  • ,.,.,.,.,.Judis got it going on 10,,Better then most you can hear it in her voice

  • Fantastic song, haunting on stage.

  • Your sick in the head.

  • Send In The Clowns

you dont need to they are already here the banks and brown the clown and new labour riping us all off al;l best from yorkshire england

  • Judi Dench singing this on Pebble mill at 1, will never leave me, so moved by her perfomance, it made me cry ,she is so talented and its a memory that always sticks as my Late Mum telephoned me just after Pebble Mill , to ask if i had seen Judy on Tv, So that song and Judy is so significant in my life

  • Something wrong my eyes I think. I can see nothing but a blur.

  • Dreadful footage/ AMAZING performance. Those who say this song was written for a "non singer" are right. I saw this production twice in London, Brilliant and this was one of the most amazing scenes ever seen on the London stage. When Melvin Bragg did the Judy Dench special on The Southbank Show they worked the programme around this performance and ended the show with it. When you consider the work she's done on stage, film and tv it gives you some idea of the esteem this performance is held in.

  • Everyone needs to watch the youtube video of Stephen Sondheim teaching the song he wrote to young musical students. Then you can see the way the composer wanted the song to be sung.

  • it would be okay if she could sing, judy dench is a fabulous actress, this is well what can i say at the best crap

  • I only understood this song when I heard it sung by a non singer and Dame Judi does it best.

  • This 'song' is not meant to be sung, it's meant to be acted. A smooth singing voice would take away all the meaning.

  • @mogoot I'm old fashioned. I prefer to hear a song sung by someone who has a voice and who can sing. And really, I thought that was the point of a musical. This is why we have the garbage today which is called rap music.

  • This song must be acted at least as much as, if not more than, it needs to be sung.

Sarah Vaughan and Judy Collins are much better singers and musicians than Judi Dench, yet her version is just as good as either of theirs. And Streisand, much as I don't like her, does it brilliantly because she is a singing actress as good as any.

  • she's such a great actress. didn't realize she could sing too. she is great! i love the piece. especially the piano part.

  • I never pictured the song to be sung with such bitterness and heartbreak. It's not a heartbroken ballad, it's a song of looking back at what good thing she let pass by her, and regretting, hating herself, because she knows she's made a terrible mistake. It's not that she's pissed at Fredrik, but she's disappointed with herself. It's more of an ironic laugh than anything.

  • I never had, either, but perhaps there's more than 1 way to sing a great song. Sometimes this is bittersweet, or melancholy, or bemused, or all of the above. But heartbreak is entirely valid, too--it's about wisdom gained too late, about the price of not knowing yourself, of being a fool. She's middle-aged, she knows she'll never have her true love, and yet her career suddenly seems meaningless, too. This was a revelatory, devastating performance.

  • dude, what you just described is more than a little heartbreaking

  • What's more devestating and heartbreaking than feeling deep regret and pain at terrible mistakes. Seriously. This is another way of approaching those feelings portrayed in this song.

  • This song was written to be sung exactly like this. It was written for Glynis Johns who wasn't a singer. Judy does it to perfection.

  • Her singing is very moving!

  • Beautiful. She is such a brilliant actress. Perhaps next to Zarah Leander's performance, this is the best.

  • lol :-) that´s a good one

  • beautifull... she gives meaning to the song.

  • Never knew she could sing!

  • this is the best i have ever heard great

  • Judi Dench is great! Pity the camera quality isn't better because that'd make this so much more intense.

  • FYO - Dench was the original Sally Bowles in the OLC of "Cabaret", and was supposed to be the original Grizabella in the OLC of "Cats" - she's done a fair bit of Music Theatre in her time... People should really do their research on here, hehe!!!

  • what are you doing taking a camera into a show and filming it illegally?

  • Answer: Preserving it for posterity.

If that is illegal, so much the poorer for legalities.

  • well the obvious answer is: where would we all be if everyone broke laws just because they didn't like them?

  • Answer: In Congress.

  • hahaha

  • Or president.

  • Right. Replace congress with 'The White House.'

  • this song was wrote for someone who cannot sing it. It is an emotional, head thought, spiraling down to a bit of a depressed individual. Damr Judy dies it justice, I live it.

