The north Korean communists (backed by the USSR and China) didn't allow their part of the country to take part in nation-wide free elections in 1948 organised by the United Nations. If they did, Korea would become one nation in 1948. Moreover, it was the north that invaded the south in 1950, not the other way around. Blame Stalin, Mao and Kim Ir Sen, not Japan or USA.
I wouldn't blame Mao,Stalin, Truman, USA, USSR for the division. Because PRC (1949) was established after the Korean division (1948). And Kim IlSung rose to power in the North after rebelling against Japanese. So it is primarily the Japanese fault since the 16th century.
