Judi Dench singing this on Pebble mill at 1, will never leave me, so moved by her perfomance, it made me cry ,she is so talented and its a memory that always sticks as my Late Mum telephoned me just after Pebble Mill , to ask if i had seen Judy on Tv, So that song and Judy is so significant in my life
Dreadful footage/ AMAZING performance. Those who say this song was written for a "non singer" are right. I saw this production twice in London, Brilliant and this was one of the most amazing scenes ever seen on the London stage. When Melvin Bragg did the Judy Dench special on The Southbank Show they worked the programme around this performance and ended the show with it. When you consider the work she's done on stage, film and tv it gives you some idea of the esteem this performance is held in.
Everyone needs to watch the youtube video of Stephen Sondheim teaching the song he wrote to young musical students. Then you can see the way the composer wanted the song to be sung.
@mogoot I'm old fashioned. I prefer to hear a song sung by someone who has a voice and who can sing. And really, I thought that was the point of a musical. This is why we have the garbage today which is called rap music.
This song must be acted at least as much as, if not more than, it needs to be sung.
Sarah Vaughan and Judy Collins are much better singers and musicians than Judi Dench, yet her version is just as good as either of theirs. And Streisand, much as I don't like her, does it brilliantly because she is a singing actress as good as any.
I never pictured the song to be sung with such bitterness and heartbreak. It's not a heartbroken ballad, it's a song of looking back at what good thing she let pass by her, and regretting, hating herself, because she knows she's made a terrible mistake. It's not that she's pissed at Fredrik, but she's disappointed with herself. It's more of an ironic laugh than anything.
I never had, either, but perhaps there's more than 1 way to sing a great song. Sometimes this is bittersweet, or melancholy, or bemused, or all of the above. But heartbreak is entirely valid, too--it's about wisdom gained too late, about the price of not knowing yourself, of being a fool. She's middle-aged, she knows she'll never have her true love, and yet her career suddenly seems meaningless, too. This was a revelatory, devastating performance.
What's more devestating and heartbreaking than feeling deep regret and pain at terrible mistakes. Seriously. This is another way of approaching those feelings portrayed in this song.
FYO - Dench was the original Sally Bowles in the OLC of "Cabaret", and was supposed to be the original Grizabella in the OLC of "Cats" - she's done a fair bit of Music Theatre in her time... People should really do their research on here, hehe!!!
this song was wrote for someone who cannot sing it. It is an emotional, head thought, spiraling down to a bit of a depressed individual. Damr Judy dies it justice, I live it.

the song was written for the highest quality of singer, not someone who can't sing it. I can go to any high school or college and find someone who can sing this beautifully and melodically- it's much more difficult to find someone who can sing the song without a choir teacher's perfection to portray pain and heartbreak.
Krealle, this song was written for Glynis Johns, who had a very limited range. It was written for her, and Sondheim knew full well of her abilities. This song can be sung by someone who has a beautiful voice, but it was originally written for someone with a limited range.
Sondheim did say something, watch his videos explaining the song, he states this ISN'T some soaring ballad it's about regret; he used short little wistful phrases. Dame Judi can act circles around Babbra in any role on any day, and that isn't opinion it's simple fact. This song is sung the way it should be acted, perfectly! Brava Dame Dench!!!
Singing something live in this type of setting demands much more emotion than singing in a recording studio - if anyone can put emotion and passion into a song when it requires it - it's Barbra - Stephen Sondheim was there whilst she was recording it - i'm pretty sure that if he thought it ''criminally ignorant of the real meaning'' he would have said something - he had plenty of opportunity as you can see in the Making of TBA.!! But we are all entitled to our own opinions!
Barbra?? Ugly??? I think someone needs a pair of glasses!!!! Barbra's version is much better with the additional lyrics written especially by Sondheim for Barbra's 'The Broadway Album'.
Judi is wonderful in her own right and doesn't need comparing to anyone else. But calling anything sung by Barbra Streisand ignorant, is about as ignorant a remark one can make. And probably made by a complete Nobody, which makes it criminal too.
I think Judy Dench's performances of this song (any of them!) are definitive... it sounds absolutely beautiful. Emotional and understated and absolutely wonderful. It's a pity there are few other people who can manage the song like this.
In terms of who has a better singing voice, you're probably right. In terms of who actually performs the song better, not a chance. Dench makes it sound like it's happening to her, whereas Close, who sings nicely, sounds like she's reading it from a cue card to me.
I agree!!! I wish I could see Dench on stage more than either the big or small screen. She is a real artist. This is the first time I've seen or heard her do musical drama.
You're right... and what a find! Just discovered the lovely actress behind that name that I'd never connected with her. She's a delight in "While you were Asleep," with Sandra Bullock and a number of other luminous artists.

This 'song' is not meant to be sung, it's meant to be acted. A smooth singing voice would take away all the meaning.

what are you doing taking a camera into a show and filming it illegally?

Answer: Preserving it for posterity.
If that is illegal, so much the poorer for legalities.
