  • looking at james taylors old 70s videos... as a guy... he looks like an awesome guy- someone you'd want as a friend..and his songs are the words of a nice guy..

but being that he is much older than i, and i only discovered him many years later... to me, he is like a third grandpa or something :-)... you can't hate james taylor...anyone who could hit the dislike button on any james taylor song is not my kinda guy

  • great song. great artist. great memories.

  • How could you dislike this?

  • I remember this show!

  • i wish someone would have a karaoke version of this song..i will sing it!!!

  • Yep, R.I.P to my old friends Don (Grolnick 9/23/1948 - 6/1/1996) and Carlos..(12/7/1956 - 4/7/1998) at seems like just yesterday we were all together...and it seems like just yesterday James, Val and Arnold sang "Lonesome Road" at your funeral...miss you my old friends..

  • I love me some Rosemary Butler! In her day, one of the best hired gun vocalists in the business. If you've never seen it, look for Jackson Browne's "The Load Out/Stay" - Live 1978. In just 22 seconds of solo singing she blows the freakin' doors off. You won't be disappointed.

  • PAPAZOTE!

  • love this song, thank u for sharing this....is that the same rosemary butler that did background vocal for jackson browne? i love her voice, she's awesome!

  • @clouds882 Yes it was; isn't she fantastic?

  • What a great song, thanks for posting

  • All this tallent in just one song -- and JT has lots and lots and lots of brilliant songs - what a man.

  • Where the is the Bass player??

This is one of the best bass "lines" in all of james taylor's songs (which is saying a lot) and you don't even get one shot of him here.

Bass players get not respect :(

other than that; a great song!

  • @theallmikey Believe the bass player is leland skylar who was with james from the earlier days

  • @music4me41 Yup!

  • @music4me41: There is more than one legend on that stage surrounding James Taylor..and R.I.P. those legendary musicians. Wow, what a friggin' band to have up there.

  • @theallmikey He's barely visible at the end, stage right. It's Lee Sklar.

  • What's all the moaning about? I agree with the 2 top comments. Mellow folks, mellow, let the music take you. James would have it that way, and so would you if you let the wind songs of bro. James chill you down and soothe those angry pixels. Peace, Blue.

  • this song is ultimately uplifting, there are some dark things there though...

  • There's an inherent hypocritical flaw in telling people not to say something...Dumbass.

  • Super song by a superb artist

  • haha. rosemary putting sum hip action in to that step touch.. shes feeling it yo!!

  • Such a smooth song, brings back so many memories

  • I love this song. I got my first new car at the time...1987 Mazda RX7 and played this album whenever I was lucky enough to have a date. Ahh, memories!

  • i love JT

  • Love this video - esp. rosemary's big hair. 1989! her voice is great, too, and Carlos's drumming is typically smooth and warm, yet pointed and powerful. I believe Mr. Vega is the best drummer JT ever had.

  • i find this song hits close to home because so many of some good friends of mine passed way too early...henry88449

  • I keep listening to this over and over again, truly amazing, great voice, great lyrics..

  • 3 people died young

  • @missinformationage I know that Carlos Vega died young... Who are the other two?

  • @Bassarie nah it was one of those goofy jokes about the few people who clicked dislike. it's a great song, tho. I'm digging the subtlety. Nothing special, just good music :)

  • Always loved this version so much better than the one on the album. Bgvs are great as well as Lee Sklar's bass line.

  • How good to see two great musicians, Don Grolnick and Carlos Vega, who, sadly, are no longer with us.

  • I dedicated this song to my wife. It's how we are gonna grow old together. Thanks for the post.

  • This performance is a great example of the highest level of musicianship displayed by James' bands dating all the way back to the Sklar/Kunkel/Kortchmar days. Quite simply, you've got to be the best to pull this stuff off live. Most of JT's stuff is extremely tough to play correctly, but he consistently assembles the best musicians in the business to record and tour with. "Never die young" is a killer song and displays the understated coolness that has always accompanied JT's music. Thanks!

  • I live my life by "Never grow old,Never die young" every day . My wife still lets play with cars.

Any song that Taylor sings always make me feel that life is good and that love is better.

  • 3 people don't dig this ?

  • Want tickets to JT on 4/22 for my birthday tomorrow!!!!

  • Dan Dugmore's doing the main opening bars from 0:30 to 0:45.

  • Probably my favorite James Taylor song, my dad used to play this tape all the time in his truck when I was kid.....I had "new Moon Shine" memorized from top to bottom

  • I don't see how he remembers all the lyrics to so many songs! But he does a spectacular job.

