The lead channel on the Jet is totaly dependant on its preamp valve. I found an old Mullard that sounded great but experiment with it . Makes a massive difference.
I just got a Jet and the lead channel sounds like a BOSS DS-1....Is there a reason why it sounds so bad? The clean channel is PHENOMENAL though. Sounds amazing with my rockbox boiling point through it. But I still cant get over the crappy lead channel. Any ideas?
The Pro-14 has 2 programable remote switches. Using a TRS cable I just plug these into the foot switch input into the back of the amp I can now program the reverb and channel selection as part of the preset.
just curious how you were able to switch between amp channels using the gig rig... does the Jet's foot control not plug into the back of the amp? im confused how i'd do this with another channel-switching amp. thanks
TheGigRig Pro-14 has 2 remote switches. I programmed one to change the channel and the other to turn on and off the reverb. Its just a case of plugging into the footswitch input on the amp
thanksmate, really glad you enjoyed it. Growing up in the 80's i will spend the rest of my life trying to rid my playing of its influences. Never hand me a guitar with a Floyd Rose or you'll be in deep wang twang doodle. Tele forces me to keep it simple.
at first i thought this was going to be an 80's version of something but was quite impressed on the sound. great guitar playing, the drums arent overbearing at all. the bass couldve come up a bit but honestly this sounded great!
Wish you could have heard this setup at Aylesbury, by the way! Proper, full size sprung stage and the stage acoustics just made the thing sing- best amp tone i've ever had, and even made a few seasoned old pros stop in their tracks and re-admire the Jet all over again. I'm also running it with a 1x12 TR Signature amp (obtained second hand) also loaded with one of their 65's, in tandem with the combo's speaker, which gives lovely bandwidth and dispersion. I like it better with both speakers hooked up than one or the other (this was a recommendation from Joe at TR). After a period of experimentation, i'm pretty settled on my setup now, and its a perfect platform for pretty much all the music styles i have to cover (which is a few!).
Just an update on my experiences with this amp. Still absolutely loving it, firstly! I've done a bit of experimenting with tubes, and pretty much always running it with 6V6s in it now - plenty loud enough for even very large venues (played Aylesbury Civic Hall with it a couple of weeks ago, although it was miked) and seems a little more sorted and sweeter than with 6L6s. The current TungSol 6V6s are really nice (its what TR are shipping the Jet with now). Pt 2 above ....
I have the Two Rock J2 and I am thinking of getting the GigRig. Do you have it connected to the Fx loop or out front? How are you controlling the channels and reverb? Thanks, awesome video !
Hi there. I'm usint the remote switches in the back of TheGigRig Pro-14 to control the channels and reverb switching. I plug straight in and don't use the fx loop, always have done it like this and for me it works great.
I love your video. Great job and song. I bought a two-rock jet just recently(blonde 210) partially because of this video. I'm getting some great tones but is a little brittle and tinny on the high end as I turn the amp up. I was wondering if you had any suggestions. I believe it is loaded with the Patriot speakers and I think this is stock. I can't for the life of me get a good lead tone on the lead channel. Would you be willing to post what your settings were on this vid? Thanks
ho there. The input was at around 10 o'clock, channel 2 at around 12. the speakers are old celestions but i use it now with the Two-Rock speakers, one bright and one standard and i get very similar results, matbe a tad more headroom than these old celestions. The trick with the lead channel is to find the right valve, i found an old long plate mullard that sounds great, but went through 15 -20 to get the right one. makes all the difference
When you switched on that Love Pedal Eternity, WHOA!!! that was perfection to my ears. Could you please let me know what cabinet and speakers you were using and if the guitar have anything done to it? Any other information would be appreciated. I'm looking for something small and this is it. At least here sounds perfect. thanks, Charles
