  • Who would put their fine instrument of carry-on size in the belly of the plane?

  • This is Brilliant!!! Sorry about your instrument, but without the mishap, this song wouldn't have been born!

  • @CindySweetwater Ha-ha, thanks! : )

  • @violinista53 point taken, but is anyone really surprised that baggage gets treated this way?...really? and where does it end ? What if you want to travel with a precious birds egg collection ? If you have some hugely fragile object you have to ask if it's wise to travel with it in an airplane? Its too big to carry on, unless you want to buy it its own seat. So stump up and pay. Maybe travelling across the country with a precious, fragile guitar just aint such a great idea.

  • Well done!

  • Very, very clever lyrics!

  • Whoa - very good tune. Sad to hear that baggage gorillas still live to "care less." Most baggage is pretty good and a baggage handler has to intentionally do some damage for it to occur. Too bad those goons are simply tossed in the clink. They must have pretty good union protection that cares nothing for passengers.

  • When I think of my beloved dulcimers being treated like this.....Ooooo, I'm gonna have to go by car if I travel with them, I see. MY car.

  • Sorry to hear about the dulcimer, Bing, you and J should come up the Nash Vegas some time.

  • @Salindil We'll be up there in June! Hoping to jam on Broadway again somewhere.

  • Another pithy, humorous strike back at the scornful and utterly disinterested state of affairs prevailing toward customers and their things at too many airlines

  • Ever watched baggage handlers load a plane? Its the same the world over. They're at the bottom of the food chain and they take it out on the luggage.

  • Good song. I like the singing style on this.

  • Ouch - the Philistines!

  • A very good song...that is what makes these protests so successful. And that is what is present here. Thanks.

  • lol this is great

  • All I can say is well done. BMI and Air Canada broke two seperate bags. And they did not want to hear about it. Well done!

  • I don't expect to get off the plane with broken bones, bruises or a blood nose so why do some people seem to think it is OK for their luggage to get smashed up?

  • I don't understand why folks have to post negative comments. Bing wasn't trying to copy or outdo anyone.. just having some fun with a bad experience that got the airlines attn. Nice job Bing!

  • haha, in reply to Jimmys request we made our most scandalous vid yet

  • This is really giving me nightmares!!!

  • Now if we could only put our politicians in a box and send air freight. Bet new laws would be put in place fast on handling cargo.

  • Hahaaahahaa that would be great!

  • This November I'm going to be flying NorthWest, and plan to handcuff myself to my dulcimer!

I will be flying to Orlando, FL... Do you know of anyone I could jam with? ;)

  • Good job. Nice song. Austrian air made me check a computer case because it had two notebook computers in it. Fortunately I took out the Apple MacBook Pro because the older HP that was left in got its screen mangled. Thanks for writing this song for all of us.

  • Nice try but the band wagon left the station the day Dave Carroll released his video on YouTube.

  • I like it BUT I think I like Tom Paxton's song a litle better. My 2 cents only. Not ment as any kind of put down.

  • give me a break copy cat to the max gezzz

  • are you putting that in the next book Bing, I'll be looking for it there

  • Heck, this is what's needed.

The more of this kind of stuff gets out there, the more these guys might finally have to sit-up and take notice that they need to take more care of the property of passengers who pay their damned wages.

    Go it you guys!

    [and sorry about the dulcimer]

  • I hate when people have overweight baggage, so of course they get throwed around...

  • Ha! Ha! Now if someone would just post Paxton's song for Republic Airlines. Beware of baggage handlers.

  • Good singing and song writing. Very catchy. Wasn't familiar with dulcimer music before so thanks David Carroll for prompting you to do this and consequently letting me find your channel. You should do more singing / song writing to go with the great dulicmer music.

  • how come on the news it said that this had 3.9 million views and was a big hit?

  • Nice song, Bing, and I'm sorry about your dulcimer. Delta broke my suitcase; it looked as though they ran over it with a plane. I had to fly on Delta and few months later, and they broke that suitcase, too.

  • great song!

is the title of your song supposed to be a parody of "only a northern song" by the beatles?

  • Thanks! And, yep - that's a nod to George Harrison's tune. First thing that popped into my mind.

  • Nice song! So sorry to hear about what happened! NorthWest has always allowed me to take my dulcimer onboard as a carry-on, in addition to my normal carry-on bag. My duclimers are pretty much handcuffed to my wrists whenever travelling!

  • It's all worked out pretty good - so no real complaints here anymore.

  • Excellent song man!

    Taking pieces home. lol

    Great Job.

Delta ripped off my emblem from my brand new luggage!

  • Thanks! Are you sure it was Delta and not the TSA? I've heard some horror stories about some of their agents, too.

  • Comment removed

  • Buy a flight case!

  • Yeah,well said.

There doesn't seem to be enough share of the responsibility taken by the owners.

    Ever thought of insurance too?

