It's a misconception that serial killers are psychopaths or are sociopaths... most serial killers are incredibly frustrated people who have stopped developing at a young age. Their fantasies and imagination take over their lives. It's no wonder that most kill for the first time in their late 20s.... their fantasy world and frustration just bursts into reality.

I don't have any statistics on it but I would say that most serial killers are psychopaths though. Most of the ones that I have read about do have the main characteristics (e.g. Juvenile delinquency, criminal versatility) of psychopathy, Ted Bundy included.
I disagree. A "psychopath" is someone who is genetically less inclined to feel positive emotions.. love, satisfaction etc. Psychopaths also have a deep need for powerful sources of stimulation and tend to lose interest in things very fast. I think that many serial killers are simply badly adjusted, frustrated individuals who retreat into a dream / fantasy world. You are not a psychopath just because you share a few of the associated traits.
Psychopaths are pretty rare. And not all psychopaths become murderers... some psychopaths take the less spectacular route: abusive bosses at work, sadistic teachers etc... they find interest in non-violent forms of humiliation and power. Sociopaths are more common. Sociopaths are people who "harden" and become selfish due to their experiences in life or associating with criminal sub-cultures. I'd say that psychopaths make up about 5% of the prison population and sociopaths make up about 60%.
Sociopath is such a generic term as well. You can have some of the traits, but not be a full blown sociopath. Someone who becomes involved in organized crime at a young age for example. In any event, sociopaths are the nurture side (negative lifestyle and experiences) of the coin, and psychopaths are the genetic/nature side of the coin. Full blown psychopaths are extremely rare. And some psychopaths actually adhere to society and don't get in trouble: soldiers, pilots, teachers, bosses etc.

It sounds as if the differences between psychopathy and sociopathy that you are describing are more differences between psychopathy/sociopathy and an antisocioal personality. I think most people who fall into the sociopathic or psychopathic categories--or who just share a few of the traits--are really just showing symptoms of a life of crime and were made that way by their actions, experiences and involvement in anti-social activities.

No one thing causes a murder to happen. Porn may be PART of the problem, but then you also have to account for the parents, social factors, mental illness, etc... In the end, no one individual symptom of a serial killer guarantees that person will kill. For example, bed-wetting is a common variable found in most serial killers. Doesn't mean wetting the bed equates to being a serial killer.

The doc. that interviewed him published a book about the interview. Life on the Edge. The book contains a lot more than the interview, mainly tips on how to lead a christian life in this world. Really interesting interview though. Interesting tips as well. Book is pretty old though. I've had it since forever and is now re-reading it.

It's a misconception that serial killers are psychopaths or are sociopaths... most serial killers are incredibly frustrated people who have stopped developing at a young age. Their fantasies and imagination take over their lives. It's no wonder that most kill for the first time in their late 20s.... their fantasy world and frustration just bursts into reality.

I don't have any statistics on it but I would say that most serial killers are psychopaths though. Most of the ones that I have read about do have the main characteristics (e.g. Juvenile delinquency, criminal versatility) of psychopathy, Ted Bundy included.

I disagree. A "psychopath" is someone who is genetically less inclined to feel positive emotions.. love, satisfaction etc. Psychopaths also have a deep need for powerful sources of stimulation and tend to lose interest in things very fast. I think that many serial killers are simply badly adjusted, frustrated individuals who retreat into a dream / fantasy world. You are not a psychopath just because you share a few of the associated traits.

Psychopaths are pretty rare. And not all psychopaths become murderers... some psychopaths take the less spectacular route: abusive bosses at work, sadistic teachers etc... they find interest in non-violent forms of humiliation and power. Sociopaths are more common. Sociopaths are people who "harden" and become selfish due to their experiences in life or associating with criminal sub-cultures. I'd say that psychopaths make up about 5% of the prison population and sociopaths make up about 60%.

Sociopath is such a generic term as well. You can have some of the traits, but not be a full blown sociopath. Someone who becomes involved in organized crime at a young age for example. In any event, sociopaths are the nurture side (negative lifestyle and experiences) of the coin, and psychopaths are the genetic/nature side of the coin. Full blown psychopaths are extremely rare. And some psychopaths actually adhere to society and don't get in trouble: soldiers, pilots, teachers, bosses etc.

It sounds as if the differences between psychopathy and sociopathy that you are describing are more differences between psychopathy/sociopathy and an antisocioal personality. Psychopaths make up about 1% of the population which i suppose is rare if you compare it to disorders such as bipolar which makes up 5% of the general population.

I believe that most serial killers are psychopaths with sadistic and sexually violent desires. A psychopath's lack of conscience and impulsivity would make it a lot harder for them to suppress these desires than it would be for a non-psychopathic person with violent fantasies.

That's why there is such a lack of clarity in the terms. Some psychologists have tried to distinguish psychopathy and sociopathy but they haven't done the reasearch to make the distinction concrete. What I'm saying is that if all serial killers were tested using the Psychopathy Check List, most of them would be considered psychopaths.

Evil from birth, or genetic "evil", is a very rare thing. I think most people who fall into the sociopathic or psychopathic categories--or who just share a few of the traits--are really just showing symptoms of a life of crime and were made that way by their actions, experiences and involvement in anti-social activities.

No one thing causes a murder to happen. Porn may be PART of the problem, but then you also have to account for the parents, social factors, mental illness, etc... In the end, no one individual symptom of a serial killer guarantees that person will kill. For example, bed-wetting is a common variable found in most serial killers. Doesn't mean wetting the bed equates to being a serial killer.
