I've known sets of gay parents and straight parents.

It doesn't matter if both parents are one gender. They can still play the roles of two seperate and distinct parental figures. Saying that there needs to be a mother and a father limits people's roles in life to their gender. There is no reason that two women or two men couldn't play the same disciplinary and nurturing roles as the mother and father traditionally do.
