Despite all the craziness of VH in their early years.......Picture this people...these were young dudes changing the tone of rock music! They had more influence on rock music(guitar) than any band ever. Yeah they might be wasted in most of their shows(all in their early 20's).....But they made it all happen.
Well said, they were young, and except for DLR, very awkward when put in front of a camera. Amazing how elusive they are, we would love to hear anything from them!
David Lee Roth is by far the best front man of any band of any time! From his cheesy dancing to his bad ass martial arts moves, he owns the stage! It also helps that he has a phenomenal musical band backing him up. This was the height of entertainment!
Man, Dave sucked live. They were all fed up with him by this tour and hated being on it and around him. According to Ed, they were sick of the clown show and feeling like they were ripping the paying crowd off by the goofy, bad singing performances of Dave. This is the end of the band, its almost sad watching the 1984 tour.
@theShowStopper321 For the sake of debate, I think u got it backwards. Eddie is rippin of the crowd with all these prog rock riffs...DLR was trying to keep it a rock n roll band
@metrakos I always thought Ed and Al wanted to be more like a Rush/Prog-pop band cus some of their riffs and drum phrases, accents remind me of Rush. I accept that argument but a bad performance is a bad performance
@theShowStopper321 I agree that especially this last album had a Rush influence and I also remember DLR saying at the time how hard it was for him to come up with melodies and lyrics to the prog stuff. If i were a singer, this tune would not be my fav to perform. I dont think it is a bad performance though
@metrakos I also read that Ed was very influenced by Allan Holdsworth and his very progressive jazz / rock fusion at this point...some of his chording and quirky timing is very Holdsworth like
@metrakos exactly: those guys payed to hear the song like it was on the record. fair enough it gets boring to play exactly the same every night but you can't then rip on someone else for cheating the crowd by keeping things interesting for himself.
@theShowStopper321 thats true, and i agree. id be super pissed if my singer kept forgetting up the lyrics or fucking up the melody cause he couldnt sing his parts properly. btw, al is awesome on 1984, but his timing is ALL OVER THE PLACE here!!!
@sparkles67 : that is a standard joke from DLR........he does it almost every show (or did)........it's to keep the feel/vibe loose with the crowd - after all they were the premiere "party animal" band of their genre......
Being the lead singer of Van Halen makes DLR more than a cheerleader, he co-wrote those classics with Ed,his melodies,he also plays pretty decent acoustic guitar live,Ice Cream Man schtick was always cool.
You couldn't be more wrong. I I even seen that mentioned on Pop up Videos on VH1 years ago, not to mention it's in numerous interviews. Go do your research and please prove me wrong.
great trip down memory lane!I saw this concert in san diego, how stoned was i at the show i don't remember, but it was 2 nights in a row of van halen 1984 tour at san diego sports arena;were you there?
Those days it was more like House of 'Caine. Copious quantities of blow was done. Speaking of blow, too bad the reunion blows. I paid $275 per ticket to take my family to see them here in Denver. We left mid-show it was so bad. Glad to have youtube.
couldn't have said it better myself Theo. what a rip....the wolgang tour was crap and this 1984 tour was their worst tour up to this point by far. in 1984 too much off- stage crap was coming to a breaking point and they were doing way too much coke and too much money was coming in, the album was flying off the shelves and dave and ed had had enuf of each other by this point.
thanks for postin it but this is nothin' special.... and i luv em.

@menarddr ... Roth is a fucking clown... and now, the Queer lost his voice. So... no future for VH, and Roth together... is over.

One of my favs... but Alex seems like his timing it really off... or maybe it's just a shitty recording and my ears are deceiving.
DarthKazi 2 years ago
He's playing it differently from the album. It sounds like he's double bassing in the beginning. Otherwise, it sounds fine.
