I am about to build something like this for my kid. He is getting the polar express o gauge for Christmas. Your's looks great! What materials did you use as I am concerned about the straitness of the boards. I think this design would be perfect for my son's room. Thanks!!!
Can you give me an idea on how you ran the power, and the bedside controller. LOVES this setup, and going to try and do it myself. How did you plan it out?
Terribly coincidental, but I spent the last three weeks designing a double-HO wall layout that looks extremely close to yours. That makes me feel comfortable as yours is very aesthetically pleasing and I know my design will work. Great work!
This is well-done. Some setups look ratty. They maximize the train but do little to make the shelving/support look decent. This is done well-enough to assume that the shelves were part of the house. Great work. I will be doing the same when I build mine.
The controls for the train are on a bedside table (right at kids' level). The kids love it. Besides, they have other train toys to play with that aren't at 7 feet.
@mapugh73 I have one that used to go around my house that I put a piece of electrical tape over the last 1/4 of the transformer and put a piece of sheet copper over that and let it touch the 3/4 mark element of the transformer. Taped the edges so as not to cut power accidentally. So no matter how fast they try to crank it, the train only goes 3/4 speed. But I also have some elevation issues with the not-so-level crown molding NOT put in by me...
I am preparing to put the Hogwarts Express on the wall in the family office. This is one of my favorite videos because I have a closet in the same spot.
One thing I notice is the noise. I assume it is from all the coach car third-rail contacts. Does it bother you in a small room like that? I just want to know what to expect.
I am not sure precisely what is causing the noise (obviously wheel contact with the rails produces a lot of noise), but it is quite noisy. It's not the kind of thing you'd want running all the time in the background.
It is preferred to use a soft material under the tracks so dampen the sound, and change train if it has three rails to just a train with two rails, your layout is the perfect solution a dream I allways had as well.
cool concept bro, nice work!

Very nicely done! I built something similar but with HO scale.

I'll bet the kids find this a lot of fun to play with. No, wait, they can't get near it 7' off the ground. What a concept.

what would you do if it derailed?
21rossyboy21 2 years ago 5
In 1+ year of operation it has not derailed. It is a consideration, but with such rare occurance I don't worry about it.

Very nice. Like how you did the shelf support. I used 1/4 round and a couple shelf brackets on mine. Like yours better.

Great layout and beautiful job of carpentry! You've put a lot of work into your railroad. Good Job!

am building one similiar, what is the distance // depth in the corners - from the corner of the room to the outside edge of the curve?
I am using MDF, and routering the track into the wood itself, to help reduce noise.
- looks awesome.
thanks,

What if you were able to get two more of those same coaches to put on it?
supergamerbros 3 years ago
Could I not simply buy some more?
mapugh73 3 years ago
Well, it is an "O" gauge Polar Express. It would only be natural if it had 5 coaches like the real one.
supergamerbros 3 years ago
Was that the Polar Express?
mdt29827 3 years ago
Yep. Polar Express "O" guage.
