trout are a species of fish that fall into a category of fish that contain pin bones. Tuna, whitefish, and salmon are also in this category.
This method is great for eating trout in the 1/2lb class and under. I find if you cook smaller trout, the pin bones normally dissolve. In the 1/2lb + trout, the pin bones will not dissolve and thus they have to be removed. I usually end up filleting fish over 1/2lb and removing the pin bones. In trout over 5lbs, I usually take a pair of pliers to them.
Neat. I discovered this method by accident when I picked the cooked fish up by the tail. I was considering butterflying the trout prior to cooking it, but I think this is easier.
We usually eat it with the skin on. It's coated with flour and seasoning salt, so it tastes ok. Kind of crispy, very mild. If you don't like it, it usually peels off in almost one piece.
We're planning on going back up this Sept. and will have several new videos to post. Can't wait to try and hook that big one that got away last time.
Thanks for the great comments. These are smaller trout @ 1lb. We do cook them first, sometime pan fried or wrapped in foil and BBQ'ed . We then de-bone them.
Oh,,, I need to mention that my younger brother didn't understand your video and he commented about deboning. The trout in this video are cooked. He thought you ment to create fillets. We never fliilet fish unless is is a 12 plus pounder. We were raised that people fillet fish are lazy! Anyway, again great video!
Great video man! I will be over at the White River Arkansas fishing in about two to three weeks. I hope to catch a mess of rainbows for a fish fry back here in Texas with some friends.
@REGreenTeam White River off the beaver dam is one of the most excellent places in the country to catch rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout! I'm about an hour away and have been going there since I was a kid :)
method on trout and it works great. But I was still finding some small bones in the thicker pieces of meat. Almost like bones that were free floating in the meat. Like ones that were not hooked to anything else. Is this normal for trout or did I do something wrong? Thanks.
There are 5 or 6 bones on each side about 2/3 the way down from the mouth that are free-floating. Take a tine of your fork and just run it along the bottom half of the length of the body from the inside. Make sure you pull the fins out.
Just made two whole trout for dinner earlier with some lemon and parsley, and was spitting out bones the entire meal. Wish I had seen this sooner!

I never have understood why people debone or fillea a fish. Why not just go buy some fish sticks at the quickstop. Don't be a lazy eater !

Seriously? because if it's not seriously I guess it's funny but if it's not well.. seriously?
