Uhh, you guys realize that if she were to be evaluated today, there's a very very high chance she would be diagnosed with a psychiatric problem such as Schizophrenia. Why do people assume that this is a problem with the soul (something to which there is no evidence of it's existence), when there is pretty substantial data suggesting it is related to a mental condition. It's like if you were investigating a murder thinking "a unicorn may be the killer" because there's a single horn shaped hole.

They were doctors from the university medical faculty in what was probably the most advanced land in Europe.
@furb246 To be more precise schizophrenia has been well known since the 1850s when it was known as dementia praecox. The term schizophrenia was finally adopted in the 1908. German criteria for the disease in 1970s was far more precise than America where the loose use of the term came in for considerable criticism which led to it being finally tightened up. The breakdown in logical processes and competence was never observable in Anneliese.

The capacity for misunderstanding that the religious mind has! Doctors being unable to treat mental illness, often only succeeding in making things worse, does not mean that it is therefore demonic possession! I've seen enough of the mentally ill to know that this is not unique, however it has been elevated to that status not by medical science (however poorly executed) but by religious dogma and superstition! While I don't agree with Chinas methods, I agree with their ethos on religion.

Your basic assumption in making that statement shows a hidden atheistic bias. Science is only concerned with what is provable about the natural world/universe and with discovery of natural laws. On questions such as God which have always lain beyond Science, Science doesn't lay down the law. Individual scientists may publicly pronounce but do so as political persons...

German criteria for the disease in 1970s was far more precise than America where the loose use of the term came in for considerable criticism which led to it being finally tightened up. The breakdown in logical processes and competence was never observable in Anneliese.

Doctors being unable to treat mental illness, often only succeeding in making things worse, does not mean that it is therefore demonic possession!
