Flew in to Atlanta last month worst Turbulence flying back from Germany granted I was on the last row of the plane and felt everything it was terrible....
when we went to go to Orlando For Vacation it was stormy and we had no choice but to go through the type of clouds at 0:32 the plane was shaking hard and the front of the plane randomly droped and we fell fast and it was bumpy the rest of the flight it looked like the plane was stalling some times it was not cool i wasnt scared i just prayed the sign of the cross lol
Thanks, man. I fly, but I still grip my seat whenever there's heavy turbulence (especially if it's during take-off and landing). This helped put stuff into perspective. Once I was on a flight that was so rocky, my coffee cup flew into the ceiling. :)

Good video and clear-cut explanations! Although everytime I fly...turbulence is something I look forward to with great anticipation...its like a rollercoaster ride where you dont know when the plunge is going to happen! FUN :)
i think the worst thing for a plane is to come across really thick clouds, thats just so freakin scary, i went to las vegas this summer & i was scared to death, usually i'm okay with turbulences but now, i dont know why, i'm always afraid that something would burn in the engine & make the plane fall :/
Now, I thought the faster you go, the smoother you ride... For instance barreling down a cobbled street in a car is smoother than going very slow, and going over a Cattle grid is less of a shock at high speed than low, is this just me or am I right?
One interesting thing I observed is that since I started flying in FlightGear flight simulator, my fear of flying (in real life, that is) just dissapeared.
When i went to canada i had my portable DVD player and i was watching final destination 2 i thought it was the rollercoaster one but it was the plane crash 1 oh my god i shit myself after it finished ,,BTW one flight when i went to egypt we hit a thunderstorm and i really did piss myself the woman next to me looked out of the window and saw the wet patch and moved away lol i am still scared of flying its unnatural

Airplanes are designed to go through turbulence, but sometimes you just get fucked up :D
Like continental airlines just a few hours back. 26 ppl got injured. And worst case scenario, the plane goes down. And of course, that does freak you out.
All the fun of enjoying a turbulence is usually washed away by the fear of dying. Mixed emotions, some people enjoy it, but many don't.
Flying from Japan to Sydney around 17 years ago we hit CAT (Clear air turbulance). The plane dropped around 900ft and the lights went out, people actually screamed!! I have since had a severe fear of flying and I don't think I'll ever overcome it!!
i had the worst turbulence ever. there was a delay to avoid it but i guess we had to take off tho. at one point the plane dropped for a split second.! everyone else was actin like they were on a roller coaster an im like wtf man we almos crashed lol

