im one of like 10 people who are white at a historically black college, and personally I dont really mind it. I think everyone there is a person like me, I dont feel out of place. They have two arms, two eyes, they speak and we have conversations. I cant really understand this need for people to look like me... no ones really going to ever look like me so i dont need to be educated with a certain this or that, I just want to learn.

@coffee2956 Langston university, OK. I'm a biology major and this school has the best math and science department around, and the best physical therapy school in the state is on campus, which is where I intend to go once I have my degree.
Yeah, I went to school in Colorado and was often the only non-white in upper division classes. What sucked wasn't that I was the only nonwhite person - I don't seek out diversity just for the sake of diversity.
It killed my college experience because white students often chatted with each other yet would either ignore me or try to keep conversation short if I tried to get to know them. And because I invested so many resources to go to that school, I couldn't just transfer.
My college experience was that relative to the population, minority representation was disproportionately high through admissions quotas and 'diversity scholarships', especially those aimed at international students (.01% of our students are Eritrean!).
My minority roommates used to joke that I should apply for these free rides as a German-American, typically when I was bitching as I got ready for work while they were getting ready for parties.
My high school prided itself on the fact that its minority enrollment was very close to the national minority population percentages- promoting itself as a non-discriminatory institution. While the intentions may be good, this still didn't change the racial undertones in the school- the fact that , especially during lunch, people segregated themselves. Even in college, there seems to be this same "high school lunch table" stigma where people willingly stay away from those outside their race.

Diversity does not = every racial group equally represented. Diversity means the campus welcomes people from diverse cultures, and makes a sincere effort to be inclusive to those people.
What's this guys point? Why is race this big of an issue anyway, stop trying to find people racially like you and find people who are mentally like you. Colleges are for learning, not for providing an equal race safe zone to feel free from being a minority.
I mean that I don't mean people who have all the same opinions as me and can't offer me anything, when I say mentally like me I mean people who care about the same issues I do as well as caring about learning. Mentally I care about certain issues over others and want progress and to learn if I can.
I think it's important to find people who look like you but at the same time, you do have to be realistic. Blacks make up about 11-17% of the US. So ideally, a college campus will have 11-17% African Americans. (ex at a college of 5,000, there should be about 600 African Americans. But there are tons of other factors why it'll be smaller). I go to a private school now and most people are white.
As a black person this is fuckin stupid. There are more white people than anybody else in America. There is no possible way to have an equal amount of every ethnic goup at every college. There are several states where there are very little to no black people or other minorities. There are also several HBCUs , that is probably where most of them go. Also this New paltz area is over 70 percent white and seems to be in a subrural are, I sure as fuck don't want to be in a place like that.

im one of like 10 people who are white at a historically black college, and personally I dont really mind it. I think everyone there is a person like me, I dont feel out of place. They have two arms, two eyes, they speak and we have conversations. I cant really understand this need for people to look like me... no ones really going to ever look like me so i dont need to be educated with a certain this or that, I just want to learn.

Yeah, I went to school in Colorado and was often the only non-white in upper division classes. What sucked wasn't that I was the only nonwhite person - I don't seek out diversity just for the sake of diversity.
It killed my college experience because white students often chatted with each other yet would either ignore me or try to keep conversation short if I tried to get to know them. And because I invested so many resources to go to that school, I couldn't just transfer.

My college experience was that relative to the population, minority representation was disproportionately high through admissions quotas and 'diversity scholarships', especially those aimed at international students (.01% of our students are Eritrean!).
My minority roommates used to joke that I should apply for these free rides as a German-American, typically when I was bitching as I got ready for work while they were getting ready for parties.

My high school prided itself on the fact that its minority enrollment was very close to the national minority population percentages- promoting itself as a non-discriminatory institution. While the intentions may be good, this still didn't change the racial undertones in the school- the fact that , especially during lunch, people segregated themselves. Even in college, there seems to be this same "high school lunch table" stigma where people willingly stay away from those outside their race.

Diversity does not = every racial group equally represented. Diversity means the campus welcomes people from diverse cultures, and makes a sincere effort to be inclusive to those people.

I think it's important to find people who look like you but at the same time, you do have to be realistic. Blacks make up about 11-17% of the US. So ideally, a college campus will have 11-17% African Americans. (ex at a college of 5,000, there should be about 600 African Americans. But there are tons of other factors why it'll be smaller). I go to a private school now and most people are white.

As a black person this is fuckin stupid. There are more white people than anybody else in America. There is no possible way to have an equal amount of every ethnic goup at every college. There are several states where there are very little to no black people or other minorities. There are also several HBCUs , that is probably where most of them go. Also this New paltz area is over 70 percent white and seems to be in a subrural are, I sure as fuck don't want to be in a place like that.