Hi Charles. Its the old white 'E' and one of my favourite pedals. I'm using a Bruno cab with a couple of old celestion speakers (g12-65s). I run the amp at 8 Ohms. Dpending on you valve choice you can get so much out of this amp, it's a real stunner.
Thanks, i belive If you get the tone right it is the vehicle to making great music. My life revolces around finding great tone, but it is the love of the music that drives it.
i know that stevie uses also a blackface super reverb...however a Dumble is too much expensive and rare amp...;-(...thank you for answer and your music is great!
I've always wanted one of these amps. I've never ever had the funds to actually purchase one however. I get so close then life takes over and no incredible tone for me lol
you gotta put this out on a CD.....brilliant! I figured this out on guitar by watching your video.....took awhile....great changes.....absolutely awesome....
Great stuff! Add in some vocals/lyrics, and you've got yourself a real hit there!....infectious groove and the emotions coming out of that guitar/amp are amazing!
Interesting to note that the bass and the drums don't cut through as much...not due to the playing/recording, but because there is so much harmonic complexity in the tone from the guitar. Wow!
A QUESTION:
How would this amp sound with humbuckers (I have a Gibson ES-355, along with an Godin LGX)
HI, thanks for the kind words. I don't use humbuckers myself but i have heard this amp with them and it sounds terrific. You need to tweak the EQ as you would on any amp, but as long as it's a good sounding guitar it will shine. That's the things about these amps, you actualy hear the character of the guitar. ( and the guy playing it!)
yeah, as its improvised i'd have to as well. The thing is that augmented chord. I may have to transcribe it though, just to work out what i was playing. Thanks mate
Ah, thanks mate. So, it's in the key of D. Starts with just the d and G+9 with a bit of mixolydian thrown in which means to say to make the 7th of the d minor but keep the major 3rd. Then the D becomes augmented when the blues driver kicks in so the 5th in D goes up a semitone(1 fret - a to Bb) but again keeps the major 3rd. It's a different colour that I really like. The riff is just a diminished blues thing - the riff was worked out previously. We decided on the chords but its all improvised.
Wow! yeah, Two-Rock, Divided by Thirteen, and Ark are my favorite amps right now... I sold the Marshall! lol Nice video though, you guys really rock! ~Peace
The cab is a Bruno 2x12 and the speakers are a couple of old Celestions. (55 and a 75 i think) I'm now using the Two-Rock speakers which after a good pounding sound really wonderful. I'd say alot more flexible than this configuration, but the old celestions do rock. Speaker choice is crucial.
Glad you enjoyed it, we'll need to do some more soon.
Hey Daniel, posted a few months ago, and just checking in. Still a great demo! I noticed from the thread of one of your other demos that you are Swindon-based. Me too! Two TR Jets in one average UK town- can't be that likely! You guys ever gig locally? If so i'd definitely swing by to see you in action... Cheers, Jef (still loving my own Jet...)
Great tones. In all of your videos you've done a great job of making your rig sound sweet... no matter the amp. You don't give your self enough credit for your guitar playing. What's the name of your band and do you have a CD out? I'd buy one.
Thanks Andreas. We've just done a bunch more clips so check those out as well, but I do love the Jet. It's such a sweet amp. The Tele is a Custom Shop NOS 63. I've beaten the hell ou of it though. But it's all stock.
Ah, thanks man. I'm tryin/workin hard to get it but I'm loving the journey. I just notice that I play so much better when I sound good. there's nothing like feeling really connected with your sound.
Cause my car's a hunk of junk! I've been accumulating this stuff over many years. The Jet is the most expensive thing I've ever bought, but a tradesman wants good tools if you know what I mean. It's out there with me three nights a week makin money
Apples and oranges for sure. Hiwatts are all about headroom. Two-Rock uses all the ingredients of classic amp tone such as output distortion and transformer grind to achieve its tone.
man being 16 means i have a longggg time to wait before i can even think about owning an amp that nice. but awesome tone and sweet playing... god i want that tone haha i'll settle with my blues junior for now though
Thanks Patrick. Just tell your parents if they buy you a Two-Rock that you won't need to receive a Christmas or Birthday present till 2037!!!! Blues Junior is a fine amp for a 16 yr old guitarist. Good core tone.