Sir, I think this is a wonderful thing you're doing...using your knowledge to help others overcome their fears. Thanks for the "refresher" course on the causes of turbulence and what y'all up in the cockpit are doing to smooth things out for us passengers! :)
Was on a Cathay Pacific Boeing 747 this morning inbound to London from Hong Kong. I had the most frightening experience of turbulence! Everytime there was turbulence I heard the engine rev up - supposedly an attempt stabilize the plane?
I was DEATHLY afraid of flying and took many courses to overcome my fear. For 15 years we either drove to our destination or took a cruise. This was seriously the only course that helped me, and, it was free!!! Since than, I've been on 20 flights, some with a lot of turbulence, and I've been fine. One flight had mechanical failure and yet I remained calm!!! My fear of flying had to do with crashing and dying and mistrust of the plane itself. This course will help you...I promise!!
xjaystanx...You really need to listen to the course. It will explain things like that. Believe me, I used to be paralyzed if I knew I had to fly. I would rather cancel out on the opportunity of a lifetime if it meant I had to get onto a plane!!! The U.S .has some of the best mechanics and our quality control is great. I know if anyone had said this to me BEFORE the course, I would have told them they were wrong.
I was afraid to fly, said I never would. Then I graduated high school and my only way to spend the summer at my sisters at the beach was to fly... or a 40 hr greyhound trip. I flew.... now I love it. It is very relaxing at 30,000 feet... however take offs and landings still get me sometimes.
MyLife3636, what was wrong with the plane that had mechanical problems?
A back up generator wasn't working, which would only be used in case of engine failure. The pilot said he could technically could finish the flight but he's rather not risk it. He even warned us there would be emergency vehicles and personnel on the ground when we landed...just for practice. There weren't any at all which just proved to us that it wasn't a true emergency.
Shit scary man! We were heading from Dulles to MSP and on landing we were in a huge snowstorm. I have never hit the runway so damn hard in my life. We bounced twice and all the amateurs were screaming. I was actually scared beacuse I thought for sure the gear was going to collapse. Somehow we made it to the gate.....
my flight from Los Angeles to Manlia was very bumpy even though most of the flight was over the ocean can u tell me why my crusing altitude was 34,000
Actually, I'm not scared Turbulence at all. It's relatively fun to see the plane shudder and bump. I know it's not but, it is. I was on a 777-200 from Sri Lanka to Singapore, and at 12.15 AM also. The whole ride was a massive turbulent one. :D
On my flight from Stockholm to London this past January we hit some rough turbulence over Denmark. The pilot tried to climb and then descend but it didnt help. After about 10 minutes the turbulence stopped.
hmmm last ime i had turbulance i was shitting bricks because i was sceard of flying at that time.. the plane would desend and climb and desend and climb... -.- nowi aint sceard :p iv learnt to not give a fuck ,i want to be a pilot
lol, well i was just saying, when you have red areas they have to fly around it, which i would thing would be scary, if i wern't an enthuiest i wouls say, wow those plane's arnt safe
And does anybody of you believe in fate?I mean,if I take a plane tomorrow knowing that that's my last moment,Am I really going to crash?Does it sound funny?:-)
I live near Lake Como, northern Italy.I've been to the US twice but the more I fly the more I hate it.I almost get panic attacks.I just love USA so much,I want to go there again so badly but there's the Atlantic between us...shit :-)
I love flying, but whenever there's turbulence man I really get uncomfortable. Last week on a flight from San Juan to Newark on a 757 it was just going up and down side to side. I hate that sh!t!
For those unfortunate ones who are uncomfortable with flying and/or turbulence, perhaps it would be best to bear in mind that your potential death in an aviation accident would be swift, as it would entail your body being shredded to thousands of bits no greater than an inch or so.
that actually happened today! som chinese aircompany flew from Tapei to Bali or something and the plane dropped like 10 000 feet due to very heavy turbulence. No one died or anything but some broke their legs and arms. That's scary...
its very unlikely that turbulence would bring down an aircraft (Never Happened B4), unless your unfortunate to drop through an airpocket, which could lead to a dive. Unless the overhead lockers were flung open, and passengers & crew were getting tossed up to the ceiling, there's no need to worry.
Good vid! I was travelling back to London from NY today and we had it really bad as we passed Canada and I honestly thought we were going to crash as it was so violent. Can planes go down due to this?
I remember flying from Sacramento, Ca-Atlanta, Ga and we descended into a thunderstorm. It got so very dark in the plane and the turbulence was unbelievable. At one point the plane dipped and people started screaming. I was a little tipsy during it all and just sat there holding my breath. The pilot and attendants had warned us prior to us going through choppy air, but actually being in it was heart stopping. I hope thats the worst I ever experience.
This video clip is very well made and simple enough for many people to understand. I'm a FAA-certified airplane mechanic but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I almost shit my pants every time I fly, when i hear the slightest change of sound in the engine a always assume it's failing and I'm going to die. Just being so high in the air makes me want to cry when I'm flying and watching all these airplane crash videos doesn't help much Lol! ;)
lmao its exactly what ido !!!! i fucking hate it when you set off and your 1000ft high then you get butterflys in your stoach then you hear like alot of noises! i use earplugs to be honest and when it does get to turbulence bring your feet up on to he rest and some how that makes it feel less shaky!
Yeah, thats understandable...but remember...when you're flying in a an aeroplane, you are secure up there, as long as the aircraft is going fast enough, you'll always be fine....even if the plane was to lose lift, all the pilot has to do is dip the nose to pick up speed and re-achieve lift...you are really quite safe.
i was in a plane to L.A tht got hit by lightening...tht was VERY turbulent! hence i shit myself everytime i get on a plane, plus i watch too much air crash investigation lol!
I've never worried about turbulence, I enjoy flying. & I've been in turbulence when the pilot has come on a 3rd time to tell the cabin crew to get strapped into their seats...NOW! But on Sunday I was flying from Malaga to Glasgow and 30mins in we hit turbulence for about 10mins. I panicked the rest of the flight, even though I've been in worse! I felt like a total idiot!
Now, after reading 1990Pizza, I feel like an even BIGGER idiot! Hope all yours, and my, future flights are turbulence free!
there surprisingly many people who are afraid of flying I´ve heard, but no turbulence isn´t dangerous. The planes are built to take it. I read somewhere that there haven´t been in one passangerplane accident caused by turbulence in the 1990´s and imagine how many planes that have been in the air during those years:) Only danger could be if you weren´t fastened.
I am no expert but I have seen videos where they describe jumbo jets as being able to handle 13X the maximum turbulance ever encountered.
It also showed a stress test of the 747 which was very reassuring - the wings on a 747 can nearly touch each other's tips above the plane before breaking - thats how flexible they are.
So, when you see them flapping and the fuselage flexing around like a rollercoaster inside - just keep in mind it can handle much worse conditions than anyone has ever seen.
Normally it is no problem with a minor turbulence, its just something that happends sometimes and that you have to get used with.
On my last flight however, we experienced severe turbulence, and since it came out of clare air it was not expected. The pilot lost control of the plane and was forced to "attempt an emergency descend" telling the crew and passengers to enter crashlanding positions in their seats. That night I kissed the ground. But I guess those cases are really really rare :/
Whoa that must of been pretty scary....yes they are rare. I experienced some severe turbulence myself last year, many passengers were looking around at each other to judge whether they were as panicked. It is unsettling to anyone when it becoems noticeably severe, but remember...the aircraft are designed to take incredible stress...check out the 787 wing load/stress test and you'll see what I mean.
"But in reality, it's really not [moving around alot]"
As my last post demonstrates, this is not absolute. Not all turbulence is the same, with varying severities or lack therefore. Once weathering the worst of it enough though, it all becomes fun.
On my last flight (LGB-JFK), I was in the 3rd from last row of the Airbus 320, and we flew through a noreaster. Over Pennsylvania, we hit a pocket turbulence where the plane DID move around a bit (smacked my face into the window pretty hard). It was really rough for about 10 - 15 minutes, then moderately rough even when we broke out of the clouds at 900-something feet. Nervous wreck then, but now I feel like it would be nothing if I did go through that again. I guess experiencing helps too.
thank you

