically neccesary procedure and therefore legal.
I can tell from the way you word your responses that you are a know it all. Up untill now I put up general responses with inquisitive posts. My first one specifically read "Did New York have special rules?" To which your snotty smug reply was "you should check your facts before you reply." I only posted one fact which is common knowledge. Thank you for your info though. Unlike you, I feel there is always something we can learn from others.
@gforce4all It was only about three or four weeks along, just a cluster of cells. People lose babies like that very often and never even know they're pregnant. It's actually very common. Happened to me twice
@demmylowther Most doctors just used their common since back in those days, most of the time they are correct, especially if they are an experienced doctor. This is much better than running up medical bills that people cant afford.

The actress who played Mona (I don't know her real name since the end credits aren't shown here) had a small role in a movie with Lily Taylor called Dogfight.
this was one of the best episodes of this show, and there were so many great ones! this one always brings tears to my eyes. they are all such brilliant actors, especially Carroll O'Connor in this episode. his character may be a bigoted ass (though he's always proven to be that ass in every episode), but he loves his little girl. thanks mynjunkyard for posting these shows!! :-)
7:07 -- this is just about the only time in the whole history of All in the Family that an episode had background music. This is an early 1971 episode. Beautiful acting in the last scene.
no. when the doc tells you to lay down you have to do it. my friend was pregnant and she didn't listen to the doc and she lost her baby. you have to lay flat on your back for the whole day.
We've seen this type of teleplay many times but this was the most moving one. And I'm not surprised in the least that it was All in the Family. Bravo.
I saw the same plot on another show the other night on regular TV and I swear, you'd think it was happening to the Queen of England. The melodrama-the plot so focused on how humiliating and embarrassing it was for the mother to be-she was reacting like a child and her candy was being taken away. It was so vain and so GD pretentious. YUCK!!!
I think they wrote Archie better in the earlier seasons. He was just a working stiff who worried about his family, even if he was bigoted. Later, he just became a caricature right-wing idiot. Here he had some depth. But in the early episodes Edith could be kind of bitter, while later she got more depth and wisdom. Archie is more real here, more human.

if only there was a way to lower abortion rates without contravening personal Liberty. But alas - there's not. Freedom isn't always pretty.

When this episode aired I remember my mom weeping. It was one of those seminal moments in TV history.

Isn't this the first season? 1970 or 1971? Abortion was still illegal in the U.S. until 1973. Did New York have special rules?

All In the Family was written by story tellers. Most of the crap on TV today is written by joke writers.

why would her dr. tell another patient she is pregnant? weird!

No Dr. can make a prognosis in a bedroom on whether she will be ok.She would be in the hospital having tests done on her.

The facial expressions on O'Connor say so much more than many actors can do with a whole paragraph's worth of dialogue.