yeah, i'm a young blues junior player to, but check out webster chicagos. they're rare, but cheap and great sounding. Like a swart atomic space tone. I just bought one.
no offense to anyone, but for the money i would expect the amp to play itself. my tophat was comparitively cheap and has a very comparable timbre. sounds quite nice though.
Yep, they're expensive. But I for me it's ticks all the boxes. Of all the amps I've ever played (and that goes into the hundreds and hundreds)there's only one other that i feel as intuitively connected with as I do with the Two-Rock, and that is....(coming soon)
Expensive yes, but less expensive in the long run than buying and selling a whole bunch of other kit in search of 'that' tone more cheaply. The Jet is just in a different league to most amps, and I think once you've played one, the cost starts to make sense- mine is now with me for keeps. I've played some great gear along the way but nothing else i've experienced has the refined, dynamic balance & sheer 'life' of a TR, or plays so naturally under the fingers. These amps are genuinely stunning.
I'm always shocked by how cheap most guitar players are. Ask a violin player what they're going to pay for a mid-level violin. Why are Dumbles $15+k? Not just because SRV played one I can promise you. If your amp gives you the sound you want then be happy. I've been chasing tone since I was about 10yo and heard my first Brian May song on a jukebox c.1975 and when I find the tone I hear in my head I'll pay whatever they're asking for the amp if I can afford it.
Well you dont find too many rich guitar players, or at least ones with a degree in mechanical engineering. Im blown away by what nice violins and saxophones go for, but seem to go "well thats about right" when i see a handwired class A amp. come to think of it i dont know why. For 5000 you can either have a semester of engineering or a two rock. both can make you loads of money, its all in how you percieve what is VITAL to your lifestyle.(and then convincing the wife)
Thanks, that's very kind. I had Joe make the reverb switchable instead of the EQ bypass. I figured that the EQ sounds so great, why would I want to bypass it? So by using the remote switches in TheGigRig I can program what channel I want and the reverb staus per preset with no tap dancing. I'm using new Tung-Sols 6L6's. I like the sound of the 6V6's but I prefer the headroom with the 6L6's. Valve choice us VERY important with this amp. Try loads and see what you like.
Just thought you might like to know; now a proud Jet (combo) owner! MANY thanks for helping to set me on the right path (see comments above!). For the record, i am really digging her with Winged C or TAD WGC 6L6s (the small clear top ones) or Jan Phillips 6V6 valves. The JAN 6L6s are wonderful too, although noticably earlier breakup than others, which possibly defeats the object of the extra headroom... :)
Congrats man! I haven't tried the 6V6 thing which sound like fun. I'm really glad you're happy. It's a wonderful thing when you finaly find it. Keep me posted on any new discoveries and revelations you have with the amp. I've just started using two TR-65's with mine and must say that they sound fantastic. Also discovered some old Phillips 7581's for the power stage and they're incredible.
Cool- I'm currently just going through the diminutive combo's single TR-65- amazing tone from such a tiny box! However, a TR 2x12 cab will be next... Thinking of going for the TR-65 and TR-65R combined, which i know Joe recommends as a 'best of both worlds' option. Can't wait to open it up with a more spacious cab! But as for revelations, just idly strumming through this amp is still a revelation to me- never have i enjoyed the pleasures of simple playing so much before! Can't get bored of it!
I still feel excited everytime i play it. I've just started using a pair of Heritage G12-65's as well that sound fantastic. Once you sort out the valves and speakers you like in these amps, you have a friend for life.
yeh, but the custom shop pups are anything but stock. I've tried replacing them with loads of different ones, but always come back to these. They're really great
Thanks. There are more videos on the way. TheGigRig was my idea but the finished product is a collaboration between myself and my business partner. It's been refined over the past few years into a product that we're immensely proud of.
good song