  • Krealle, this song was written for Glynis Johns, who had a very limited range. It was written for her, and Sondheim knew full well of her abilities. This song can be sung by someone who has a beautiful voice, but it was originally written for someone with a limited range.

  • I saw this at the National in '96! And I'm lucky enough to have bought the cd too :-)

    Judy rules.

  • Oh WOW! Dame Judi, that was spiffing.. (sob)

  • The lady sings with wonderful expression. Beautiful!

  • Sondheim did say something, watch his videos explaining the song, he states this ISN'T some soaring ballad it's about regret; he used short little wistful phrases. Dame Judi can act circles around Babbra in any role on any day, and that isn't opinion it's simple fact. This song is sung the way it should be acted, perfectly! Brava Dame Dench!!!

  • Singing something live in this type of setting demands much more emotion than singing in a recording studio - if anyone can put emotion and passion into a song when it requires it - it's Barbra - Stephen Sondheim was there whilst she was recording it - i'm pretty sure that if he thought it ''criminally ignorant of the real meaning'' he would have said something - he had plenty of opportunity as you can see in the Making of TBA.!! But we are all entitled to our own opinions!

  • Barbra?? Ugly??? I think someone needs a pair of glasses!!!! Barbra's version is much better with the additional lyrics written especially by Sondheim for Barbra's 'The Broadway Album'.

  • Even without being able to see it, this is remarkably better than Barbra's version, which was criminally ignorant of the song's real meaning.

  • Judi is wonderful in her own right and doesn't need comparing to anyone else. But calling anything sung by Barbra Streisand ignorant, is about as ignorant a remark one can make. And probably made by a complete Nobody, which makes it criminal too.

  • This is very good, but does not hold a candle to Sarah or Barbra.

  • BARBRA ITS AN UGLY WITCH

  • this is my favorite version

  • sarita - Do you enjoy Judana Dench?

  • yes , i like her as an actress who is performing this song ,she is so natural and doesnot need to be a beauty queen

  • sarita - Have you partaken of her performance in The Queen?

  • I think Judy Dench's performances of this song (any of them!) are definitive... it sounds absolutely beautiful. Emotional and understated and absolutely wonderful. It's a pity there are few other people who can manage the song like this.

  • Glenn Close is heaps better

  • In terms of who has a better singing voice, you're probably right. In terms of who actually performs the song better, not a chance. Dench makes it sound like it's happening to her, whereas Close, who sings nicely, sounds like she's reading it from a cue card to me.

  • I agree!!! I wish I could see Dench on stage more than either the big or small screen. She is a real artist. This is the first time I've seen or heard her do musical drama.

  • Hello. Please listen to Grazyna Auguscik version. I think she's amazing vocalist

  • Her performance is the first time I've really understood the song.

  • It really is a truly, utterly gorgeous performance

  • Glenn is better

  • formidable !

  • Judi Dench is the only one who ever made me cry when singing this. I still cry every time.

  • Oh,I thought I was the only one to react like that!I saw her perform this at the Oscars.THE best performance of this song ever.

  • Thank you for posting this video. I'm thankful we get to hear her beautiful rendition of this timeless song.

  • The Dame is amazing!

  • thank you i love her preformance she gives it so much of her emotion

  • I absolutely love Judi Dench.

  • Her Hey Mr. Producer is BRILLIANT!

  • Wow. Proof you don't need a great voice to give a great performance. Thanks. It gave me goosebumps.

  • She sang with so much feelings!

  • this song's lyrics are so beautiful but the register is so low, it never sounds very pretty, at least to me

  • Wasn't Hermine Gingold the first to sing it? I believe that's my first memory of it... sort of a Carol Channing type contralto profundo... right?

  • I want to say Glynis Johns...but I can't be certain.

  • You're right... and what a find! Just discovered the lovely actress behind that name that I'd never connected with her. She's a delight in "While you were Asleep," with Sandra Bullock and a number of other luminous artists.

  • She was amazing in Mary Poppins too :)

  • I was at the show- it was amazing

  • Good song. Video quality is poor, but it's good to listen to.

  • Lovely ot listen as a great reminder of an even more special night!!

  • Really bad video. But amazing Dame Judi Dench singing, in an amazing song.
