Oh, thank you for uploading this. Not so much because of TK being on it -- although that's fun, too -- but this is the FIRST version of the show I ever saw. I ESPECIALLY remember that giant orange clock. But, I have never been able to convince anyone who didn't see it that it exists.
The reason the show moved from New York City to Montreal was that it was a cost-cutting measure.
And the reason Narz left the show in 1972 was because the show's budget did not include his personal travel expenses (meaning he had to pay for his own airline tickets from Los Angeles to Montreal, and vice-versa).
@Lehnerd57 That's Clayton "Bud" Colliyer. He was the original voice of Superman on Mutual Radio and the first few Fleischer Brothers/Paramount-Famous "Superman" cartoons, both in the 1940's. He also hosted G-T's original "Winner Take All" in the late '40's before "Beat the Clock".
Montreal? That would be an interesting to place film a game show. I know they do that for movies sometimes, but TV is interesting. Wonder what was behind that reasoning.
The outfits that those two lady assistants were wearing looks like stargate uniforms from Star Trek with the dress hemlines to the humps and the black pantyhose. Jack was the Captain Kirk and Tom was the Dr.Spock hehe
I think this was the only G-T show to use live organ accompaniment...in fact, there are no clean "master" copies of the theme cues, although music director Dick Hyman did have the foresight to record his performances live in the studio during a 1974 taping.
What I'd like to know is what was the working mechanism for the clock. It worked the same as the 1950's clock - someone behind cranked another hand to the desired time, then a spring mechanism worked it until someone stopped it. But how were the lights wired so they turned on when time was set, then turned off as the clocked counted down. Must have been an internal hand tripping switches?
Does anybody know if this episode here was from before or after production of this show moved from New York to Montreal. I know Jack Narz was host for a about a year in Montreal, then Gene Wood took over.
From the early days of Game Show Network when they had a great schedule. Thanks for posting this clip. Jack and Tom were two great hosts and Tom is from Louisville, Ky where I now live.
I think this was the first game show that I ever watched as a kid. Unlike some programs, "Beat the Clock" could be appreciated by a child since you didn't really need to be knowledgeable about anything. It was alll fun and games, as far as I was concerned back then.
I forgot how deep Jack Narz's voice was. He was one of the best, though I liked his brother a little bit better.
To answer your question sugarbear522, that was 20th Century Fox that distributed this season, but the following season with Gene Wood moved to star of this incarnation of BtC was distributed by Firestone Syndication Sales with a new set, clock and the cash board became red.
oh crap. i think i have part of my answer: at the beginning of this clip narz seems to mention kennedy was already doing you don't say! and soon another show called it's your bet. sorry, just worry about the year! :)
do you know what yr this was from?? because it basically blew my mind to see tk not wearing any glasses! :) and what show(s) was kennedy doing at the time, if you know?
actually i think the 1st time kennedy did the glasses thing was around the era of split second; also see "related videos" on the right side of this page for the clip "split second tom kennedy part 1."
actually it was probably during the era of split second (1973-75); at the same time he'd just started name that tune; and sometimes he'd be seen wearing them and sometimes not.
even for his final show, wordplay, i checked out publicity stills in which the glasses are gone! maybe contacts? lasik?

This version resembles "The Bozo the Clown Show" with the organ music and the psychadelic settings.

Easy answer: GSN has never aired any New York episodes. By virtue of a GSN logo on the screen, we can deduce that this is in Canada. :-)

Thanks for the info. I didn't start getting satelitte tv until sometime in 2002, so I wouldn't have known otherwise, even though I do live in Canada.

and i just checked out wikipedia that only the 1st season of btc was produced in nyc (1969-70) then operations were moved to montreal from 70-74.

what shocks me is that jack narz and tom kennedy have equally awesome voices . . . 2 of the best in the biz.

You got me curious Adam: If this was in 71, what network was this on? If it was in syndication, who distributed it?
sugarbear522 3 years ago
This was in syndication, sugarbear522. I watched it on WPIX-TV in NY when I was a kid. I think it was on weeknights at 7 PM.
EarlSnohomish 3 years ago
Anyone know where it was shown in Chicago?
sugarbear522 3 years ago
I just found out that it was on at 6:30 PM on WPIX, not 7 PM.

Tom wore the exact same outfit on his appearance on Celebrity Bowling (can be seen on Youtube).

i actually checked out that celebrity bowling clip a minute ago to see if this was true. it was! i am totally floored.

It was 1971 and TK was doing It's Your Bet at the time of his guest appearance on BtC.

One year later, he would begin hosting "Split Second."

Tom often hosted more than one show at a time, so he was certainly busy. No wonder he is retired now; he could certainly use the rest. :)

I don't think Tom Kennedy started wearing glasses until the mid-Seventies.
