"Like all Soviet films the movie is stunningly dull"..... seems like you don't know much about Soviet cinema. I don't think that Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Eisenstein, Alexander Dovzhenko or Vsevolod Pudovkin made "dull movies".
I think this film was ahead of its time. The only other film I can think of that compares with this was the 1957 film Forbidden Planet which addressed the issue of our own technology becoming our downfall.
@heatflash888 you're acting as if the russians were the only ones that ever did such a thing, majority people have killed, raped, and enslaved, minority people all throughout history. The British did it in india, australia, and canda. the germans did it to the jews. The romans did to everyone that was and wasn't roman and the americans did it to african people in africa and in america, and are still doing it in third world countries around the world. they just call it a "cooperation/factory".
@ChromodynamicGirl is living in poverty because the US cooperations enslave them into factory workers only so fat fucks like you can enjoy their happy meal. Keep telling your self that you have a great government the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA will fall someday!!!
@ChromodynamicGirl how the fuck would you know what their society was organized around, you're probably just some american smart ass that listens to the bullshit propaganda that is taught in american schools: oh and by the way you think that your society doesn't have slavery theft and murder, you are all slaves, you talk so much bull shit about freedoms when your only freedom is to buy what ever bullshit wallmart offers, and you might not see physical slavery in your country but half the world
@Shufei Equal opportunities? Yes they gave equal opportunities to the 60 million russian men women and children they murdered, opportunities for death. Communism was just a way for one political elite to take over from another and enjoy the good life at the expense of everybody else, even if it meant murdering people so they could steal their money, dachas and rape their women
Sounds like Amerikkka to me, you must have your countries confused. The casualties of wars against imperialist capitalists resulted in the death of millions..That says nothing about communism as a system or the soviet union..In the height of it's power it never had as many prisoners as America has today..both actual figures and per capita, America is the prison terrorist state par excellence. Makes USSR look like mother teresa.
milwaukee-ex cold warrior and hardliner...put a gun to my head with only 2 choices...i would rather be a commie cosmonaut than an islamic in birka!...the ussr an evil empire did good things during the space race!
This movie had a lot of accidental insights into the Soviet way of doing things...the way both the launch and later in-flight maneuvers are handled entirely by ground control, for instance, instead of from the ship. Also note the (non-sexy, middle-aged) woman in charge--try finding that in a 50s American film!
How I wish it wasn't true. Sometimes I wish that old Soviet Union was back to keep this country in check and to make the lefties in this country go over there.
Oh, those wacky socialists, with their radical, dangerous ideas like equal opportunities for women and minorities... Why, it's un-American!
Seriously, though, you're quite right. I'm enjoying these clips of a world-that-might-have-been, and in some ways we are headed backwards from. Knowing some of those old communist idealists first-hand, there were good things to what they did. It would be sad to lose the gains they made.
@Shufei Err, at least in the Soviet military, minorities were treated like garbage and had a glass ceiling. Almost all officers were Russian, almost all NCOs were Slavic, and Central Asians were abused horribly.
Everyone in Russia knew just how well trampled ethnic minorities took to running Soviet-style bureaucracies on their own!
And indeed, Womyn Everywhere would already be running the World! All they had to do is adapt to those enticing, Cold War clothing styles (and get their unibrows activated)!
In some foreign made movies, to ensure they would be shown in the USA, the actors read their dialogue, in english, off of phonetically spelled cue-cards to ensure acurate dubbing. Also, the American distributor of the movie would shoot "fill-in" scenes with American actors and edit them into the movie. Two prime examples of this are the Danish monster movie "Reptillicus," and the "americanized" version of "Godzilla: King of the Monsters."
