single speed freewheeler with coaster brake is superior to a fixed gear. why lose the freewheel? it's one of the greatest joys of cycling. can never rest with a fixed gear. i think that lots of people like fixed gears because they can easily pull tricks they never could on a freewheeling bike.

@gp4nut It's really not that bad not being able to rest. Resting on a track bike is not mashing once your legs get used to it and stronger. There are definitely more advantages to fixed gears that tricks. But they do blow out your legs. I am gonna ride my bike fixed without brakes for as long as I can.

@gp4nut you may think so. I disagree and I have tried both. Have you? Yes you can rest on a fixie, you just follow the pedals around without mashing = pseudo coasting. Or you click out of the pedals and let your legs hang behind them. I do that all the time. Freewheel + coaster brake is just a regular boring bike. The fixed gear turns everything into a game and riding becomes much more fun.

@gp4nut ok cool. I think everyone should try if they like riding bikes. It's a very different and addictive feeling. Also remember you can have a fixie with a flipflop hub and two regular brakes. If you mount a freewheel cassette on one side and a fixed cog on the other side, you can choose between fixed and freewheel just by flipping the rear wheel. So if you don't like riding fixed, the bike will not be useless.

@samuelli817 The frame and the wheels are the most expensive part of any bike, and every bike has 'em. While there are fewer cogs on a fix, if they are of good quality they are actually more precisely made than on a road bike, because of the lack of a spring loaded chain tensioner to take up "slop." That translates into higher cost.

You make it up in spades on long term costs of ownership though. Road bikes chew up parts. If you don't beat the shit out of it a fix just keeps going.
