I believe that this song could be taken up tempo a little bit just to make it less slow. Other than the tempo this kid has great tone and good control.
One of the problems with today's musicians is that they begin right away with sightreading. While it's essential to be able to make the connection between the instrument and the sheet, it's far more important to be able to control the instrument properly.
I remember my first day of trumpet, I stuck the whole mouthpiece in my mouth, cluelessly. It took me a week to be able to play a note; a year to decently control them.
For a first year student, I suppose this guy is alright.
This was a four month student and into month three, he was fitted with braces and had to relearn the little he knew. Five years later, he's earned a spot as fourth trumpet in the city orchestra.
You have to start somewhere. The most important thing is that you have discovered self-expression and developed an appreciation for music.
What I was trying to say is that he had to relearn how to play when he got the braces on, having wires on his teeth changed his technique, this put him back.
Now he's had the braces off three years later and he's having to again, relearn his technique. The subtle changes of having things installed and removed in your mouth change how you play.
However yes, you absolutely can play trumpet with braces.
@thphaca thats what my old elementary school teacher taught me to do... isucked real bad. but i went on to junior high and at first it was boring because he made me play some real easy stuff. i thought he was wrong, but i was. now, im the best trumpet player in my school
I agree. There's nothing wrong with using sheet music, but if you learn from the start that you're always supposed to keep up with what you're playing by reading on a piece of paper, you're far away from what really is music. Sure, use sheet music to learn the song, but don't let it take the upper hand when it comes to the actual playing.
this is DIXIE it IS suppose to be full of energy... listen to a recording of it.. and you will see my point... you should improvise and speed up the notes....it was the same thing over and over again. it gets old after a while..i know i sound like i am a professional but im not. im just really into this sort of music so :) but you have good sound :)good luck in future concerts :)
I cannot believe that you would say something like this! As musicians, we are supposed to understand that everyone is learning, everyone had varied levels of talent and learning history. Keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything helpful to say. Even food critics do not hold respect for their commentary if they use such abusive know-it-all superiority in their columns and blogs. Read kars1003. This person is a professional, kind, and helpful.
If you are not a pedagog, then keep your comments appropriate for the age and learning level of the person. Are you helping, or just making him feel bad? Who cares if he is playing it wrong, so do a lot of people who are learning to improvise. You're right, this isn't something like Benny Goodman would play, or even Armstrong. But everyone learns, and gets better. Encourage people, and they will remember you. Offend them, and they will make sure you never work in the business!
Stop playing why? Because he wasn't perfect in his first year learning?
If he had stopped as you so suggested he wouldn't be playing second trumpet in the orchestra now at the age of twenty.
Thanks for the supportive comment though.

good sense of time. try mouthpiece buzzing to get your notes more centered. they sometimes land a tad thin before you ease into the center.

Not bad, but this isn't jazz. He's playing the jazz figures wrong. A little of technique and he's alright.
