@superhotbm The Scuderi Group has actually answered this by releasing information about their specialized valve-train system and use of air/spring valves which can handle higher pressures and temperatures.
@linhigley This engine makes less noise than a conventional engine it just sounds different. There is no muffler on this engine yet its volume is the same as a conventional engine with a muffler.
The engine will definitely sound different without question because its fires completely different than a conventional V8, but your comment regarding engine space increasing is false. Simply this engine outputs equal or more power in a smaller footprint with significant fuel savings when comparing to a conventional engine. Also to note, this engine is being marketed to far bigger markets than cars. In closing, the industry is more interested in saving money and global warming than sound output.
-Quite innovative, yet the Scuderi/split-cycle sys. will not likely provide the beloved Mustang-V8 'throaty sound', --as a V8 necessarily becomes a V4. There will also likely be an estimated 30%-increase in engine-space required for a given power-output, owing added complexity. Thus, if one is loosing the nifty V8-sound, -why not just go to a more reliably simplistic EV-system, albeit the notion of an EV is also utterly boring as compared to the living/breathing 'exciting growl' of a sb-V8..!!!
Hmmm, not impressed with the sound. Doesn't sound very smooth to me. But I bet with a few more years in development we're gonna see some major improvements. Good job Scuderi!
@kbhingenior Its a proof of concept prototype not the final product so it wasn't meant to show the final product. Also, this is a two cylinder engine with no muffler.
@kbhingenior -- it will sound different because it is different. split-cycle. not 4 cycle. you are making decisions based on what you know to be historically true, not what's about to make history
It sounds like a Detroit Diesel!

Higher compression ratios cause the exhaust valve to burn up.
I wonder how they get past that one.

@superhotbm -- lower combustion temps...just like diesels. their valves don't burn up.

@superhotbm even with natrium filled valves? could always go towards carbon valves.
I love this pneumatic hybrid!

The more noise an engine makes the less efficient it is

@linhigley -- i'd be interested in reading data on this, can you provide sources?

i want this as an auxiliary power in my future plug-in full electric car :D
a little 200cc in the trunk when your getting too far from home...