Hi Daniel,
Just an update on my experiences with this amp. Still absolutely loving it, firstly! I've done a bit of experimenting with tubes, and pretty much always running it with 6V6s in it now - plenty loud enough for even very large venues (played Aylesbury Civic Hall with it a couple of weeks ago, although it was miked) and seems a little more sorted and sweeter than with 6L6s. i really like it.

this may seem like a strange compaeison to make,
but seeing as though the new Hiwatt handwired reissue's are around the same price range,
they cant be compared because the Hiwatt only really has a clean sound, unless you want to your head blown off driving the preamp into breakage
is there any way you could get those sort of sounds from a handwired Hiwatt
jamie241290 3 years ago
Apples and oranges for sure. Hiwatts are all about headroom. Two-Rock uses all the ingredients of classic amp tone such as output distortion and transformer grind to achieve its tone.

man being 16 means i have a longggg time to wait before i can even think about owning an amp that nice. but awesome tone and sweet playing... god i want that tone haha i'll settle with my blues junior for now though
patrickrharkness 3 years ago
Thanks Patrick. Just tell your parents if they buy you a Two-Rock that you won't need to receive a Christmas or Birthday present till 2037!!!! Blues Junior is a fine amp for a 16 yr old guitarist. Good core tone.
TheGigRigDaniel 3 years ago
yeah, i'm a young blues junior player to, but check out webster chicagos. they're rare, but cheap and great sounding. Like a swart atomic space tone. I just bought one.

no offense to anyone, but for the money i would expect the amp to play itself. my tophat was comparitively cheap and has a very comparable timbre. sounds quite nice though.
opel47 3 years ago
Yep, they're expensive. But I for me it's ticks all the boxes. Of all the amps I've ever played (and that goes into the hundreds and hundreds)there's only one other that i feel as intuitively connected with as I do with the Two-Rock, and that is....(coming soon)
TheGigRigDaniel 3 years ago

Sounds GREAT!! Great playing and great tone.

Nice work sir. Very inspiring. Two questions-
1. how does the gig-rig toggle the amp's reverb? Nice trick!
2. Has the Jet got 6V6's o 6L6's in this clip? Sock valves?
OK, that's three questions! :)
DrJeffers 3 years ago
Thanks, that's very kind. I had Joe make the reverb switchable instead of the EQ bypass. I figured that the EQ sounds so great, why would I want to bypass it? So by using the remote switches in TheGigRig I can program what channel I want and the reverb staus per preset with no tap dancing. I'm using new Tung-Sols 6L6's. I like the sound of the 6V6's but I prefer the headroom with the 6L6's. Valve choice us VERY important with this amp. Try loads and see what you like.
TheGigRigDaniel 3 years ago
Ah, thought there was something clever needed to toggle the reverb! Neat. Cheers for the valve info, that's very helpful. Best, J

TheGigRigDaniel 3 years ago
Cool- I'm currently just going through the diminutive combo's single TR-65- amazing tone from such a tiny box! However, a TR 2x12 cab will be next... Thinking of going for the TR-65 and TR-65R combined, which i know Joe recommends as a 'best of both worlds' option. Can't wait to open it up with a more spacious cab! But as for revelations, just idly strumming through this amp is still a revelation to me- never have i enjoyed the pleasures of simple playing so much before! Can't get bored of it!

Such a great tone man. I'm gonna own a two-rock someday even if it results in living on the streets.
DTrucksEnthusiast 3 years ago
I still feel excited everytime i play it. I've just started using a pair of Heritage G12-65's as well that sound fantastic. Once you sort out the valves and speakers you like in these amps, you have a friend for life.

I can only imagine...
DTrucksEnthusiast 3 years ago
What kind of cab/speaker(s)?
patrickmer10s 4 years ago
It's a bruno with a couple of old Celestions in it. Vibrant cab. Speakers do break up very quickly but I liked them for this.

nice...are those the stock pups in the tele? I like that fat tone in the last segment. keep it up.
pottedmeat42 4 years ago
yeh, but the custom shop pups are anything but stock. I've tried replacing them with loads of different ones, but always come back to these. They're really great

Thanks. There are more videos on the way. TheGigRig was my idea but the finished product is a collaboration between myself and my business partner. It's been refined over the past few years into a product that we're immensely proud of.

Thanks. The tele is an NOS relic. Been my main guitar for about 3 years. Really great guitar.
