Freddie Mercury may have had a wide range (including low to high) but he himself did not sing that high. He was a baritone who could hit tenor notes(but not live). A true Tenor is someone like Steve Perry or Arnel Pineda (new Journey singer) who can on command, hit a B4, C5, even a D5 in live concerts. Freddie Mercury, being the baritone that he is, could hit an A#4 in live concerts, but not much higher than that. Soto is not too far from Freddie's range, and so he could sing Queen not Journey.

I'm one of those dense guitarists that have always assumed a good singer could sing to any song I wrote, no matter what key. My X used to have fits with me over this! LOL.

Freddie Mercury sang all the part perfectly when his condition was fine like live in leiden.. Soto's range is much lower than Freddie.. Freddie used to hit the note more than the highest part of Bohemian Rhapsody during his prime time. (79~82)

He came down to Puerto Rico not too long ago with Journey and he did an AMAZING job. Everybody just loved him. Doing Queen, he's just as good. I, personally, prefer him over Paul Rogers doing Queen. Jeff's just an awesome singer and also very charismatic. GREAT backup singers too... Thanks for the post.

I love how doesn't try to hit the high notes. Instead of completely screwing it up by trying to sing the high notes, he just stays low and makes it sound good. Not many people can hit the high notes Freddie hit(if anyone could, I don't think it is possible), and JSS understands that(apparently). Most people I see that try to cover Queen, try to hit every note, and it only makes it sound horrible, JSS sounds great.
