this isn't surprising, he just put in the time and succeeded in it. Plus he enjoyed it. Enjoyment+good methods+dedication is all one needs to learn new languages
This video appears to have been dubbed over and does not convince me of Brian's Cantonese. Although I am sure his Cantonese is OK, I have been studying for 12 years now.
his chinese name is wong fei hung? nice name xD and yeah, where he's living must cost a lot in hk. all my relatives that live there work their fingers to the bone, and still live in very small flats, which they said is still expensive in terms of rent.
i was also going to say this guy lives in an extremely posh flat for someone whos been in hk for 1yr. i know people been there for 50yrs, still living in the slums.
He did the right thing, actually learning through watching movies is the most effective way to acquire another language. Not only you can pick up the pronunciation and vocabulary, also you can learn about the culture. How you say things and when to say it in what situation is also important. I admire people who got the courage to go to a completely strange place and trying to learn a language. They usually succeed.
How long did he study in Australia before coming to Hong Kong? Can I assume the proficiency displayed in the video is the result of that time + 1 year in Hong Kong?
That's not suprising. There are too many Chinese in Australia. You don't have to know a single word of English to live or work there as long as u stay in the Asian communities.
hooooly crap he can read the chinese newspaper???? hardcore.

For a master cantonese speaker, speaking mandarin is a child's game.
