I think this oversimplifies things. OK, by number, relatively few links use nofollow, but Google never relied on link counts alone; links can carry more weight depending on their context. We can hope that Wikipedia links are on popular pages, are added responsibly, point to good resources, and are well checked. Therefore they carry more weight - hence the appeal to spammers - and there was a greater loss to pagerank when Jimbo forced the use of nofollow across en, against a democratic vote.
I really don't trust wikipedia anyhow and rarely use it unless I want to find out a celebs bday. I heard there was going to be more verifying so I may use it in the future. The idea that anyone could add "facts" to me was crazy too many people don't know what they are talking about or malciously do things just for "fun"
Great explanation. I think that Google must follow the no-follow links anyway, because some content is worth following. Besides that, everyone starts using no-follow and that's not good for relevant search results.
And one more. Is information that is placed on my google docs (spreadsheat, presentation, document) and that google document is embeded on my page contributing to my page rank ?
Hi Mat, didn't know to who else to complain to se here it goes: there is no option to insert hyperlink into google docs spreadsheet that i want to embed in my page. There is probably a good reason for this, but i am still hoping that google just forgot to do this :)
Hi Matt, I'm listing items from eBay in my site through their RSS Feeds and I was wondering if this links should have the "no follow" attribute? I'll appreciate if you can answer me that question. Thank you!!
Personally I hope they keep the nofollow attribute on all of my blogs and sites I use them constantly only giving away link juice to those deserving rather than anyone. If wiki went do follow it would be hit with hundreds of thousands of spammers all placing crap just to get a backlink.
Let's say for instance, one large company (with a large 50K+ website and good SEO) acquires another company within the same industry (which also has a large 50K+ website and good SEO). Since the acquisition, both sites now provide links back and fourth between one another. Would using nofollow in this circumstance make sense?
Cant say that I have looked but I imagine that a lot of says republish Wikipedia. I could see some of them removing nofollow since the links in Wikipedia very often is very good and hence maybe see that they would increase possibility to traffic with especially Google (I remember now something I saw comining Wikipedia pages with data from similar web references).
Maybe such pages would add up to some power with Google even you dont rank each on any position visible.

Very bright. Good way to stop spammers.

The problem is that no one do that.
Nofollow is here, everywhere.
Forums, blogs comments...
If a great user with something like 10 000 messages, post a link in a forum, this is in nofollow. What's the fuck with that ?

'nofollow' taken into consideration when its an intenal link
when its a nofollow on external link (backlink), google does move pr juice to it
it was tested

@korvix yes that's true, Google just doesn't like to admit it! I've proven that they count, on my own site.

Greetings, I read that Google had decided to drop the nofollow rule on links and it is just not taken into account. Is it true? Thanks

Would be really good to get subtitles or at least the option for subtitles on your videos Matt. Your sign language isn't exactly up to scratch...

Well this isn't exactly what I would have liked to hear Matt but thanks for the clarity on the significance (or lack of) links from Wikipedia.
That will save us valuable resources.
