is it okay to keep mejiro found outside as pets? i found one while walking and it seems to be unable to fly but it doesn't look like a baby either. i am thinking either it was someone's pet or it is hurt, but i have little idea how to take care of a bird. other than what you have said of its diet, is there anything else to keep in mind?
@wukutaiwan Well, the one in the video was in my house only for about ten minutes, so I did not feed him/her (later the mother came, and I put the fledgling in the nest)
But my previous majiros all ate citrus, caterpillars, tropical fruit, berries, yogurt (this is for vitamin D, as house birds they do not get as much sun as they should, so they need a different source of vitamin D) hard cheeses, jellies, lychee nuts, moths, spiders etc. This species is very sensetive, and requires
@wukutaiwan a good source of protein. They can actually die if not given insect protein and sunlight ( a food source of vitamin D is not always as good as sun, but both should be given). So make sure if you keep one, give him/her insects daily, and place the bird in a cage outside, half covered by a towel, so the bird has shade, and half without a cover, so it can get sun. Do this daily for as long as the bird wants, about 20 minutes is what mine liked. Hope I helped!

I do not know, this one was a baby that fell from a tree. They are quite common here in Hawaii. Check for a pet store that carries them.