  • his drummer carlos vega committed suicide a few years ago , what a shame and what a loss,RIP carlos!

  • Here is the definitive statement on James and this recording: IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS. SIMPLY A MASTER PERFORMING A MASTERPIECE!

  • JT is the best !

  • Carlos Vega is amazing. He had one of the sweetest grooves of them all and was the ultimate drummer for JT`s music. Here`s to you Carlos..

  • I'll bet Danny Kortchmar and Russell Kunkel would've enjoyed playing on this song.

  • Everyone should if they can at least once in their lives go to a james taylor concert......really the man is just incredible..just once when he is your way ..treat yourself to a concert you will never forget......

  • @bekindunlimited

oh my going in july 10

  • We have 3 "Oscar The Grouches" here. That's okay though, JT sang to him, too! To change the dislikes to likes, if he could! :)

  • My rendition to this wonderful artist and beautiful song.

  • What a man, what a lovely song, he is as good as ever, Golden voice that never die down. With all respect, I salute !!

  • Love it :)

  • wonderful.......è un angelo....

  • When I depart from visit to friends or family I quote Taylor,"Never grow old, never die young" with my hand in a Vulcan "V".I also have that phrase posted over my door way.

  • Vintage JT! These videos remind me how much I miss Carlos Vega. Pocket drummer extraordinaire. Never die young.

  • What a great song. Had to buy this CD

  • I saw JT in Raleigh, NC. on New Years Eve in 2000; a great concert. My wife was a little worried about Y2K. The nice Marriott hotel we stayed in, gave out Y2K kits (flash light, bottle water, snacks) to each room. LOL

  • I like Kate Markowitz, I like David Lasley, I like Valerie Carter - but I think the harmonies of Arnold McCuller and Rosemary Butler with JT are the best combination EVER.

  • Sweet song

  • che classe! .... grande james

  • @liveforfunk Why can't you be conservative and like James Taylor?! He's a musician and an artist, one doesn't have to agree with his politics to love his music. He's awesome. I agree with you!

  • i've seen James with those two bg singers before but it was a lot longer back than 2008. his shows are always awesome!!!

  • 3 people disliked this? Those are 3 people who don't know good music when they hear it.

  • I'm betting this was 1988,not simply because that's when Never Die Young was released, but because I saw him that year at the World Expo in Brisbane,Australia and the backing singers and stage design is identical to the photo's I have of that night.

  • Never give up Never slow down Never grow old and never ever die young....in ways it says alot about James Taylor......pure class no other word for him CLASS .

  • just awesome

  • i think i was there ! was this constitution hall in DC mid 80''s ?

  • Something amazing about unbreakable bonds. Most on the outside truly don't know how to handle it and the barriers that arise therefore seem insurmountable. Thanks Mr. Taylor for writing a song about what most perceive as a Romeo and Juliet complex but about the reality that some face each day of their lives just to be with the one they love. Where true love lies it really does conquer all and, once people stop judging, they realize that they fought an unwinable fight.

  • I love JT, but Rosemary Butler could sing the damn phone book and I'd listen. A voice truly God given.

  • and i would pay to hear them sing the book. :)

  • Great song and I used to love watching this concert back when I had a VCR ;-)

  • JT's music always inspires me to be happy. I live my life by,"Never die young, never ever grow old". It keeps me young at heart.

  • JT always had the best of the best musicians playing with him. Simply stunning. Happy Birthday James. Thank you for all the great music.

  • Omg, i saw him do this on Saturday Night Live, lol, it was so awesome. He is one of the greats.

  • Rosemary was a great singer and sang for Jackson Browne as well

    Thanks for posting

  • RIP Carlos Vega and Don Grolnick. What a band this was. Beautifully constructed arrangement and soulful performance

  • great song!!! I listened to it all the time when I was a child. Brings back good memories.

  • arnold mcculler and rosemary butler may be the 2 greatest backup singers i have ever heard. check her out on jackson browne's "stay" and check him out when JT turns him loose on "shower the people"

  • Dan Dugmore alternated between steel guitar and electric guitar throughout this concert.

  • Total Legend

    NEVER DIE YOUNG JT

  • JT is fantastic it is my absolute dream to see him in concert before he completely stops perfoming I've had a rough year this year I will find a way to see him I promise me

  • @70s80schild1 Good luck.

  • I have seen him almost every time he has come to Southern California. He never disappoints!

  • I love this song, it's beautiful! I'd LOVE to be a JT background vocalist.

  • Why would people thumbs-down this?