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we love the "feeling of turbulence" when travelling in the air? What makes so fun?
For me, I enjoy some turbulence during air travel, but I do not know why.
(3) Why do we feel more excited when we eat and drink in turbulence?
(4) What is you favourite food and drinks in a turbulence flight?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

MyLife3636 2 years ago
what happened when there was a mechanical failure did the plane just glide iin the air??or wasit falling?
xjaystanx 2 years ago
xjaystanx...You really need to listen to the course.

MyLife3636, what was wrong with the plane that had mechanical problems?
bigkyle07 2 years ago
A back up generator wasn't working, which would only be used in case of engine failure. The pilot said he could technically could finish the flight but he's rather not risk it. He even warned us there would be emergency vehicles and personnel on the ground when we landed...just for practice. There weren't any at all which just proved to us that it wasn't a true emergency.

I love travelling but i hate flying.
Its so.. uhh feels so unnatural for some massive bulk of metal flying in air. I just always feel like its too heavy and will drop out of the air :S
ee flying is creepy
but i kinda of like it. haha makes sense to me

I get your point. I love studying airplanes and the way they work, I just don't like being in them while they are ~6 miles in the sky.

Shit scary man! We were heading from Dulles to MSP and on landing we were in a huge snowstorm. I have never hit the runway so damn hard in my life. We bounced twice and all the amateurs were screaming. I was actually scared beacuse I thought for sure the gear was going to collapse. Somehow we made it to the gate.....

my flight from Los Angeles to Manlia was very bumpy even though most of the flight was over the ocean can u tell me why my crusing altitude was 34,000
filipinoboy147 2 years ago
because the ocean can be very unpredictable, you could have been flying over a storm or something of the like.
atherrien95 2 years ago
Actually, I'm not scared Turbulence at all. It's relatively fun to see the plane shudder and bump. I know it's not but, it is. I was on a 777-200 from Sri Lanka to Singapore, and at 12.15 AM also. The whole ride was a massive turbulent one. :D
Fireretro 2 years ago
On my flight from Stockholm to London this past January we hit some rough turbulence over Denmark. The pilot tried to climb and then descend but it didnt help. After about 10 minutes the turbulence stopped.

hmmm last ime i had turbulance i was shitting bricks because i was sceard of flying at that time.. the plane would desend and climb and desend and climb... -.- nowi aint sceard :p iv learnt to not give a fuck ,i want to be a pilot

