Front Porch Soul is what they call it. If you're from Florida, you should get it. If you don't, you need to listen closer. I saw Mofro play Magfest one year. JJ put down an entire bottle of Maker's Mark before the show was over. This is one of those bands that sounds just as good live as they do in the studio. Keep on playin' JJ!
JJ Grey & Mofro, are a bunch of bad assed down to earth flat out great musicians. Humble guys who play their hearts out, and give the fans what they've come to hear. Great albums too. Check out their live recordings on Archive.org....great stuff, come February...we'll have seen 'em 9 times in less than 3 years. Hooked.
This is what keeps me going and not completely losing faith in today's music. And call me selfish ..but if everyone doesn't get it...then it's there loss. But my ipod will be blasting this for years to come.
And if I had straight hair I’d want it curly, if I had short hair I’d want it long. And if I had no hair, I’d want some. There’s a scientific equation in there somewhere... and I think Maker’s Mark is the answer. For this, for this long song [?]. Anyhow--I thought about home and when I got home from London home was gone, so... I’ll let the harp tell the story.
I don’t give a shit about the Empire State Building, I like the people in New York and I like just the vibe in new york, I don’t give a damn about the buildin’. Where I live there ain’t a whole lotta people, so its uh, heh, its all wilderness. For how much longer I don’t know. I wrote this song in London, England, I was there for a long time and, and I love London but, I couldn’t wait to get back home. Just because home is home, ya know. Now I can’t wait to get back to London.
This song is called “Lochloosa.” I see some of y’all familiar. Now if y’all keep listenin’ we gon’ keep on comin’ back to Los Angeles. I love where I live. I hope you do. If you live in California you live in a beautiful place. I don’t give a damn about “H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D” on the side of a mountain, that don’t mean shit to me. All that matters is the people in the place, the real things, ya know. And I ain’t bad--I ain’t badmouthin’ nobody, i’m just sayin’.
i know how ya feel buddy, moving back after a 4 year hiatus in Baltimore, the few times i've visited in between i can barely recognize the place, hopefully the next generation will have something to enjoy.....
I am from Jacksonville,Fla so I know where these guys come from, not to many miles from where I live, they are so aswome, so real, I know every thing they are singing about!
I've been jamming out to these guys since before they got their first CD out. JJ's mom & dad came to my family's pharmacy here in Jacksonville and dropped off their demo, back when it was just "Mofro"
Since then, I've seen 'em live about 6 or 7 times.
These guys never fail to have an awesome show. Whether it be at a bar, Freebird live, or a Suwannee river fest, Mofro is amazing!
Bound4NH, Glad you found JJ and Company. One of the best bands around but you better get ready to stay up late when they come to town. They will rip it up for three hours. AMAZING!!!!!!
@Bound4NH Same here.. Heard "Everything Good Is Bad" today on the radio and found them singing it here on You Tube. And his voice is really good! I like this band because it's a real band. You can tell they are all about music and nothing else.
@Bound4NH If you want a special treat, watch JJ's protege' Almira Fawn at 11yo. /watch?v=C7BLVYSbHY0&feature=related and see her at 14yo here /watch?v=HIBrIHBS67g
Seen MOFRO so many times and when JJ gets on the ivory, well that's my favorite. Sad that the last several times I have seen him, he's kept the dust cover on. However, still love them and get going for the next chance. Preach on JJ.
POSSIBLY one of the most soulful people on the face of the earth. If you don't get it - you never will. The rest of us will groooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove with JJ>
I was lucky enough to see JJ Grey and Mofro in September in St. Augustine at the Blackwater Sol Review and that was the best show I've been to. I also love the song "Lochlossa", because I've be to the town of Lochlossa and I know the meaning of the song. I'm home sick and I'm proud to say that I'm a Florida Cracker. I'm also proud to say that Lochlossa reminds me of the one stop light town that I'm from in Lake County, Florida. The town I'm from is good ole' Umatilla.
lol @ your comment about Umatilla. I'm in Grand Island (2 miles west of the fairgrounds on CR44), where technically, we don't even have a stoplight! The company I work for leases JJ & Mofro their buses. I should've gone to see that show you're talking about, but never did. I most definitely will be going next time!
as time goes on the crowd gets better at singing this with him. last night we did it as an impromptu encore with hardly any instruments. the fever is spreading.
I love Mofro and was just checking around and saw this. I've been to 3 of their shows and it looks to me like JJ was a little more pickled during this show, but I don't give a damn, I LOVED IT!!!
As a transplant from Alabama and a long time Floridian, I'm still a homespun boy. This soulful and lyrical mastery gives me a returned since of home, a place where I know I belong and will, in my heart, never leave. I'm a Cracka, and my momma threw up her share of grits a ho cakes. This white boy JJ has captured something that's soulful and genuine I find myself replaying Mofro melodies in my head in the midst of Miami chaos. THERAPY, is what it is..
JJ & Mofro, I hear ya man! I've been home sick for 11yrs. Anyways, its great to hear someone these days with their own style and sound. Thanks for putting FL music back on the map...SSgt Jeremy Hickman (Lake County FL)
these guys are true americana! i lived in jax beach, fl for several years and was lucky enough to see mofro several times in their "home town". always a great time!
Austin & Seattle shows were great. I see he didn't disappoint in L.A. I am convinced he doesn't play a bad set. I appreciate this time in his career. Honest, raw, and savage. Gotta see JJ Grey to understand.
JJ Grey and Mofro opened for Jonny Lang at EQC! OMG this guy was an awesome entertainer and the songs all JAMMED. JJ you ROCK!

anyone else notice he drinks about 3 drinks dearing his little segue or speach?
avettfan74 2 years ago
Ummm... he takes a few sips from a half-empty Corona, then takes one sip from a plastic cup (and hints that it's Maker's Mark).
Hardly the same as drinking "about 3 drinks".
I can't believe I never heard of this band before yesterday. I've been listening to and watching everything I can find. They're awesome!
