It is said, and I really belive, that Steve Vai is the best of Satriani`s apprentices and Kirk is one of the worst. Well lets compare Roy Clark with Buckethead or Andre Segovia with Jeff Beck then. Comparisons like this are both meaningless and silly but my verdict is...I like the hell out of them both.
Technically, Hammett is an average player, but admittedly his solos do fit well for metallica. and he's never claimed to be a virtuoso. I think a much better student of Joe Satriani's is Alex Skolnick from Testament, who is a much more musical and expressive player.
But then above these you have the super guitarists e.g. Jason Becker, Shawn Lane, Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan.........there are so many out there to enjoy.
I have to admit I had bias coming into this. I have every album Satch has released but haven't heard a minute of Metallica, much less Hammett. Needless to say Hammett is very talented, but we have to remember, Joe was his mentor. Joe just has so much more diversity in his music and beautiful melodies! Hammett is Luke Skywalker, but Satch is Yoda.
Thanks for the video. I will say Kirk is above most no doubt. However, Satriani is the master but we all have our opinions so lets just leave it at that. I also love Michael Schenker. Each with his own style. If you ever get a chance listen to UFO strangers in the night. Rock Bottom.
@punkprincessv@metallifreak23 The pentatonic scale is very easy to learn, but it's also very limited. That doesn't mean that there's something wrong with it, it just means that most beginners get too comfortable with it and use only that particular scale for every single song for 20+ years (i.e. Kirk Hammett).

Also, I'm not sure why the solo from Dyer's Eve was not used. It was one of Kirk's most technical solos. However, it still doesn't stand up to Satriani.

I personally like listening to Kirk more because I like his thrash style. But Satch is a better guitarist all around. I don't see the need though in criticizing either guitarist, they've both made success and have killer music.

Someone can PREFER Kirk over Satriani but in this battle Satriani is the more skilled player, he is the virtuoso. Kirk is good at what he does and fits Metallica well but is completely out of his league with someone like Satriani. Essentially it's an unfair battle because you have two different skill levels and two completely different genres. This battle ONLY exists because Kirk took lessons from Satch. Joe should compete with other virtuosos like Zaza, Vai, Friedman, Gilbert, Lane, Johnson etc

@uanasgaps Kirk took lessons from Satriani. This is a well established fact (Kirk and Satch both say so). What did he learn from Satch? I have no idea. Kirk had already established his playing style while in Exodus so he probably just learned some theory from Satriani. Hammett also took lessons from another teacher (I can't remember his name) and also studied at a music college.

Technically, Hammett is an average player, but admittedly his solos do fit well for metallica. and he's never claimed to be a virtuoso. I think a much better student of Joe Satriani's is Alex Skolnick from Testament, who is a much more musical and expressive player.
But then above these you have the super guitarists e.g. Jason Becker, Shawn Lane, Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan.........there are so many out there to enjoy.

I have to admit I had bias coming into this. I have every album Satch has released but haven't heard a minute of Metallica, much less Hammett. Needless to say Hammett is very talented, but we have to remember, Joe was his mentor. Joe just has so much more diversity in his music and beautiful melodies! Hammett is Luke Skywalker, but Satch is Yoda.

Thanks for the video. I will say Kirk is above most no doubt. However, Satriani is the master but we all have our opinions so lets just leave it at that. I also love Michael Schenker. Each with his own style. If you ever get a chance listen to UFO strangers in the night. Rock Bottom.

@punkprincessv @metallifreak23 The pentatonic scale is very easy to learn, but it's also very limited. That doesn't mean that there's something wrong with it, it just means that most beginners get too comfortable with it and use only that particular scale for every single song for 20+ years (i.e. Kirk Hammett).

@metallifreak23 Kirk Hammett doesn't know much about theory. He just does cheap pentatonic licks. Sure he's famous, but you could make the same argument about the Jonas Brothers or Justin Beiber. Fame doesn't equal talent. What's even worse is that he had a great teacher and still plays like a 14 year old.

@cperalta92 All the greats did pentatonics. Hendrix, Satch, Van Halen, and really, its more than just being a good guitar player. Kirk's a great songwriter and lead guitarist, as opposed to Satch whos a solo artist.

Does it actually matter who's better? they are very different guitarists, kirk is not a solo artist and he also has other duties like rhythm guitar and joe is a solo artist and has to spend time with his guitar solos. anyway they are both great guitarists. this arguement is like deciding wheather God is better than Satan?!?!?!?

Also, I'm not sure why the solo from Dyer's Eve was not used. It was one of Kirk's most technical solos. However, it still doesn't stand up to Satriani.

The biggest difference to me is that Joe Satch makes the guitar talk, expressing a wide array of emotion, where as Kirk Hammett's playing kinda stays more stagnant. Both are phenomenal guitarists, but Joe does things beyond just hitting the notes when he plays

@JacksonTheBoyd Dude, either way you are wrong. If you actually played then you would know. If you knew anything about lead guitar players, you would know that they all use scales when soloing. If Kirk used the "same pentatonic shreds" as you say then all of his solos would sound similar. If you think they do then you need your ears checked.

if anyone don't know, HETFIELD WROTE THE SOLOS OF METALLICA... just look at old albums books, the credits are hetfield/ulrich in almost every song, in some cases its hetfield/ulrich/burton or hetfield/ulrich/burton/mustaine, hetfield wrote the solos, the riffs, the bass line and the vocals, and also he gives ideas to lars... hammett... the first riff he wrote is enter sandman, and is an ultra easy riff, playing a solo is not so difficult... writing it, thats different...

@OfirVinik wow... mustaine didn't write every ride the lightning solo... fight fire with fire solo was written by james/lars, ride the lightning was written by hammett, for whom the bell tolls was written by hetfield/lars, fade to black was written by James, trapped under ice - hetfield/ulrich, escape - hetfield/ulrich, creeping death - hetfield/ulrich, the call of ktulu - pretty much everyone. And with technic... Mustaine destroys. Mustaine wrote some of call of ktulu and ride the lightning.

@OfirVinik Your right, lars didn't write the solos, he helped set them up with the rest of the song. and Dave doesn't play in any Ride the Lightning songs... so that didn't make any sence at all when you said "that's not who wrote the solos, the just didn't mention Mustaine because he didn't write it". And I never put down Burton and barely hammett because I knew they did there own thing... kirk just agreed with stuff and Cliff wrote the bass.

Someone can PREFER Kirk over Satriani but in this battle Satriani is the more skilled player, he is the virtuoso. Kirk is good at what he does and fits Metallica well but is completely out of his league with someone like Satriani. Essentially it's an unfair battle because you have two different skill levels and two completely different genres. This battle ONLY exists because Kirk took lessons from Satch. Joe should compete with other virtuosos like Zaza, Vai, Friedman, Gilbert, Lane, Johnson etc

@uanasgaps Kirk took lessons from Satriani. This is a well established fact (Kirk and Satch both say so). What did he learn from Satch? I have no idea. Kirk had already established his playing style while in Exodus so he probably just learned some theory from Satriani. Hammett also took lessons from another teacher (I can't remember his name) and also studied at a music college.
