I don't know why do some people think UNIT is evil....they are the good guys and, as far as I remember in the series they are only shown in good light. So...what's your problem people? Is your philosophy making you see what you want to see, not what is really there?
@HazyJonny I think we were supposed to notice something had changed the Doctor. Ten cared more about losing Joan, than the innocent lives lost in 1913, so he has no space to criticize humans. I loved the Brig, and as much as I admired Tennant's performance, I was turned off by Ten's Great Gallifreyan Father:"I have the right to speak for Earth attitude-- he became the "Q" of Doctor Who. Still his attitude in this episode was a great set up for Water Of Mars.
BTW, the reason the doctor was actually impressed of the valliant is from the fact the master was the main designer of the ship, as show in the last few episdoes

You know, I have a bone to pick with the new series. I think they're trying way too hard to make anything remotely military look evil or stupid. UNIT was one of the main focuses of Doctor Who all throughout Pertwee and some of Baker, Davison and McCoy. The Brigadeer was a complete badass and he was one of my favorite characters. Now because of our modern outlook on military, we're supposed to look down on UNIT? That's not fair. I'd like to see more of UNIT and in a more positive light
@doctorwho87 Well, to be fair the Brigadeer has been mentioned and even was in this episode as someone the Doctor would really like to have around just then. The commanding officer present took no offense and agreed he was great, but was being kept busy elsewhere. And in the specials between these newest two seasons UNIT has proven themselves to be quite the force to be reckoned with. So maybe they're going back towards that more positive role. We can hope anyway, yeah?
Watch the scene, my friend :) I admit, I agree'd with your feelings, but this 1:30 seconds of pure epicness really cast UNIT in a positive light. Even the Doctor was showing respect for them, which he should have been giving the entire two episodes.
@Cocarat206 You're right about that, this scene is an awesome display of what U.N.I.T. was and still is capable of doing. I admit I was a bit quick to judge the New Series on that point because I remember Christopher Eccleston's Doctor in "Aliens of London" describing U.N.I.T. as "good people." Here's hoping for the good future of U.N.I.T.
@doctorwho87 thank you, the brigader was amazing, 100 times better than this idiot of a replacement, the brigadier at least sometimes listened to the doctor, the brigadier, captain mike yates and sargeant benton should have been here, they pratically made unit :)

Yes UNIT were the focus back then but even before Pertwee came along The Doctor was resoundingly anti-military and remained so during his time at UNIT. whatsmore he chewed out UNIT, the Birg more specifically during one story (i think it was the Silurians). Hes liked the people but not necesarrily thier methods and the attitude is more what UNIT is THESE days that its gotten worse. the Brig himself says so in SJA