Not very informative. This clip doesn't present reasons to be less nervous. Reassuring would have been a discussion of aircraft design.
kaviraj 3 years ago
Agreed - thay should say that turbulences aren't dangerous to plane - it only makes people afraid :)
Alupl 3 years ago
Nice video. But isn't it true that the slower the airspeed and aircraft speed, the greater the risk for stalling?
sexysadie1977 3 years ago
Aww yes but an aircraft wont stall at 250 Nknots. ;-D
peracutus 3 years ago 3
yer, most aircraft climb and decent at that speed. a 747 can fly at about 160

Hope this helps and best regards,
IntenseLowerChafing 3 years ago 5
that actually happened today! som chinese aircompany flew from Tapei to Bali or something and the plane dropped like 10 000 feet due to very heavy turbulence. No one died or anything but some broke their legs and arms. That's scary...
jokli007 3 years ago
its very unlikely that turbulence would bring down an aircraft (Never Happened B4), unless your unfortunate to drop through an airpocket, which could lead to a dive.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that when I'm flying next month (I'm so scared...).

I almost shit my pants every time I fly, when i hear the slightest change of sound in the engine a always assume it's failing and I'm going to die. Just being so high in the air makes me want to cry when I'm flying and watching all these airplane crash videos doesn't help much Lol! ;)
Rika4chan 3 years ago 2
lmao its exactly what ido !!!! i fucking hate it when you set off and your 1000ft high then you get butterflys in your stoach then you hear like alot of noises! i use earplugs to be honest and when it does get to turbulence bring your feet up on to he rest and some how that makes it feel less shaky!
mummsy 3 years ago
Yeah, thats understandable...but remember...when you're flying in a an aeroplane, you are secure up there, as long as the aircraft is going fast enough, you'll always be fine....even if the plane was to lose lift, all the pilot has to do is dip the nose to pick up speed and re-achieve lift...you are really quite safe.

marika19041989 3 years ago 2
I've never worried about turbulence, I enjoy flying. & I've been in turbulence when the pilot has come on a 3rd time to tell the cabin crew to get strapped into their seats...NOW! But on Sunday I was flying from Malaga to Glasgow and 30mins in we hit turbulence for about 10mins. I panicked the rest of the flight, even though I've been in worse! I felt like a total idiot!
Now, after reading 1990Pizza, I feel like an even BIGGER idiot! Hope all yours, and my, future flights are turbulence free!

we own a small beechcraft baron 58 (small plane) and ther is so much turbulance it isnt funny, for those of you who would be scared of a jet, ha.

i am always afraid . but i never had much turbulence.
can it be really scary?? and is it dangerous when it happens???
bolman12 3 years ago
there surprisingly many people who are afraid of flying I´ve heard, but no turbulence isn´t dangerous. The planes are built to take it. I read somewhere that there haven´t been in one passangerplane accident caused by turbulence in the 1990´s and imagine how many planes that have been in the air during those years:) Only danger could be if you weren´t fastened.
NIICKE 3 years ago
I am no expert but I have seen videos where they describe jumbo jets as being able to handle 13X the maximum turbulance ever encountered.
It also showed a stress test of the 747 which was very reassuring - the wings on a 747 can nearly touch each other's tips above the plane before breaking - thats how flexible they are.
So, when you see them flapping and the fuselage flexing around like a rollercoaster inside - just keep in mind it can handle much worse conditions than anyone has ever seen.
stationstops 3 years ago
Normally it is no problem with a minor turbulence, its just something that happends sometimes and that you have to get used with.
On my last flight however, we experienced severe turbulence, and since it came out of clare air it was not expected. The pilot lost control of the plane and was forced to "attempt an emergency descend" telling the crew and passengers to enter crashlanding positions in their seats. That night I kissed the ground. But I guess those cases are really really rare :/
1990Pizza 3 years ago
Whoa that must of been pretty scary....yes they are rare. I experienced some severe turbulence myself last year, many passengers were looking around at each other to judge whether they were as panicked. It is unsettling to anyone when it becoems noticeably severe, but remember...the aircraft are designed to take incredible stress...check out the 787 wing load/stress test and you'll see what I mean.
itzajdmting 3 years ago
"But in reality, it's really not [moving around alot]"
As my last post demonstrates, this is not absolute. Not all turbulence is the same, with varying severities or lack therefore. Once weathering the worst of it enough though, it all becomes fun.
travelsonic 3 years ago
yep absoloutley true!
