I been ranching my whole life and we have always used tables. Then ranch i grew up on was one of the biggest in Colorado we had 3000 hd of mother cows so that means we had to brand 3000 hd of calves. Guess what we used because it was faster TABLES! we could brand about 300 hd in less than 2 hrs with 2 tables and 10 hands, not 30 to 40 hands. AND no it was NOT a city folk kinda ranch a real 7 days a week on horse back ranch.
@rid696 Right on... Hard to teach old dogs new tricks, tho'. I've had to delete more than one obscene comment about tables; it's so easy to big a "tough guy" behind a keyboard, ain't it? We were 1/10th your size, but just as real, 24/7 no breaks, no vacations, and no "dudes".
Dont let them get you down!!! I have worked some of the biggest outfits that there are. From Nebraska to west Texas and take it from me tables are much faster! You can do twice the work on a shoe string crew. I guess that everyone giving flack has a lot of money to turn loose on day workers... Hell just hire a full time crew I guess. Day help is hard to find and alot eat up the profits!! Im shocked that someone didnt say real cowboys dont listen to the chillie peppers either? come on ppl!
@cowboymd1974 where I'm from in Nebraska we trade help. we rope and drag and can have up to 1300 head done by noon. leaving the afternoons to fence feed or what ever else needs done. to each there own and if it works for you keep doing it. I always felt sorry for the guy that got that crap kicked out out of him pushing the cattle. I don't know of a big ranch in Nebraska that uses a chute. Alot of farmers that only have a couple hundred use them
Wow seriously you put a table and calicrate banders on a video??? Shameful.. Get a horse, and drag that kid to the fire man. Your horse will be better, you wont pinch your finger in that awful contraption and your help will feel alot better about themselves.
I don't work on a ranch by any means, but I did spend some time in my youth on cattle ranches over the summer. We branded by wrestling them down (the old-fashioned way). I find the table way interesting and pretty cool!!! I think some of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience of working on a ranch is really just the beauty of the world around us that can really only be seen from horseback.
@GMANinGA250... Thanks for the comment. We always used to catch a few "old school" for fun. Usually the last ones, before the "refreshments" started to flow.
@cowpoke87418 so you can do 60 an hour or does that not count catching the next calf. we rope and drag in my area thought about using a table but, too time consuming. If we start rounding up at 7am we can have 1000 to 1300 done by noon.....brand, notch ear, 3 shots, implant, fly tag, and in some times dehorn.
@bm4nu You must have a ton of freaking help... branding 1300 calves in 5 hours... that would be a calf standing to completely done every 13 seconds non stop for 5 hours.
@speartexdixon yep pretty good crew and everyone knows their job. we have 25 ropers in the pen at a time and most of the time there is 18 to 22 calves on the ground at any given time with 7 or 8 roped and on there way out.
horses and ropes are for 19th century morons, hell bent on giving ten times the stress to their livestock. Only the losers brand the "old fashioned" way around here, Cowpoke.
Welcome to the 21st century, ranchgirl! I used to cut my bull calves with a pocketknife too. Hey, you can't see the horses, but see the Mexican guy with a cowboy hat? Ain't that good enough? Really, the table is so fast, only needs a tiny crew, and I believe is MUCH easier on the calves.
there's 10000 correct ways to brand and castrate. All others, the calf winds up dead or FUBAR... just don't let that happen, and you're in the 10000 right ways! :-)

it is less stressful on cattle to drag them to the fire. a good crew can brand cut ear mark and vaccinate in less than a minute

Justify it however you like. You're wrong.
