  • Thank you, Tesla!

And in a few days, the 100 watt light bulb become illegal.

China will be the only country able to keep the lights on in America.

Ahhhh.... you just gotta love what socialism is doing for Americas.

Going backwards at the speed of light.

  • zaraz jebnie

  • I LOVE that noise!

  • that thing sounds like a jet engine spinning up xD

    sweet!

  • Wow, I was always curious as to how they powered headlamps during the steam era

  • Whats the rpm?

  • Have you determined what the electrical power output is versus the mass flow of 120psi steam?

  • I saw one of these as a kid, they are very robust! Great post of history.

  • No end bearing however there is a bearing on the other side of the brushes. The commutator just sticks out past the bearing.

  • Robkat check 0:11 seconds in don't see a bearing next to the commutator. I think annotations has been added to this video, so you can point it out.

  • Locomotive 6069 in Sarnia, Ontario is fitted with a Pyle generator from the 1940s. Not running at the moment, it needs a lot of work.

  • we have a locomotive that has one fitted it works great . . . .

  • 32V 16A only? the max is only 512 Watts? what was it suppose to run? its only about half enough power to run a low power blow dryer today.

  • You are right the generator was only used to power the headlight and the locomotive cab lights. The passenger cars used kerosene for light. Thanks for the comment.

  • i see. not all that much for a headlight but i'm sure it was a lot better then nothing. with the right reflector, lets say a 300W headlamp, i'm sure it projected pretty far. thanks for the info.

  • and I thought Edison invented the electric light in the late 1800s

  • The video is about the steam turbine generator, not sure what you are talking about.

  • He states that the light in the locomotive is 1840 ish.

  • Very interesting! Is this a single or multiple stage turbine? Impulse or reaction? What is it's maximum RPM? And what is the steam pressure normally used?

  • It's an impulse turbine; it has a centrifugal rotor. Not sure of the max RPM or steam pressure.

  • 120 psi

  • @douro20

Pyle National model: K-240 "dynamo" (slang for this device on a steam locomotive) run max @ 3200rpm (when governor is adjusted correctly). Not sure of the max rated pressure (around 210-230psi), but their rated output is 500w around 34vdc. Pyle of course did make other models of dynamos with higher outputs, and of the same model but with different output voltages. Steam locomotive headlights typically use 250w 34vdc bulbs.

  • umm the fire to heat the water does not need to be fire u can use a Solar heater or a low watted powered water boiler. Dur who ever said u NEED TO BOIL WATER WITH FIRE must be living in the stonge age still !! geezs ....

  • Steam can be made by sun light collectors like magnifier or Fresnel lenses or reflective disks on the roadside stations. Steam can drive electricity generators; electricity can be stored and used to produce hydrogen storing in compressed tanks. People just drive their cars there to refill or recharge.

  • I don't like internal combustion either, but...

You propose using electricity to heat water to make steam to ... wait for it ... make electricity? lol

Cool-looking page btw, but I have to check it out later...

  • we should use steam to power cars it was better the petrol or diesel

  • no as u would need to heat water to make steam which means you would need fire it's just not efficient!!!

  • 512 Watts , not bad.

Enough to boil a kettle in a few minutes.

Or you could just use the steam to make your coffee.

  • thnx for the vid

this is the way to generate electrcity in saudi

    we use steam turbines .

but i think its better to use atomic power plant if we can solve the problems of Nuclear waves garbage

  • Cool I love the sound these things make when they are wrapped up they sound like jet engines and 36 volts thats pretty good for 20th century technology.

  • There were generators from (the 20th century OMG that is soooooo long ago, get real!) that can put out thousands of volts and were built in the 19th century.

The generator that is putting out the power for your iPud and computer gizmos was probably built when your daddy was in kindergarten.

  • Woah somebody doesn't appreicate something that is steam driven putting out that type of voltage to power a train and be that compact.

  • this is really cool!

  • could you build one of these out of a microhydro turbine

  • I think the two are very similar different turbine blades and nozzeles.

  • this is how steam turbine ships make there power. the boilers are making alot of steam so some aux. steam is sent to the TG'S(turbo generators) which are giant ones of what is in this video and thats how power is produced. Its really interestering!

  • Hi,

I need a steam turbine generator exactly like this one. How can I get a steam locomotive turbine generator? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much.....jster

  • Look on google for locomotive parts. They become more rare everyday and they are not cheap.

  • Thank you....jster

  • great stuff.thanks angelica14709!keep posting.We canuse this info.

  • If anyone knows of plans for sale to build a relatively simple steam generator for at least 5KW, please let me know. Thank you.

  • A pair of these generators at 37 seconds in this video "Union Pacific Challenger Steam Engine 3985" copy and paste it search box

  • I think they were really onto something with the steam generator. I going to to build am up to date model using todays alloys and brushless electric generators.

    Pat #001

  • nice video.. thanks for share it

  • See a generator like this in operation on top of the locomotive in this video. Search youtube for dusan45 Pennsylvania Railroad Museum Strasburg