  • I've thought of many things - including being able to carry my instrument onto the plane without checking it at the gate. That's really the point here - one that the TSA has urged all airlines to take up. Enforcement of this advisory from a federal agency has been left up to the airlines, and they're all trying to make extra bucks by charging people for checking bags, which used to be included in the price of a ticket. This has caused more people to carry on bags; unfortunately.

  • @dread66mon I always bring my guitar with me inside the plane when I travel, with no problems at all, in europe, at least.

  • @chipfire: It's not all about the cost of the instrument. My violin is pretty cheap by professional standards, but I would still be devastated if it was damaged -- not only because of lost work and lost value, but because it truly is unique and irreplaceable. It would be a lot like if you trusted someone to care for a beloved family pet of yours (fragile, duh!) and they tossed it out a window, breaking its legs; I wouldn't have the chutzpah to make this sort of callous remark to you.

  • Workin' on that for checking - point is, though, this was meant to be a carry-on. Flight cases don't qualify as such.

  • I really that song, great job.

I'm sorry but what is a mountain dulcimers?

  • Look it up on the computer d.s.

  • Oh, man. Dulcimers are such wonderful and delicate sounding instruments. What a shame that some folks could care less about the way they treat the things that exist only to bring pleasure and beauty to our lives.

  • Good for you. All we need is 10 more songs for a CD. We can call it.

    "Don't Piss off the Bards"

    It will swell a million.

  • Between "United Breaks Guitars", "Thank You Republic Airlines" and "Only A Northwest Song", we only need eight more for some kind of charity album, donating proceeds to musicians who have had their instruments busted. : )

  • Airline pilots refer to their baggage handling cew as "RAMP MAGGOTS", for a reason. The flight crew are "SKY NAZI'S" - I'd listen to them in the bars after their flights, they have a game where they pick on some pax, and, well you don't want to know... theis TSA created monsters. If I choose to fly ALL my luggage is mailed air frieght with 10x insurance.

  • Yikes. Then again, on closer inspection, I see how that works. They *are* many different departments all working together to make things happen. I'm sure it doesn't happen the way they want all the time.

  • BING! I was sick for you when I heard the news!! I can just imagine how you must've felt! I can empathize somewhat:

Before I was about to go onstage for Theatre West Virginia, the tail end of my strap came off and sent my dulcimer down to the ground and put a humongous crack on the top about 2 feet long! You know, these incompetent nimrods need to understand what their doing! Did you get compensated?

    Hunter

  • I heard about that, Hunter! Ouch!

Northwest Airlines has offered a compensation, but it's short of the mark. We're continuing discussions today. Check the Chicago Tribune for a story involving this situation.

  • That was fantastic! They just don't know the depth of feeling when your instrument, your friend and boon companion, gets busted by careless, incompetent handlers. Think I'll post this on my

Facebook page too, to promote both your work and to share the pain. Thanks, Bing.

  • Thanks! Do spread the word - musicians need some assurances about their instruments when they travel. We put too much into them!

  • I like this even better than the original!

  • Thank you!

  • The airport apes have been allowed for too many years to inflict their damage, laughing behind their union, and let the airlines pick up the tab. It would be nice to see some of the irresponsible apes being held accountable for their actions. Saying they are "doing their jobs" is simply wrong.

  • I agree with you there.

  • Superb. I plan to let a lot of folks know. Keep the faith, bro.

  • Thank you, please do! This video did manage to get Northwest's attention and we are hashing out a resolution now.

  • I knew United wasn't the only airline with baggage handlers like that. I hope to see more.

  • Me too - musicians, document everything when you travel! Nothing like posting it on the internet to bypass some of the red tape.

  • I keep telling people, they're not called baggage HANDLERS...it's baggage MANGLERS!

  • : ) Not all baggage crew are so careless - unfortunately, it's the ones that do the damage that get our notice.

  • Wow. That is just...wow.

A long time back I flew Delta from modesto CA to charleston WV and I had 4 boxes of luggage all down below.

When I got to charleston I saw a cd of mine spinning lonesomely along the baggage claim.

All 4 boxes had been destroyed and all my possessions were drifting freely along conveyers or were frozen to the belly of the plane.

    I feel for this dulcimer.

  • Ouch - I hope you got some compensation for that.

  • Aside from the typically great composition and musician ship and performance - fine production values top to bottom as well!

  • My friend Robert Swirsky on FB posted the link to this, ironically! LOL!

  • Hopefully that means word's getting around!

  • Bing so sorry to hear about your dulcimer. What was her name? I hope she gets fixed up alright. Thanks for telling your story......maybe someday they'll listen.

  • Thanks - her name is Annie and she's actually the dulcimer you hear on the recording, back in my arms (and lap) again!

  • hope these videos transform the airlines into the service industry they once were.

  • You and me both - I hope more people decide to take matters into their own creative hands. I'm sure baggage handlers all over the world are aware that they're not as invisible as they'd like to be.

  • This video needs to get to front page of youtube so they will pay! :-D Hope your dulcimer gets fixed fast.

  • Thanks! Annie is back with me now, that's her on the recording.
