For something a lot cheaper, you might be able to get close enough when having a tremolo pedal set to a square wave and a really fast rate.

Check out some demos here on Youtube to see if they can do what you want, the Danelectro Chicken Salad for example is an extremely cheap but really good tremolo.

Somewhere between normal tremolos and the murf are also the Zvex sequencer tremolos.

i already have tremolo on my amp(super champ XD). it doesnt ave much effect, but it wouldn't make much sense to get a tremolo pedal. but i could try to save up for the pedal :)

actually, i got a BR-600 for recording but i found that it had tremolo on it, so i set the wave to square and i put the rate pretty fast. i wasnt even thinking about having tremolo on it, a pleasent surprise ;)

If you've seen some John Frusciante interviews you'll know what I'm talking about. In one of them where hes talking about his Moogerfoogers and how random they are he says "One night we (RHCP) were playing and it (Moogerfooger) started busting out the baddest "drum beat."
