@bslgeorge Technology will soon in a different perspective in the coming years. We look at computers now in away like we look at a car where whose goes faster. Future generations will see it in a different way because the computing is going to leave the box and soon everybody's interface to the digital will all be the same experience because massive networks are now allowing computers to share information so fast that an entire computer worth data can be transported in the blink of an eye.
@wootness3000 I see where he is coming from as big corporate businesses like PC world tell people they need a core I7 to do gaming yet my old core 2 quad is core than capable.
i'm kinda surprise that some poeple still prefer higher clock rate are better...it's all about fp(floating point, flops) performance and ipc(instruction per cycle) and cache latency/speed, brench prediction and register datapath size/APU performance/ efficiency of integer unit and stage pipeline. uops decoder miss rate...etc p4 3.8ghz was smash by core 1 solo 1.2ghz(not even close to 50% of c2d in single thread performance per clock) not to mention the later cpu...clock rate don't mean anything
@bslgeorge ghz doesnt mean everything...shure it means "speed" in technical terms but....like wootness said...a 980X at even 1 ghz compared to a pentium 4 HT EE at 5 ghz....the 980x would still win.....pentiums only got 1 core...2 with HT...980x has 6 cores...12 with HT
@bslgeorge higher clock speed=higher temperatures=usually higher consumption of energy... regardless of the processor, few programs will ever need more than 3.5Ghz in a single core to run... multi-cores and large cache memory is the new thing.
New architectures have better IPC (Instructions Per Clock/Cycle). Higher clock frequencies are problematic since the problem is energy consumption and heat dissipation. It's very difficult to go beyond 4 GHz with current technologies and have reasonable power budget (and cooling). It makes more sense to do more in parallel; it is cheap and efficient. Most of the heavy workload is parallel anyway, so it's all mostly good.
I remember Pentium 4 HT was hot back when I was a kid. The sad part is that many public schools still have medieval technology like that today. I memorized what the HT stands for: Hyper Threading.
@bslgeorge 3.8GHz single core compared to 3.33GHz (that can be overclocked to well over 4GHz) 4-core and hyper-threaded with a QPI link instead of a front-side bus, DDR3 chipsets, multiple memory lanes, SATA3, USB3, PCIe x16 3.0, and more. Compare a 3.8GHz Pentium 4 HT EE to a 980X EE it would get smashed in everyway.
@wootness3000 Also, the pipeline: A single-core PV-M (Pentium M) at 2 GHz would beat a 3 GHz HT. And a 673 MHz PV-M would beat a 1695 MHz P-IV Celeron.
well some average joe have no idea about computing architecture.... netburst is shit architecture and poor fp performance(lack of x87/mmx and poor support of sse)/only one decoder/ no prefetching unit/predecoder and bad brenchs/ only able to issue 2 instruction wide/ tiny dartapath(16bit x4 compare to "pentium III "p6's 64bit and c2d's 128bit x4). small cache(8kb l1 vs 64kb l1 of c2d) and many of bad feature.....however it's amazing that such terrible thing can capable competed with amd....
@bobctx Yes it is fast for stock clock speed, but modern processors (multicore/hyperthreading) are based on parallel computing; more hands make light work. And can you imagine how much heat a Netburst CPU running at 3.8 GHz would put out?!

@maidy86 You buy them in kits, up to 24GB (sometimes more). You have to have a chipset capable of supporting the RAM, and you must buy the correct specification of RAM.
yup, intel and amd use malaysia, mexico, singapore, taiwan, and germany to either manufacture or diffuse their processors. as far as i'm aware, countries like japan and china aren't used at all. i think its nice to know that these companies don't just use the industry standard locations to make something
The main memory cannot keep up with the speed of the processor, so a much faster cache memory is located on the processor's chip for fast access. Contents from the main memory are pre-fetched and placed into the cache to be ready for the processor.

It's alright for basic computing. 960MB isn't a lot of RAM, and you have an integrated graphics card which means that you can't really game anyway. My computer has 6144MB of RAM.
The Original 1st gen Pentiums actually started at 60 and 66MHz, but then their architecture got redesigned for 75-200MHz due to heat and power consumption.
64 people bought AMD :D

is an AMD athlon 64 processor good? its got a 2.20 GHz processor and 960 Mb RAM and thats alot of RAM
PokeChampion07 2 years ago
It's alright for basic computing. 960MB isn't a lot of RAM, and you have an integrated graphics card which means that you can't really game anyway. My computer has 6144MB of RAM.

The Original 1st gen Pentiums actually started at 60 and 66MHz, but then their architecture got redesigned for 75-200MHz due to heat and power consumption.

That's not a processor, that's a package. The Centrino Duo is a Intel Core Duo, or Core 2 Duo, with a power saving Intel chipset. Bitch.