  • A wonderful lyric description of my 38 year love affair with my soulmate!

    Rbdb

  • comme james dean trop jeune mort

  • if you can't enjoy music without bringing up politics..then you've got a serious problem. enjoy the music. shut up about your causes.

  • That is such a liberal thing to say!

  • @Groovemasterjoe Do not mistake me for a liberal. I am a musician first and foremost. secondly...I consider myself to be neither conservative nor liberal .

  • That's just an ignorant irrelevant statement-and he is primarily a folk singer, so duh? How about just appreciating the genius of his music, there's a thought...

  • I love James..but I wanted to see his back up singer, Rosemary Butler..one of the unsung voices, who you have heard a billion times, and never known it was her...lol..

    love this.

  • Ye gads.... i didn't know there was such a thing as a "right-wing" Norwegian. I thought you guys were super libs. 'Learn something everyday.....

  • Comment removed

  • I love James Taylor.... especially because he's a liberal left-wing puke. Nice to know that a conservative right-wing puke can see beyond his/her shallow political view.

  • can u tell what this left wing and right wing actually mean...i have no idea but would like to know :D

  • Just listen to the gorgeous music then politics is all bollocks anyway.I will only remember the music not who the singer votes for and his views won,t influence me at all

  • whenever i hear this song, it brings back good memories. I hear it all the time on the radio and its makes think of the times i spent with my grandfather in Dothan,Al. very touching song. haynes1776

  • ich weiss das passt nicht zum video aber ich suche leute zum quatschen hab auch ne cam

  • Wow, I haven't seen this since it originally aired on PBS in 1988.

  • I remember seeing this entire taped concert on PBS shortly after the concert was performed. This song absolutely floored me then ... and it still does. Butler and Arnold were the PERFECT back up singers for this song. Great song !!! Great concert !!!

  • I remember this on PBS as well. And, gotta agree with you, Butler and Arnold did rock. Saw Arnold at Obama's inauguration with JT

  • I love ALL of James Taylor's hit songs! HE ROCKS MY LIFE! Talent like this must go on forever and forever! It touches the soul, mind and spirit. What a guy!

  • I love James taylor. I would love to go one of his concerts. I loved his music since I was a child. His songs really touches your heart and soul and sprit. It would be an honor to meet him in person.

  • What an incredible band this was. The great Carlos Vega on drums, and Don Grolnick on piano. Both gone WAY too early.

  • Gone way to early , Why ?

  • Don died of cancer, I believe, and Carlos commited suicide.

  • It's kind of eerie when you consider the lyrics of this song. *BTW* You are right on both counts concerning Don and Carlos.

  • No, Carlos Vega was actually murdered at his home in Los Angeles in April of 1998.

  • @NDW85 April 7

Vega, 41, died at home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the eve of a scheduled April 8 appearance with Taylor on "The Oprah Winfrey Show,"

    RIP Don Grolnick

  • Don't forget that this song was about the Wolf Restoration project back years ago for the WWF.......

  • I'm 25 and when I was a kid, James Taylor was pretty much all we'd ever listen to. At home or in the car.

  • Genius, total genius. Since I was a child, a boy in Sao Paulo, Brazil, born in 1960, I'm 49 now, Great James, with his unmatchable talent, has been a reference , a hero to me. What a luminous artist, what a guy! God bless you, James, and all of us your fans!!!

  • one of the most consummate performers of our time way to go James one of my favorite s to see in concert.

  • Even when I was a kid I loved James Taylor, now I'm 46 never get enough, he's wonderful.

  • Diva?!? That's Rosemary Butler. Among other things, she sang the great solo part on Jackson Browne's "Stay." Great singer. Thanks for the post!

  • This song reminds of me of the movie The Notebook.

and seeing the young couple running around town so in love. lol Every good love reminds me of that movie. :)

  • Love my uncle; lovin' those sidefolk even more... Glory and Morning....

  • Look at that diva's hair in the background. Oh, Lawd, it looks like something just nested. I love the 80s!

  • I love the backups. I remember them from the 80's.

  • dimples? Iove dimples.

  • Nobody does it better.

  • Please keep your comments about Michael Jackson on his videos not all of us give a sh it about him

  • Essa musica é LINDA!

  • i have this video,i still think james ha too much make up on,,ha ha.there is a version of steamroller on this and it is un believable,i would put it up only i dont know how

  • 1988???

Anyway great suff - still have some JT's LP... and I'll not die young

  • bellissima

  • Rosemary Butler's such a cutie.

  • o.o D+ de bom!

  • when my son (now 16yo) was about 3, I would play JT all the time and referred to it as "music" Once when his dad asked him if he wanted to listen to music and put something else on, my son said, "that's not music." lol

  • Isn't your son's dad you?

  • I re-read my post and I don't see the confusion lol, I'm my son's mom

  • he thought you were your son's dad, not mum.

  • A little slow there, McGavel?!

  • Love his music and this song is a classic

  • James Taylor is truely an amazing musician and an amazing smooth vocalist. He is 61 btw born 1948.

  • I made a music video while a student at Sam houston state university in huntsville tx 20 years ago of this song. Memories. Benn a JT fan since I was a teenager.

  • Such a pure musician. Simply beautiful and inspirational.

  • Amo essa musica...esse som!!

  • I'M A GREAT JT FAN, and i havent heard a boring song from him... he's simply great!!!

  • This is such a great song. I have seen James Taylor 17 times in my life and he NEVER GROWS OLD! His music is a great inspiration to me and I play it around my children all of the time so they know that there is such thing as music that is real in the fact that you can actually understand and enjoy music without a beat with the same 3 notes or vulgar language.

  • My mother did the same for me growing up. We used to listen to him all the time. The world needs more parents like you. :)

  • jeffnsue91, you have seen him 17 times?!?! I am SO jealous, I have not seen him once. ugh

Mr JT is only a couple of years older than I, I grew up listening to his music. I dearly love the man and his music.

  • when i think of jt live, esp during this time, i always think of these musicians and singers. great GREAT group.

  • I'm guessin middle to late 80's..........

  • love you james! : )

  • my favourite.... i love jt, love this song...

  • Never give up....

    Never slow down...

    Never grow old ,

    and

    NEVER EVER DIE YOUNG.

  • this song is legendary

  • incredible voices :0

  • What a great voice and a great man. But he needs to let go of his ego and make amends with his ex-wife before it's too late.

  • i have seen him 3 times all in the last decade and he was great each time he never puts on a bad show to my knowledge and i have listened to him since i can remember thanks to my mother he is one of the great songwriters of our time

  • I was about 14/15 when this one was aired everywhere around the globe, and I had already been loving James' "That's Why I'm Here" album, so I immediately bought the new issue and loved it even more.

Some of my best memories here.

James is unique, a huge blazing light in a sea of good singer-songwriters, because he's got SOUL. Something that's so hard to find anywhere else.

  • i love him. i got my middle name from him my parents were big fans, so am i . (btw my middle name is taylor not james) :)

  • 2:04-2:08 "...not enough tough for this tough town."

He has a great, funny expression for this line.

    The end harmony is beautiful.

  • I like to think this song is about my wife and me. No one gave us a chance. All we'd hear was the constant refrain of: "He's going to ruin that girl". We didn't fit in anywhere or with anyone except with each other. 6 kids and 3grand children later, we're still together, turning to "rust" sooner or later, no doubt, we're going to "sail on" there'll be broken hearts and unfulfilled dreams but it will all have been worth it.

  • It seems as if your golden one's haved sailed to another land beneath another sky.. Keepin holding uP!!!!!

  • I am blessed to have worked with Rosemary Butler before.....She is a GODDESS of peace, good-tidings and of course, beauty:))

    -Stephen:)

  • top tune.

  • The "hold them up" refrain is the best part.. I wish James would sing all 15 "hold them up" befor he ends with "hold them up dont let them fall."

  • Whether JT is singing about suicide, the jealousy of others,or celebrating the people we love; his voice captures the human experience. Strong, yet fragile; armed with conviction but tinged with uncertainty. I would like to believe that if humanity had one collective voice it would sound like JT. Bogusfogus is right. We see ourselves in his songs.

  • I thought he was singing about an oppressed, nontraditional couple such as a gay couple... "they were alittle too sweet...not enough tough for this town... James had admitted on Tavis Smiley show he had no specific idea he was talking about.. But the message is beautiful and saved my life.. It gave me hope to continue pursuing all of my endeavors.. "Let other hearts be broken let other dreams run dry, let our golden ones sail on sail on to another land beneath another sky..

  • Couldn't have said it better myself =)

  • azy63, beautifully put!

  • It is coming from a man that in the 60's might have had suicidal thoughts, but has found God and life. How lucky can a person be. Rarely, do you hear him GD on his songs in his older age. God bless him, I love this man and his music.

  • This song reminds me of the movie the Notebook. It's beautiful.

  • His songs are like Mirrors. We see yourselves, what we were, what we are and and what we want to be.
